X-Com 2 - Announced

They imo needed to heavily pad out the customization and weapons gadgets etc etc but doesn't look like they have so this just looks like new maps to me.

Pretty sure each weapon is customisable now. So you add say... a sight that gives better crits or a base weapon may come with a better receiver for suppression (that was my understanding of it).

Considering the original was "base gun + any carried scopes/etc" that's certainly MORE customisation.

Here, a picture of weapon customisation:

As far as "just new maps"... hmmm, maybe have a read around. New enemies, new systems in game for things (like starting concealed, better building damage etc options), lots more custom stuff, lots more modding options. It's not like a totally new game, but I don't think it really needs to be.

Without detailing the thread (and without wanting to start a new thread for a single question) in the first xcom how are you supposed to capture a live alien?

Every time I try getting close they just kill me, lost 3 good guys trying it :(

Get someone in close in heavy cover, if you can flank the dude you're trying to cap with another guy the AI tends to respond to that with moving into better cover rather than taking shots.

Give the zapper to a guy who got the "sprinter" perk too (I think thats in EU).
If you've bothered with EW you should have flashbangs I think (or are they LW only?) which makes life way easier.

(again a minor derail but I've found myself giving smokes and flashbangs to loads of my guys in LW has made things much more managable)

I changed the ini file to increase the pace of long war, i like the harder difficulty but I can't stand having to do 50 missions per R&D cycle.

I've edited my ini to create a difficult & about tripple the length of the game game - with all the additional tech tree stuff.

I've removed the base aim bonuses on all difficulties but kept them fight the higher rank enemies, it makes the progression feel smoother - I've also heavily reduced the repair/rearm interceptor speed & increase the fighter health for those early skirmishes.

Fatigue shouldn't last more than 5 days & I've reduced injury timers to a 30d max for critical.

I just slightly tweaked the accuracy on scope/laser sight (up a little) as it feels a little unbalanced otherwise (alien shots feel way more accurate and I was getting murdered even with everyone sat in high cover with smokes).

I had a bug in an old version where weapons occasionally straight up disappeared rather than appearing in engineering for repair so heavy lasers were also tweaked to be pretty easy to produce. I'm past it now (higher tier) but the level of customisation in long war is amazing :) You can totally make it as hard/easy as you like and tweak bits that are a personal irritation :)

I have a... nice bug where a couple of my oldest members have perks/loadout options they shouldn't have (like my main assault can equip the throwable scout sensor buoy thing) due to upgrading LW versions mid campaign :D Adds a bit of variety and makes her a bit more unique.

Still waiting on cd keys for mine too. Kind of confused on release date. Countdown timer suggests early Friday morning. But a pre load picture on steams product page under pre load suggests Feb 4th 11pm for zone 2 which the uk is in. http://i.imgur.com/WxEzAwz.jpg

Be great if it comes out tomorrow evening

Looking at that too... I feel my Australian VPN is likely getting abused again ;) :D (assuming CD-keys pony up the code before 6pm tomorrow) I had fallout 4 from about 2pm the day before release here, likely tempted to repeat the VPN trickery :D

Disclaimer:
Yes, the SSA (steam subscriber agreement) disallows it. I've not had issue, you may, don't come crying etc :P

My method is:

  1. connect the VPN.
  2. go in steam.
  3. change region and payment options (payment options will be where you are with the VPN and where you were previously (so if connected to say, Japan the options will be GBP or JPY, if you get the message about contacting support to change payment options you've connected wrongly with the VPN).
  4. restart steam.
  5. let it activate and do any day zero patching.
  6. go offline mode in steam.
  7. close steam.
  8. disconnect VPN.
  9. if the game is an offline one I usually disable my network adapter to be sure.
  10. open steam and play.
  11. at some point a suitable time after release (even a few hours after) I'll reconnect to steam and put things back to UK.
I'd suggest you DO NOT buy games using VPN as that is far more likely to get your account messed with. So long as you've paid for it in a legit way I don't think steam really care all that much.

Yeah, i think they've done quite a lot to improve the game in many different areas. The customisation of weapons perhaps could be better, but its not BF either. Having to decide upon which weapon upgrade to attach is just a different approach, it gives you decisions to make. If they'd just had 4 upgrade spots, scope, barrel, grip & magazine and you just put in a better item, theres no tough decision.
I prefer the 4-slot way, but 2 slots and 'do you, dont you' makes for a better game IMO.

I've watched a few different reviews last month and a couple since, plus the PAX panel, and i cant remember seeing something i was disappointed with, nor can i recall the reviewer having any complaints, everyone seems to be of the opinion that these decisions either make the game more interesting and less annoying, or turn it on its head without reinventing it and changing the whole spirit of the game.
The only thing that seems daft was the mech clipping through the ceiling and silly things like that.

I'd be very surprised if the modding community didnt create a mod which gave all weapons 1 slot for every accessory type they could add, and tiers of accessories to go into them. That accessibility is likely to give us so many options to get the game exactly where we'd want it.

I saw someone bringing up the idea of a Starship Troopers mod, its stuff like that which i think would be really impressive, and its amazing that the devs are supporting these possibilities.

On the subject of mods, I know one of the firaxis dudes on that panel was talking about stuff being purely an effect (rather than a full on item+texture) and he mentioned squirrels and birds being effects too.

A squirrel gun was suggested so I'd expect a weapon customisation mod for "squirrel ammo" to appear :D

Given up on Long War for now. Too much RNG, which was there in vanilla to be fair, but is now much more punishing.

Stoked for X-Com 2 still but a bit disappointed at the toned down base building side. I enjoyed that part of previous games and was hoping for more complexity, not less.

Pigeon gun wasnt it? but yeah theres the potential for people to create a really silly but fun version. The same core game, just done in a novelty manner.

That was one thing that i liked the look of with XCOM:EU, but it ended up feeling a little more pointless and annoying.

I think i wanted something closer to Sim Tower :D but more expansions of those rooms would have been nice. Either extending the function of an existing room, or a new room which let you do something new, so if you wanted you could focus on a Mech route or Psy-Ops, or go half & half, that sort of thing. The way the current one looks, its gone the opposite way and its more like a mobile app solution, when the PC route would be to double-down and get more geeky and technical.

Xcom is a great game, but I would like to see it with more complexity in all regions. Bigger and more realistic damage, better worsening of damage, move, emt and other stats depending on what part of body is damaged, more research to the point there's loads if different ways you could do missions and so much you can't research it all before end game.

And less bloody missions.

Ahhh yes, pigeon gun.

Either way... both? :D

I'm biased as I'm totally stoked for this but I DO think you're going to get quite a long way towards this with X-com 2 over EW/EU. Long war adds a few layers but X-com 2 looks to be going balls deep on this sort of thing (maybe not body part damage levels effecting soldiers but certainly most of the other bits you wanted like research options and not everything being possible/needed). Have a watch of the tactics deep dive I linked above, there's a HELL of a lot of ground covered.

Preloading this now

I am not going to be spending much time on the forums for a while.:D

Have been a massive fan of this series since the original came out.

I hope the Chryssalids have not learned to fly in this new version.

Almost finished the preload and can't wait for this now :D Also been a fan since the original (even had the PS1 version with a mouse!)
