So what are peoples reasons for choosing Vancouver over other cities?

Vancouver is a great city, personally I enjoyed Toronto more.

Calgary doesn't have as much to offer, and Montreal.. well it helps if you speak some French, Montreal is a lovely city.

If you're going for a year you have more than enough time to go to a few different places, I would just up and move when I started to get bored.

I went to Vancouver after speaking to a few Canadians who I knew and they all thought I'd enjoy it more, whether that was based on my personality or because they preferred it as a city I'm not sure. One of my mates also suggested they'd be in Vancouver that summer - as it turned out he was right on the other coast but that's almost beside the point.

If I'd had a bit more time and a little more money so I could have travelled a bit more then I'd probably have tried Toronto for a while. As it is though I'm not at all sorry that I spent most of my time there in Vancouver.

I booked my own flight and went to the SWAP office/meet thing in Toronto the day after everyone else.

You will meet people no matter how you go about things.

Ah right. So as I booked through BUNAC, even if I take my own flight I should be able to walk into the SWAP office?

Just a little weekend bump for anyone that has forgotten about this thread :)

Yes, the SWAP meetings/help are independent of booking the flights. I don't know if you still need to inform them of the date you'll be arriving (I think I did) but you will get help from them to apply for a social security number (necessary for work) and they arrange meet-ups for BUNACers as well as having a place for jobs listings etc.

Canada visa/permanent residency process is a pain in the butt!! I know, I lived in Vancouver for 6 months, much easier to find and impregnate a canadian girl, their pretty easy too!

Good to know. That's my citizenship sorted out then ;)

Good to hear that Pinkribbonscars what are your plans next?

I have booked my flights and will be heading out on 23rd June 2011 to Toronto. Will anyone else be around this time?

Don't go to Canada, it is completely crap here. :p.

Good luck to those of your going over. :). I hope you enjoy it.

I could be working in Toronto late June for a few weeks.

Well I've paid the fee - why they make each stage of this application as awkward as possible I have no idea! That's been accepted so I think I'm just waiting for the letter of introduction. I'm not planning on heading out until early November time for the beginning of the ski season, and I need to save a lot of money first.

Did you decide to go on a Bunac flight? I don't think I will unless it isn't any more expensive.

Correct.

Update: just received my conditional acceptance, which seems pretty speedy! Can't complain I guess.

Is this permanent or tempoary?

If the former could you tell me how long it took to get a conditional acceptance letter from the moment you sent off an application.

Temporary - IEC. Here's how it went:

02/04/11 - Sent off application
06/04/11 - Acknowledgment of receipt
12/04/11 - Conditional acceptance

I have read some stories of people waiting weeks on end with no comms, seems fairly random how long it takes.

Can be random, depends if you apply direct or through such names as BUNAC.

I was hoping you applied for permanent as I'm not to interested in tempoary having done all that in the past :)

I'm hoping to perhaps move out to Canada in a couple of years time. My Grandfather was Canadian and I was able to get Canadian citizenship because of that. Means getting to and working in Canada is a doddle.

I've been to Canada a few times, Nova Scotia, and Calgary in Alberta. I'd be thinking of going to Calgary potentially, but one can never tell!! :D

It may not be a doddle mate. Canada are changing immigration laws and cutting the amount of family and working class visa's considerably.

Hopefully by the time you get round to it things will have eased off. :)

Hi Guys,

Sorry to dig this back up but i need some serious help and im hoping anyone here can shed some light!

My Girlfriend lives in Canada, I met her 2 years ago and shes came over to England a few times and I travel to Toronto to see her atleast 5 times a year, So i know the country well and i have friends over there which i have met!

I also have my uncle and aunty which live there but I'm looking into moving over there but the whole applying for Visas is a compelte joke, its NOT clear on the website at all!

I'm guessing the main site people use is http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp, from here you can find all kinds of information but none of it just seems clear to me.

All i want to do is move over for aslong as possible, i DO want to work out there but i just dont know what Visas i can apply for.

I know theres the 1 year Standard Working Visa and a Visa which my uncle could Sponcer me but it just doesnt say anything about how long i can stay there!!!

Heres what i want to know...

I just want to move over and work, i dont want to be involved in any BUNAC at all as its not some kind of holiday im working for and No im not ready for marry her yet!!

Do any of you know anything about this annoying process?

The visa application process is a pain, I've had a couple of mates do it and they're on their way to getting permanent residency now.

If you're serious about it then I'd suggest getting in contact with a reputable lawyer to guide you through the process, there's lots of hoops to jump through and if they're any good they should make it much faster and easier for you to do so. If you've got someone willing to sponsor you then that should definitely help with the application process.

Hi Jimz,

I've been through the process and am a permanent resident of Canada sponsored by my fiancée under a family class visa.

Take a look through http://www.canadavisa.com/
Some of the different visas are here: http://www.canadavisa.com/canadian-immigration-visas.html

I would recommend a family class sponsorship if you can as this will allow you to work here and "should" have the shortest lead time (lead times are on the cic.gc.ca website). You will have to jump through a number of hoops and prove your relationship with your Girlfriend is genuine. I'm not sure if your auntie can sponsor you, you will have to check this.

The immigration assessment form would also be a good start: https://www.canadavisa.com/assess/canada-immigration-assessment-form.htm

Feel free to pop me an email (in trust) if you would like any further information.

Good luck.
