Woke up to find £700 taken from my paypal on my birthday

not reused anywhere, its completely different to any other passwords i have. I plan on closing my paypal account after this anyway since i never really use it anyways.

I will reinstall windows too since i am going to get a SSD with my recovered money lol

Long story short - Paypal a few years ago managed to take £400-ish out of my account as well as the legit buyer of a mobile phone's Paypal account to pay for an Ebay item.

Clear Paypal screwed up, a few days before Xmas too, and didn't sort it for days.
Even the seller contacted me asking when I'd paid for the phone when it's already been paid for and when he tried to reverse it found his account to be frozen.

The seller had to send the phone and prove the address that it was sent to despite it clearly being PP's mistake before unlocking his account and refunding me (which took several more days).

I try to avoid PP at all costs now.

i think it was some virus on my pc, i did a check with Kaspersky and got no threats.

So i then download Microsoft Security Essentials and got 4 threats,

Okay thanks for the info, interesting kaspersky failed to find what MSE did.

So i then download Microsoft Security Essentials and got 4 threats, 2 of which were medium threat and the other 2 being High threats. The high threat ones were called 'Exploit:HTML/IframeRef.Z' and 'Exploit:Java/CVE-2012-0507.CA'.

Always keep Java patched. Uninstall Java if you don't need it. Disable the Java browser plug-in until you need to use it.

hey guys, just an update.

My bank account has now been credited with the refund.

Guess paypal was good in terms of service on this particular situation. My paypal account is now limited, but since i don't use it anymore anyway, i am just going to leave it like that.

All in all it took 3 days from contacting paypal to get my money back.

Thanks all!

Wow nice turn-around Storm. Thanks for keeping us updated. It wasn't the best timing though with it being your birthday. I had £250 (€300) taken out of a European cash point on Christmas Eve back in 2007. It meant that I was skint over Christmas but I was the only one who had money in January once I was refunded lol. What was strange though was I haven't been abroad for 4 years at the time I was frauded. In my case, I don't think it was computer passwords. I think I must had put it in a dodgy cash point in one of those remote petrol stations, the card got cloned in the machine then details along with other people's got sold abroad.

This happened to me a few years ago. No idea at all how they got into my PayPal as my password was/is unique and un-guessable. They sorted it all out for me no problems and nothing ended up coming out of my bank :)
