X1900 Thread - no nonsense

i'll probably wait to see what nvidia g71 is like, 10% more performance isn't enough to justify having to use the pos that is ccc.

Ive got a slight dought in buying the x1900xt cause after seeing on another thread on here that farcry is going to be dx10, and by the way looks stunning. Is there any point in buying a £400+ card when dx10 cards will be out next year. I was hoping that the x1900xt would last me a 2-3 years, but will it still play dx10 games. So ive got some options:
Buy the x1900xt and make it last for about 2-3 years and put up with not playing dx10 games :(
Buy the x1900xl and change the card when the first or second lot of dx10 cards come out.

So what should i do??

Does dx9 cards still work with dx10 games, cause i cant rember having a dx7 card playing dx8 games

Just an opinion. But if I was concerned about a dx10 upgrade, but still needed a card(s) to play the latest games on max. I'd consider the X1800XT or 2x7800GT's in SLI. You will still get nice frame rates and no problems actually playing the games. If you wait for the price drops after the 1900 release, the resale value for the 1800 should be OK for awhile. 2-3 years is a looong time for graphics cards.

bakes0310: With too many unknowns its hard to make a solid choice. No doubt in the future more information will come to light, so no point thinking about it now as a lot will change.
Some key information ive either read else where or come to a conclusion myself:
* No way is anyone going to bring out a game that is purely DX10 - there will be some DX9 compatibility etc built in, so i dont think there is any need to worry about that - although its been said for Vista there will only be direct access to DX10, all other DX versions will be accessed through a wrapper layer.
* With DX10 etc, lots of new features will come about, so i think now more than ever, 2 to 3 years IS a VERY long time :}

You saying that 2-3 years is a long time having the same graphics card :(
Well i siuppose it is the longest i had a graphics card for was nearly 2 years and i couldnt play games in all its glory like i want to do.

The reason why i want to keep the x1900xt for as long as 2-3 years is cause of the price of £400+ im sure that the card will play all of this years up coming games on max settings at 1280x1024 the only games it might have to play on high settings and not max is:
UT 2007
quake wars
So really it should be future proof for a good year. But after that i might have to play at some settings on the dreaded meduim settings :p

At 1280x1024 its more about the cpu than the gpu. Well maybe not more, but at least worth thinking about. The X1800XT is a stonking card especially if (when) it hits sub £300.

For pure FPS yes... but if you are CPU limited and have a good GFX card you should be able to get large amounts of AA/AF for "free".

Would you say if i get the x1900xt and maybe later in the year get a cpu like the x2 range i would be looking good for 2 years and should cope quite nicely.

am not bothered about any more than 1280x1024... only got a 17" monitor so there is no real need for more.

that is why am really debating getting x1900, i could go for 1800 and an opteron.. or maybe dual core... im not going further than 1280x1024

Yeah, but I'm thinking more about "playability". I hate the slide shows that these games can become, in fact, anything that distracts from the experience. It's the only real reason I upgrade apart from the ubiquitous willy waving. There's a thought, do you think the games designers are in cahoots with the manufacturers?

same as me im sticking at 1280x1024 for along time right up until games stop running at 1280x1024 which will be like never :p

Im planning on going to m2 but im going to give it a couple years to fully flourish with vista.

I would say sod it just do it mate buy the x1900xt like me, so what if dx10 will be coming out we'll cope with are very nice cards :)

EDIT: look how other ppl cope thats still got p4 and socket A they still play games pretty well so we should be fine for dx10.

For me that's a no brainer. The DC's going to make much more of an impact on the way the machine behaves, not just gaming. I see all the opty scores and think nice, but no way would I go back to a single core cpu. I just don't think the 1900 is going to show over the 1800 in games at low res, not when playing. Not for the extra money, anyway.

I thought the dx10 cards were the real next gen ones being released in the summer, and you wont be able to play dx10 games on dx9 i think, but thats no worry as it will take a long time for those games to be produced, they won't exactly be flooding out. :)

there bound to support dx9 or else there wont be many sales with there dx10 only games. Its like fear thats got dx8 support so its bound to be like that for other future dx10 games with some dx9 support.

I don't think it supposed to be faster, just cheaper. The XTX should have the edge. I posted a link earlier to a guy with both cards and he says there is nothing between the two.

i love this graphics card race its fostering funny, i expect when i see the first dx10 game that i want when its out ill change my card again even if it hasnt been 2 years.
