Would this be a stupid first bike?

I literally have that exact same bike and other than the fact it's a little quiet it's been great. Seat is quite comfy, good mpg, pretty quick when pushed, handles really well now she's got new tyres on her and looks great in black imo.

edit: also I paid 2.2k for mine so that's a good deal :)

Excellent, thanks for the advice. Is yours an 01?

If you go 600F, mine is a 1999 Carb model and it's fantastic, pulls like a steam train, any of these with 100+ BHP will shift like billy o'... and you can get the FX/FY models from £1500 onwards for solid clean examples... I prefer the older "none fox" front on mine than that later Fi models from 2001 onwards... but that's just me. Plus I love carbs lol.

Sorry, I don't know any bike speak yet? Carberators? Carbs? Fx/fy? Fox?

Is there an advantage for looking for an 01 over an 00 plate?

Personally, I don't understand why they let learners on anything bigger than a 125. They didn't in my day (now I feel old :)). You should get to learn to ride properly and have some experience before they let you on larger cc bikes.

It's also a nice feeling and gives you something to look forward to going from something relatively small to something with a bit more power. Always used to make me smile when I got a bigger bike :)

Do you mean besides learning on a 500CC and passing both tests on a 500C? Surely that's enough to be granted access to big bikes? It's not like I'm learning I'm sitting my test on a 125cc.

Just gonna drop my 2p's worth in here, I hope nobody minds as I was in exaclty the same position when I passed my test some years back.

I was 27 when I passed my test (over 5 years ago now ) on a GS500 ... after passing a week or so later for my first bike I got myself a Ducati Monster S4 which had a very meaty 916cc motor straight out of the Ducati 916 Superbike ... this was a very quick bike with some tremendous torque the kind that you can only get from a V-Twin.

I've just got myself a Ducati 1098s as I'm getting back into biking after a couple of years out but thats another story as owning one Ducati has got me properly hooked on them now, only downside is the cost of them .

What you buy depends on you as a person, I know if I'd have leart to ride a motorbike when I was younger (early 20's) I would have been a hoon, however I learnt when I was 27, I was old enough to be a bit more sensible about things and knew I could trust myself on a more powerful bike.

No matter what advice you are given, chances are you'll go and buy what you want anyway its pretty much always usually the way which is fine as long as you do it sensibly and think it through, end of the day you have to like what you are riding otherwise the appeal goes away.

My advice is if you can trust yourself and know you can be sensible and enjoy a bike like a CBR600F or whatever you choose within sensible reason then go for it, the throttle will only open as far as you want it to ... same as in a car, it's really all about you.

The only time a learner is permitted on a >125cc bike is for the direct access test, either during the test itself or when training under instruction.

The CBR600F gained fuel injection from 2000 the same year the CBR600FS was introduced. I prefer fuel injection, but the older carburettor models were still very good bikes.

In that case don't forget to get whatever you decide restricted to 33bhp then, as if you are taking ur tests on a 125 you will get a restricted license which lasts 2 years, then after that you can take the restrictor off the bike.

Sorry I threw in that extra "I'm"

Its a 500cc I'm on.

Ah ok, your doing the full blown DAS, no probs then ignore my last post lol.

About the 2 bikes your looking at, see if you can go sit on them and judge which feels right, its what i'll be doing next year. As i have a shortlist of like 5 bikes i like, but not even gonna bother checking for real until i have my license + money for them.

I've passed my mod1 and at test standard and ready for mod2 just waiting on good date within the next month or so.

I've also got the cash waiting. This is why I'm now looking, I was the same.

I like the look of the thundercat. Seems to get good reviews and was recommended by my instructor.

The 33bhp rule has changed, thanks to the EU it's now 0.16kw per 1kg up to 33bph. So for a rough example a DRZ400 would now have to be capped at around 22bhp.

Nope perfectly fine as a 1st bike. The one thing i was always told by more experienced friends - YOU ONLY GO AS QUICK AS YOU TWIST THE THROTTLE!

best advice i was given.... although i was never responsible enough to follow it.... :(
3 month ban, 9 points and a few write-offs later i think i've learnt... :D

Really depends on how you feel on a bike. My first bike was a Ducati 748, but this was only because I have been around bikes and been on many throughout my life thanks to my dad. If it were a day 1, no previous experiance other than the lessons and test. I wouldn't. The power will shock you and scare you, ruining the fun.

Get a CBR 500 or similar.
