WWIIO: Battleground Europe

I would love to start Playing this again :( but really dont have the time any more :( Its looking better than ever and Unity2 will make so much of an improvement to the gfx it will be amazing :)

Well hopefully battleground won't be going away anytime soon. All they need is a player base boost to get a bit of extra income and they can start the serious work that's needed on the game. With unity 2 coming by the end of the year the better graphics will hopefully bring a lot of new players next year.

Well I think they have alreay started, indeed the've never stopped. :)

I wonder if this Chinese release will lead to an increase in development staff? If it does take off to any degree over there, you never know.

Im tempted to give this a go, shame about the graphics although as the OP stated this is still a brilliant game. Going to download the 14 day trial tonight.

Got a 7 kill streak just now! Led in a bush with my rifle and just waited for ei to just keep on running into a certain ditch lol :D

I still remember my first sortie like that. Absolutely awesome feeling. I remember hunting EI behind their main assault on a FB, I was up on a big hill watching them come, I'd dart from bush to bush, get within 50m and then pick them off before running back to a good cover spot. Went on for an hour before the attack ended and I ran back (15min run) to RTB.

Not as far as I know, although I guess http://unity3d.com/unity/whats-new/unity-2.0.html gives you some kind of idea.

However, I really cant see it looking much like those screenshots and still remaining playable.

That's actually a completely different engine. There's actually a legal battle still ongoing about their use of Unity as the name for the engine. CRS had it long before this company started.

Any screenshots / videos of the new Unity 2 engine in action?

Unity 2 at first will look pretty similiar. What it will do though is let them use higher poly models and better shader effects along with a better detailed terrain. We'll see all those come in through '09. This time next year it'll hopefully look a lot different then it does now :)

Never knew that, had always assumed it was that one they were refering to.

I seem to remember them saying the new engine should allow them to make terrain/buildings a lot more destructible as well.. I think?

Iv played this since 2002,

Iv just come back from a bit of a break, and i am enjoying it again. I too am a member of 40 commando and was also a member of the original 1stRM that 40comm formed from.

My game name is "northen" if any of you gents happen to see me (or kill me if your of a grey colour ;) )

The games evolved over time, and not always to my liking TBH, but its the only game iv ever had that i end up coming back too.

see you out there S!

regards

1st play went well. My very first sortie in a Hawk-75 resulted in downing a Bf-109E4 and destroying a German 40mm FlaK 28 with strafing attacks, then in my second sortie, chewing a JU-87 apart. Then to further hook me in, I managed to down a JU-52 making a parachute drop over Luxembourg with fire from my own 40mm Bofors :D

lol.. you're probably the only player in the game who got a kill on their first sortie ;)

And as a fighter as well. Well done! :D

The 1.29 open beta is going live this week by all accounts. Looking forward to that. Going to be a couple of new planes, the Spitfire Mk 1b and the Bf 109 E1, as well some new GFX, UI, and chat stuff, fixes etc.

One interesting thing is the Unity Engine upgrade. One of the developers (Gopher) says of that:

Just what is the Unity upgrade? First and foremost it’s a refactoring or modernization of our entire code base. The Unity Game Engine is fundamentally eight years old. Sure we’ve changed a lot over the years but the basic interaction between code modules and the foundations have not undergone major overhaul. This has been a major undertaking over the last three years. Our game has very specific needs. In order to support infantry level combat in an environment where tanks need to be able to fire on targets at 3000m and planes need to cross vast distances at hundreds of miles an hour require some very specific requirements from an engine. When we started WWIIOL we realized that no engine out there could do what we needed so we built our own. Over the years we’ve realized that there still isn’t an engine out there that can meet our requirements (believe me, I’ve looked at them ALL) and so we need to improve what we have.

That is an indication of how different this game is.

Looking forward to trying out 1.29 too. Should have some time over the weekend to give it a go. Spit 1B should be fun :)

Any of you guys still playing it after trying it out? I'm still around if you need some help in game still. Try and find an active squad and they'll be more then happy to train you up.

Keep an eye out in game for a guy called Fearny. He's a dedicated trainer so will be able to take you to the training server for some 1 on 1 training if you want or he can just help you out on the live server. Tell him I sent you :)

Well my mate has already started playing this as a result of this thread/me mentioning it, and he loves it! I'm still yet to sign up but will soon :D
