You need to understand the difference between most watched sport, and most played.

That is what everyone on telly has said so far, that football is the most played game in the USA.

I must be watching something entirely different to you, I've not heard it mentioned once, jokingly or seriously.

It's not garbage though, that is all I have heard everytime USA have been mentioned in the world cup.

Everyone stands in amazement at that fact!

That's because it's, well, garbage.

I've spent several summers in Chicago, and by far, it is not the most played sport over there. Even in the early to mid noughties it wasn't a game that was well spread out in terms of schools etc. They prefer many other sports to it. The big four sports, and to an extent the other 2 I mentioned are pretty much drilled into them at a young age. Football isn't.

I don't think the BBC pundits were watching the same game as me.

Yeah England played better but they scored 1 goal and nearly went behind a few times. They had to time waste for 6 minutes to secure the result. And due to their inability to score they didn't win the group. The midfield is still terribly lopsided.

I'm really pleased USA get through they deserved it the most in this group, played their hearts out in all games so far.

Has no-one else been watching the world cup?

They have clearly stated that soccer is the most played game in the USA. I am not saying it is the most watched, but the pundits have all stood in amazement at how soccer is the most played game in the US. It is played more than basketball.

God this is really ******* ******* me off now.

I wish I could play back the highlights before the England vs USA game where the pundits whwre talking about it being the most played sport in the USA.

I am not denying the fact that it's behind all those other sports in viewing figures, but in played sports in the USA it is top.

**** this I am going to e-mail the BBC and get them to answer it on the next game.

Pundits arent necessarily right though... (lets face it, more often than not they're wrong :D )

"The most popular competitive sport (and fifth most popular recreational sport) is bowling (43 million). Other most popular sports are fishing (35 million), bicycling (37 million), weightlifting (33 million), aerobics (30 million), and hiking (28 million).

Among competitive sports, as stated above, bowling is most popular, followed by billiards (29 million), basketball (24 million), golf (23 million), baseball(14 million), soccer (14 million), tennis (12 million), dart throwing (12 million), volleyball (12 million) and softball (10 million)."

Bowling see...clearly the most played :)

lol at the Americans don't like / play football comments.

I know quite a few American lads who have played football since being kids, and a few of them have only ever played football. It probably isn't the most played sport over the there because basketball, american football, baseball and ice hockey are massive, more money, more advertising but a hell of a lot of people do play it at junior level and at senior level.

Just because it isn't as popular doesn't mean they don't care about it. Basketball isn't as popular here, but I probably like it more than I do football and I've played and watched football all my life. Just 'cos it isn't as big doesn't mean the people that play and support it don't give a **** and are not interested. And those that don't watch it regularly or at all you can not begrudge them for supporting their nation.

Are you going to moan that I love to play basketball because it's not our sport and isn't as popular, if England got to the FIBA Championship final or World Championship final are you telling me that you would not support them. No you wouldn't, you would all probably be wanting to watch it. You can't say the USA have a poor team because lots of them have play / played in the Premier league so they are obviously of a World Cup standard as they have shown by coming first in supposedly the easiest group in the WC.

So all those American haters shut the **** up whining because you're playing crap and scrapped through qualification.

England have always struggled against the lesser teams in World Cup's and always upped their game for when they play the likes of Germany, Argentina, Portugal etc.

Confidence is now back in the team and we can easily beat Germany/Ghana/Serbia.

BTW, well done to the yanks for finishing top.

Oh on another note, a lot of the "big" teams have struggled in this World Cup group stage so I'm very happy England have gone through, unbeaten.
