X4 Foundations

I get the vibe of Rebirth from this which isn't a good thing. I'll hold off for now and see what the modding community does.

Don't let the fact it's using Rebirth engine etc fool you mate. Still has bugs but this one is in a MUCH better place off the bat. It's more like X3 than Rebirth.

Actually finding this hard to get into. Granted I've not done many of the tutorials but as a veteran x player this should be a doddle to get to grips with. Only just figured out I need to engage autopilot if I want flick through the UI whilst travelling as without it travel mode is disabled.

Still loads of bits and bobs I'm not clear on. What's the difference between travel mode and SETA?

Travel mode is only your ship moving faster. SETA is the whole game moving faster.

not sure what you mean travel mode is shift+1, autopilot never uses it by default? I always shift+1 again after autopilot engages.

or just hire a pilot and let him drive for you then switch seats with him once you want to manually do something

There's a very important option in the Settings>Gameplay Settings menu. Turning ON 'Maintain Speed While In Menus' will allow you to continue at high speed in 'Travel Mode' while you're pottering about in the map or ship information screens. Was driving me nuts till I found that out.

(also... turn off 'Roll Autocorrect' as well while you're there. We're all adults and know how to fly in 3D space thank you)

It's a little rough around the edges, but no crashes for me and 32 hours sank this weekend.

I've not done that with a game in over 10 years, maybe longer.

Girlfriend is leaving though...

and its running ok, some graphical glitchs when looking at some spesific random spots but running ok.

i think getting kidnapped when investigating some one else's ship must be a rite of Passage :D ;)

Well I bit the bullet and bought it.

I've run into a problem already, but it's probably just me not knowing enough about how things work. I did a mission that culminated in a space station appearing from some kind of spatial tear. The station now belongs to me, and the next task is to construct a dock.

Constructing a dock requires materials and a build manager to be on board the station. However, since the station does not yet have a dock, I can find no way to actually get those things onto the station. When I try to hire people and assign them to the station, the UI just says the destination is unreachable. It's a bit chicken-and-egg. Anyone know how to work around this?

Ah, that makes sense. Similar to how you had to hire a TL in previous games to deploy your stations? I don't think I've seen any floating around in X4 though, and if it's anything like X3, it'll be crazy expensive to buy one.

You need to hire a construction ship (find one, right click and hire) and add funds to the station so it can buy the materials needed. Make sure you confirm the dock your building when you build plan.

After you done these, you can then see what the requirements are and how much it needs. This should cost you around 400k (50k for hire, 360 for parts).

this vid explains it

I've already locked in the building plan - a single basic dock, and yeah, the cost estimate it gives is between 300k and 400k. Can I not just load up the construction ship with the materials though? I have to set buy orders and wait for them to be fulfilled?

The construction ship doesn't get the mats the station does iirc. I think you can get the mats yourself but I don't know how you 'give' them to the station. It can be done though. I just let the station do it and it sent out buy orders then npcs came and sold them to it.

Neither do I. Which raises the question... how do NPC traders 'give' them to the station?

Sorry I edited my above post. They sell them to the station by landing normally. Station gives out buy orders and they fulfill them.

EDIT: Just thought, how can they land to sell them as the bloomin dock isn't built yet lol! I think they give them to the storage thing that appears when you build something.

Ok that makes sense now, watching that video. It's a build storage area that appears, and NPC traders drop their wares off there. I assume it's possible for the player to dock there too, to drop materials off.

I don't have enough money yet to actually start the build, so I'm gonna go do some more missions until I have about a half mil credits, then I'll start the build.

Been watching Cohh play this over the weekend before he rage quit yesterday, was impressed with the Devs being in his chat taking notes of the bugs and putting patches out to fix them, doesn't help the average player who doesn't stream on twitch though.

Still on my list to buy as this will be my first X game, waiting for them to put some more bug fix patches out before I jump in.

Played the very first game and loved the hugeness of it all but never got that far in it. However, I've totally got into X4. Spent most of the weekend getting to grips with the UI and flight controls.

However today after work , I finally got my HOTAS setup and it's a nother ball game now. Loving it. The UI (still bad) has sort of clicked.

And it happens I'm now at the part where I also have to build the station so thanks for the heads up on where to go.

Just set up my first auto mining dood so hoping to start my mining empire :) The trader didn't really work out so I ended up sending him into the abyss. Tee hee. Be warned minions! Fail me and you shall not return.
