WP8.1

I didn't think I would, but really liking the new start screen. Can developers please update there apps for translucent.
Dont know why developers didnt have this before anyway, you could always have translucent tiles and it just showed the theme colour behind. It always really annoyed me having 80% of home screen one colour and then the other 20% random.

Its a small API MS put in, I would say most will update to it.

Actually if you look when you are organising tiles, and they do that floating hovering type thing, the solid colour ones go slightly transparent in their nature, if they could keep the solid colour like that and the solid white text, that would be good as an option.

At least one of my big tiles will be sorted. True calendar 8 is being overhauled for 8.1 :). He's already working on it.
Although I suppose I should try the inbuilt one now. I forgot about that, until I typed this.

Edit - still useless live tile doesn't show what's needed.

Updated my Lumia 925 to this last week and really like some changes they've made, feels much better all round! I don't like how the WiFi toggle in the notification pulldown just goes to the wifi settings page though. I haven't enabled the extra column on the start screen though, as the icons looked too small. I imagine it will work/look better on the new 8.1 devices with full HD screens.

Store is much better, and it doesn't chuck you into the apps list after selecting to install something which I like!

I do wish the search button that when pressed would just do a search in that place/app instead of going to Bing though, the black across the bottom looks silly with just the search icon on it and the 3 dots in the corner.

Battery life seems to be going down faster as well, and I haven't tried Cortana yet, as I can't be bothered to download all the US language packs. I read it will be UK as well in the final release though :)

Hmm will it be like that in the official release? I can see changing the region causing problems?

To start with yes, as it's only for USA to start with roll out worldwide at a latter date (Cortana not wp8.1)

Other than some words having a different spelling and Cortana obviously not programmed for uk accents yet. Other than that had no issue.

As to battery, I can't tell. My battery has gone down from ~50hrs to 42hrs, however I'm using a fair bit of Bluetooth which I wasn't before. New work van can actually handle music through Bluetooth, so no more plugging it in by cable, so that might well account for the shorter battery life on it's own.

How do you get 42 hours? Before the update I could get around 16 hours, at the moment I'm getting 12 hours.

Do you have emails and stuff syncing much?

Not sure what phone you have, but I have Lumia 1320, which has a massive 3450mah battery.

Emails sync as they come in.

TO THOSE WITH BATTERY ISSUES AFTER DOING THE 8.1 UPDATE!

ALL of your apps background tasks will be set to "on" after the update and it reinstalls all the Apps, so it could be crushing your battery, and your apps background tasks are now controlled in Battery Sense.

Where is battery sense located? Got data sense and storage sense. Can't see anything related to battery sense.

The only thing I can see is "usage" under battery saver in the settings. You can set each app to allow or deny it to run in the background

Ahah, I'm on a 920.

Have checked the battery saver and not much is allowed to run in the background, there are a couple I can get rid of tho, shall see.

VPN! Finally!

Although I'm on a Lumia 620, so no idea if/when I will get the update.

Far to late to save WP8 though. Some of this stuff (I.e. seperate audio and ringer volumes) is utterly basic, base line stuff that should have been in since day 1.
