Friend wants to upgrade his 939 - currently a single core opteron. Which are better clockers between 3800+ and 4200+? Seen people mention 4200 Toledo cores, anyone brought a 4200+ recently? What steppings are the best?

He has a Asus A8V, AC Freezer Pro, Kingmax 2Gb (not sure what exactly but got a couple of screens in CPU-Z)

I bought and fitted a 3800+ X2 Toledo core last week and its currently doing 2.5 (at 9 x 278) with out an hassle, i've not tried going past 2.5 at the moment as im looking to get a 120mm fan with 80 adaptor shroud to fit on my heat sink as if I turn the RPM up on my 80mm fan it makes nasty noise which annoys me.

Can anyone please tell me what are safe temperature for a 3800+ X2, thanks

spend another tenner and avoid the 3800 overclocking issues and get the 4000+ Sandiego - its regularly clocked to 2.8 - 2.9ghx no problem with the help of a better cooler in some cases and in some cases with the stock cooler - seriously - its the best idea imo.

But were on about the 3800+ X2 dual core not the single core.

i know but i wasnt aware of the dual cores actually being any quicker - i mean, you can pick up a single core 4000+ for sixty quid or a dual core 3800 for 50 quid....................erm.....?

Well more games are going to be using dual core so its better to upgrade to a dual core than a single core.

Dont you get a higher multi with the X2 4200+?? its also not that much more expensive and theortically has a higher chance of clocking higher.

Yeah 11x on the 4200 vs 10x on the 3800, it's the reason I went with the 4200. Very nice chips indeed shame about the tiny cache though.

agreed - give it 1mb and you will be sailing - however, in a few months ill need new mobo - ram and dual core Intel chip so i cant really go splashing any more cash about - speshilly when im a cheap student.

If you are doing with intel in a few months dont bother upgrading, your system is still pretty fast.

Im pretty sure my 3800+ X2 toledo will do 2.8 if not little more, im just waitting on a 120mm fan and a 80mm - 120mm shroud so I can clock some more with out the damn noisey 80mm fan I have running on low speeds to keep noise down.

If your ram can't clock to 280 FSB atleast then it would be more wise to go for a 4200+ X2 due to the 11 x multi as it would help you to get higher clocks on lower FSB capable ram.

I bought this to just keep my current system going until I do a bigger upgrade later this year, not seen a massivce improvemtn over my 3200 winchester as yet but I think i'll need to do a fresh install of windows to see more performance, I think i'll put my new vista on instead of XP seeing as I've got a retail version :D

To be honest I think a better option may be a dual core Opteron.

Best buy at the moment seems to be the 170. With the recent price reductions it may be possible to pick one up for £70ish. I should perform better than any of the processors above.

As his memory wont clock to far, how would a 165/170 @ stock (or possibly with a small OC) compare to say a stock X2 3800/4200+ and a 3800/4200 @ 2.5Ghz+?
