WoW Legacy Server (if only)

Personally I think one of the downfalls of the game was listening to all the whining players who complained it took too long to level, it was too difficult, too grindy. I'm still a current WoW player having been subscribed since release (and even participated in the beta). At one point I had 5 accounts running for multiboxing.

Getting a character from 1 to 100 these days is ridiculously easy, especially if you have heirloom gear. One of the main reasons I hear for the crackdown on private servers is they have to be seen to be protecting their IP otherwise it sets a precedent for the future.

I remember vanilla WoW fondly but times change and you can't stay in the past forever.

This not an argument

Do people not watch old movies because they r old and special affects etc have moved on?

Do ppl still play chess even tho it uses them most primitive materials possible?

I have paid for vanilla wow i should be allowed to play it!

It would be great if Blizzard would come out with a tiered model. Each expansion they have done people could join and play in. They have the choice of advancing from vanilla to the next expansion. Just simple character/guild progression but you have the choice of sticking on an age or moving on.

Thing was the server code was purely their own, which meant they were not in breech of any copyright, and they wasn't profiting from it. Blizzard couldn't actually do a damn thing.
I can't see why they decided to shut it down instead of telling them to get lost.

It was a breach of copyright, for starters.

Having dedicated servers for each expansion after vanilla, would attract quite a few older players back I would imagine. They could offer expansion transfer too, so if you got bored you could then move up to next one, for a cost obviously. :)

I personally had the best time at WOTLK , but that was more down to community than anything. I did like Mists purely because flying wasn't a huge pathway to nowhere that i gave up on. If flying hadn't been so hard in Draenor, I'd not have quit. Would happily play older content all-day but Blizzard have said time and time again that they don't want to do this.

This is what I think as well, seems like the best solution. Hardly splitting the community, if players are only coming back for the older realms.

Personally, I thought the path to Draenor flying was pretty easy, with the benefit that once you'd unlocked it on one character, it was unlocked for the entire account. Didn't take more than a couple of weeks to complete either (most of which was the rep grind for the 3 factions).

I would play again. I've actually considered hosting a closed one (Wrath), sadly i lack the knowledge necessary to run it trouble free from a coding perspective.

Found this in the AMA, stats of their PvP server alone. One of those info list images, quite long.

PvP server stats

Bare in mind that they had little to no advertising, it was all word of mouth/keyboard.

Holy crapp. That's a decently populated server...

in my opinion op? blizzard are just another company which has turned full greed mode. They don't give a **** about their players anymore. I left in cata and made mistake of returning in WoD.

The game is just garbage tbh... something at blizzard changed over last 5 years. They are not the same company.

If they released a legacy server i'd probably resub... sad thing is that server wasn't even profiting at all.... literally just the evil corporation at it's finest. If they were making money fair enough... but they weren't. And despite the interest blizzard won't do it. Why? to get you to buy their next ****** expansion with demon hunters crappily tacked onto the game.

TLDR. **** blizzard.

Since playing retail vanilla wow i have not found a game that comes close to what i have now been given twice from it

My pc can run any game on the market but id alyways bypass Steam for the retail vanilla wow exe

If u havent exp it properly then i cannot explain it for you

It won't be as fun as you remember it. Unfortunately you can't relive it. Same happened with ever quest and it can't compare to the nostalgia (and everquest was a far superior experience first time round). No on wants to do ubrs 50 times for gearing and attunement while waiting on people to level to do Molton Core again :P

Signed.

The letter is written pretty badly by the way, waffles on too much and comes over too polite. Should be been much shorter and simpler.

If you guys liked Vanilla WoW you might also like Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen. It is a new MMO going back to the roots of the genre and taking inspiration from games like EverQuest and Vanguard. It is designed to be a really social game. There won't be much soloing of content you'll be forced to group up with other players to complete content so you can make friends with other people. There will be no flying mounts or fast travel of any kind.

It'll be a return to the glory days of MMOs were people knew each other and the content was hard and required skilled players to defeat it. Quests will actually mean something and there won't be stupid exclamation marks over NPC heads telling you they have a quest. You'll actually need to talk to them to find out if they have a quest making the game even more immersive.

This is the one MMO I am really looking forward to. It sounds awesome from reading their website and taking part on their forums.

Check it out here:

Reverse engineering is fine...it's when you use reverse engineering to copy someone's product and start offering a competing service using it you've got a problem, which is how this is in the eyes of the law.

FWIW, Blizzard should probably just run their own Legacy server....but meh, it's up to them!

So-called "black box" reverse engineering is fine, even if you launch a competing service/product. The only stipulation is that you cannot know the inner workings (code in this instance) of the thing you're reversing.

But you can quite legally record all outputs for a given input, and then create a device yourself which gives these same outputs for the same inputs. Totally legal.

What isn't legal, as has been pointed out, is using their IP (names of items, locations, NPC dialogues, quest text, etc, etc), and modifiying the client to connect to the non-Blizz servers.

Did u read the link in my post? U sound like the guy from Blizzard

Nostalrius proves that everything u have said is incorrect

Have been playing on Nos since approx 1 month after it opened...

My guild was the 3rd guild to kill Nefarian when BWL was released (playing a MT, same as i did on vanilla all those years ago), we have been prepping for AQ40 and were participating on the PTR testing each boss b4 it was released

When i rolled the character last April i always told myself "it will not be the same as retail vanilla" and i was so wrg. It really was like playing all those years ago and more....

I played retail clearing 2 wings in Naxx prior to TBC being released. Clearing Naxx was behind my motivation to roll on Nos (which i may add is my first private server exp) and even tho i didnt achieve that goal, the journey Nos gave me was so much more than i could have expected, the same if not better than vanilla retail. I met great people who i will remain friends with for many years to come, participated in great world events such as Emerald Dragons, Kazzak, Azu and also enjoyed great world pvp.

The satisfaction of 8/8 of Wrath + my Chromaggus shield was still like it was wayyyy back then also :D

The average 8-9k (13k at points during the day) people on the server daily enhanced the experience, the world was alive, grps being ran constantly both for raids and all dungeons (and i mean all), lots of trade both on AH and in /2, constant interaction with the chars around you...

I am devistated it has been shut down but if brings attention to a service which is crying out to be supplied then it was all worth it
