Worth upgrading to Windows 7 from Vista?

There is a way to fix the Vista not updating issue, a quick google will bring up several ways to fix it from registry fixes, batch files to deleting some updates and reinstalling them.

I upgraded my laptop from vista to windows 7 and am much happier with it. It not only runs smoother for my hardware, I noticed a huge performance issue in gaming, running software such as photoshop as well as boosting it's own performance where doing the same thing on Vista just slowed down and may have resulted in a reboot.

I found networking much easier on Windows 7 as my Vista install kept dropping various networks also (yes I researched the issue and corrected it several times but it never kept the changes I made even when I asked it too). I would imho upgrade.

I could break things in Vista within 30 mins of a fresh install with overclocking & a few BSOD later things would stop working as they should.

I have not been able to do that yet with windows 7.

If your machine is capable of running Vista well then you wont notice to much of a efficiency difference.

If your machine meets the minimum spec of Vista (just) then it is probably going to feel a little faster on Win 7

From a financial perspective no it isnt worth the extra money. I have Vista for my home PC and Win 7 for my work laptop and although I love Win 7 I cant really see the point is spending the money on Win 7 when I could spend that same money on RAM and make my computer feel a lot snappier.

There is no doubt given the choice a fresh I would choose Windows 7 over Vista, but Vista isn't bad. It works fine for me and I will continue to use it on my home PC until I Windows 8

Personally I would say that its not really worth it.

At 75 notes, thats a big price.

Vista with SP2 is every bit as functional as Windows 7 and I really do think that for 75 quid, the only things you will get that are different is

1 - Slightly different visuals, e.g. some control panel stuff is moved about a bit.

2 - Slightly better performance. Even this can be argued about.

My Server and my sons PCs are still on Vista64/SP2 and to be honest I occasionally play games on them, and there is no noticeable difference at all in anything between Win7 and Vista.

If its a choice of XP to Win7 then its a given, but Vista ? - Dont waste money.

I use my PC a lot of the time, and I've recently had to pay £65 to get my system repaired because Windows Update buggered it up. I also lost a lot of my files.

From my perspective and from what most of you guys have said, paying £75 once for a better OS and efficient system in general would be better than having to risk my files and another £65 getting it repaired because Windows Update is ****. I would may increase my RAM to 6GB if I get Windows 7, so I think I will get it.

Thanks for all your advice. :)

Fristly, you should have followed the 3 rules of backing up

So, the fact that you "LOST a lot of your files " is absolutely and 100% YOUR FAULT and not windows update.

You have the option to disable the updates, you have the option to back up your own files and so what you lost is down to you.

I agree though that updates should work, but the fact is that there is always that small chance that it wont.

I myself NEVER put all my eggs into one basket.

My PC down here has multiple drives. I wont give details, but what I do, is have a program called SECOND COPY and that copies the contents of the My Documents folder, onto a Backup folder in another HD.

My HD down here has 4 HDs internall and one USB

My entire LAN has a NAS box plus my Server too.
The Server has a copy of all my files on all my drives on the main PC, plus all my other PCs on the LAN.
The NAS box ONLY has completed torrents - its too slow to be used for anythign else really, but for torrents etc, its great.

So, if any of my HDs ever fail, on any of my PCs I would not lose any data older than a day.

Unless of course I have some kind of Massive failure where both my main PC and my Server both lose their HDs at the same time.

Hmm... I think I might kjnock u pa third Backup Server to backup my backup Server....

But what if that also fails... Hmm... I think I will have to make a Backup Backup of my backup server...

But what if my backup back up server fails...

Hmm...

Well, ok, but seriously, make backups. Failures will happen, if its your fault of the PCs fault, its going to happen. So, have backups for when it does. Then it would be a huge issue when you need to get at your backups.

Sorry, I didn't mean to be rude.

Yeah, I never considered backing up my files because I don't have any important ones on there. Most of the important ones did not get lost.

You were not rude, so no worries. Me too though. I was a little rude myself. Apologies all round, and hugs & kisses later etc.

I mean... I see it all the time.

I had one client that for who the hells knows why, but they were sharing files over the network and took this thought, seemingly too literally...

One PC had some of the files, the other PC had the rest. Both PCs needed all the files.

I told them this was stupid idea when one of the PCs failed and this meant that they could not finish their paperwork because some of the files were missing.

Of course it was up to fat muggins here to sort it out.

I setup a certral file server that the whole office could access, and blocked off the individual PCs.

However, at teh same time, I also gave the fileServer acces to the PCs, so, this also kept a copy of their individual documents too

Well if they were not important enough to need backing up then there is no problem with Windows update loosing loads of your files.

It is FAR too expensive. There is a diffrence. I would say windows 7 is slighly better. It seemd to use less rescources when I had it. But it is not going to change your whole computing world.

I would love to have windows 7 but not at that price. £30 I would consider it as would many others. It is about ime someone devloped an OS that could seriosly give microsoft a problem. I dont see why Apple dont develop thier OS to be able to run on Windows.

They weren't important in the sense that it had important work on it, but it was a pain to loose them. The files lost were things like game editing files, various photos, pictures etc. Not vitally important, but still a pain to loose.

Let's be brutally honest here.

For most people, Windows is too technical a lot of the time. Mac owners don't even have to download drivers...

And you honestly want to say that Linux is a rival to Windows? Can you imagine what your average PC user running Linux would look like?

It wouldn't be pretty.
