X2 3800+ or 4200+

I have to ask, what settings are you using to get this? Im guessing it's needing some crazy volts.

My mb is a cheapo asus and 1.4 is the most it does dropped down a muti to 10 x 295 still playing with it, my 3800 with my other msi mb didnot want to oc passed 2.5.

3800+ imo runs a tad hot when o/c, would suggest top-end aftermarket air cooler if you would like to reach 2.8Ghz.

As his memory wont clock to far, how would a 165/170 @ stock (or possibly with a small OC) compare to say a stock X2 3800/4200+ and a 3800/4200 @ 2.5Ghz+?
Ignore the memory, once on a 133 divider, it probably won't be overclocked much if at all anyway. Go for a dual core Opty, it has more cache and will probably clock better than a x2 3800/4200.

Make sure he is using a recent bios as i was checking for the asus a8v and i think opterons need either 1015 bios or 1017 bios. 170 optys defo need latest asus site said.

pretty much all recent 939 dualcores have been solid.

ive heard more about LCB9E's, but id guess 2.7 on stock volts 3.0 if your willing to push for it.

Just bought a 3800+ x2 socket 939 myself off ocuk since they just lowered price a fiver so is now £41.11 and got some mx-1 and postage was £3.50 so in all it was about £50.

Decided to risk getting one of these than a 2nd hand one because of the apparent overclockability on these batches there selling lately. Was gona get used one from a member here but it wasnt prime tested for stability but was retail and got to 2.8ghz. Still these latest batches ocuk are selling as i said seem to hit 2.8ghz no probs so i hope im lucky and get same chip as all you have got recently. If not im gona cry if i get a crap clocker that only goes to 2.4ghz or less. :p

Friend said i didnt need to buy special cleaning fluid and just some strong spirit should do with a tissue. Got some aftershock and jack daniels, i think i know which i wont be using to clean hsf lol. :D

Mind if i find that the price goes down any more im gona kick off with ocuk when a lower price that isnt on special of the week comes up next week or week after. Well maybe not kick off but be peeved off indeed.

Am popping into OcUK later this afternoon to pick up a 4200+, can't argue with £54 really can you. It's going to be replacing my current A64 3200+ under the Freezer Pro64 cooler, does anyone have a recommended thermal paste? I was thinking of the Artic MX-1 but does anyone have a tried and tested suggestion?

Awww man i payed £50 now its gone down oh well its only £5. I used the stock cooler on mine, with the original tin. :D
Its at 38C idle at 2.5ghz.
Edit im gona have to buy a heat sink.
When testing at stock volts at 2.6ghz it hit 70C

Will you all please stop talking about running a 3800 past 2.5? :)
My board tops out at 250, so I can't go past 2.5 with the one I bought today. If people keep talking about higher clocks, I'll feel bad :(

I'm showing restraint...I'm horribly tired, so I'm leaving it in the box until tomorrow.

I wouldnt go over 55C on full load.

70C surely is to hot and dangerous ?

I got mine at 2.55 and it idles at around 32-35 core0 and 28-30 core1 48-54 core0 and 46-50 core1 load.

Im using Hyper 6 to cool it with a 120mm fan attached, im sure I can get the temps down some more if I get more air in the case as i've only got 1 120mm fan blowing in my stacker with the crossflow fan on low.
