The visa application process is a pain, I've had a couple of mates do it and they're on their way to getting permanent residency now.

If you're serious about it then I'd suggest getting in contact with a reputable lawyer to guide you through the process, there's lots of hoops to jump through and if they're any good they should make it much faster and easier for you to do so. If you've got someone willing to sponsor you then that should definitely help with the application process.

+1. I used Canadavisa.com (could you guess :p) and IMO they were worth their weight in gold. There are a number of applications, criminal and medical checks, financial obligations, family questionnaires etc. It is not easy.

It is an expensive long process. My visa was a fast one at 9 months from application. It took around 2 months to compile a complete application. A mate in Canada from the UK had a 4 year process.

The 1 year IEC Visa can be applied for directly and you do not have to go through BUNAC. This can also be extended for another year so effectively you should be able to get 2 years. They are relatively simple to apply for and you may want to do this while you figure out how to sort out a more permanent solution.

Hi all,

I am seriously looking into this visa now, it seems the easiest to get and with that extra year on top thats fantastic and with a 8 week or so processing time!!

However, to get the 2nd year I would have to leave Canada then re-enter it again? so i would guess you would book the cheapest flight out of Canada then just re-enter??

Its so annoying that to get any information about this subject is so hard and i have you guys to thank for it!!

anyone else have any used this IEC working VISA from the UK? I see that Pinkribbonscars has applied and been accepted! thats great!

It might have been for a different visa but there is/was one where you had to be out of Canada for a set period I believe, to get round this you could always designate the time as when you go back to see friends/family or even just take an extended holiday.

If it was just a case of leaving and entering Canada then why bother with a flight anywhere? The vast majority of Canadian cities are within a few hundred miles of the American border - use/hire a car and cross the border then cross back again, it should work out cheaper and as easy.

For the International Experience Canada (IEC)United Kingdom Visa (1Year) to extend it to a further it says in the FAQ.

Extending Your Stay in Canada
I'm currently in Canada as an IEC working holiday participant. Can I extend my current work permit, or do I have to apply again?

You cannot extend your work permit for a second year. In order to take part in the IEC initiative you will need to apply again, ensuring that you meet the new criteria. If you are accepted, you will have to leave Canada and re-enter with your new Letter of Introduction in order to be issued your new work permit.

So yeah I could just drive out and back in again to get that other year!

semi-pro is right. All you need to do is leave and re-enter, so you can just go to the states for a bit, walk around the flag pole and then come back.

So a strange rule lol. But hey as long as you don't have to leave for say 6 months to come back in.

Just a quick bump to see if anyone else is progressing with their application

The BUNAC flight I took in 2008 had a total of 6 people on it; me, my two mates and three randomers that didn't bother socialising.

When I do it again I'm booking private flights.

When I went in 2004 there were about 30-40 of us on the flight to Vancouver.

Admittedly the socializing was fairly light to begin with, because you meet at the airport at like 4am in the morning or something. Then spend most of the flight sleeping.

It was after getting to Vancouver though and everybody being in the same hostel the first night that you then got to know people. Finally, when I got up to Whistler I would run into people I recognized from the flight and the hostel. I may never have really talked to them, but it was an instant connection in a new place where you don't know anybody. I ended up moving into a house with seven other people from my BUNAC flight that I didn't know beforehand.

If you are heading to a ski resort, before or at the start of the season, there will be loads of others on the BUNAC flights.

Congrats dude! Where you flying to, got any worked lined up as of yet? Any idea where your going to head for when your over there... or just go with the flow :D

Heading to Toronto first, no work lined up as of yet  Hope to travel around a bit once I'm settled

Sounds good, exactly what I done really. Worked for 3/4 of my time when I was there and travelled the rest. Bear in mind trying to get around Canada is general is a bit of a pain.. Unless you are willing to fork out for internal flights be prepared to spend lots of time on the buses. (if your going to bus it a lot, get a Hostelling International card as it saves you a third on bus travel using the Greyhound company)

So I'm looking at booking flights at the beginning of November to Vancouver - Air Transat appears to be the cheapest at about £450 return, is there anything else other than that, or some other way of saving money? Thanks!
