What ever you do, dont use the Arctic Cooling ATI Sliencer 4, As i nearly had my Card die from Overheating.

Dont know why tho. Dont know the core temp at when it Actifacted.
You should have been using the Mark 5 cooler for the R480 core, i suspect the R420 core is somewhere else on the PCB, hence it wasn't cooling it. artifacts generally indicate memory problems i think, where the RAM chips on both sides of the PCB cooled? whenever you install a new cooling system you should test it to make sure it is working before hitting it with something like a game or 3dMark

i can't see how the AC can fail to cool your card if you install the correct one correctly, my load temps have dropped from 70 to 50. i think the only way to do it would be to not plug in your fan cable or block the exhaust

Are these still worth getting if you can get an x850 Pro for the same price?

I'd say yes, these are still worth getting over the x850 pro. The x850 pro can't be unlocked can it (but I'm not totally sure)? So I'd say for defo the x800gto2 for the moment.

lol

What i dont get is, the thing cooled really well, and as i used it more and more, it started to get hotter...

Any Ideas?

Besides, if i would have bought that, nothing would have lined up, and its layout is EXACTLY the same as the X800 XT

Will those coolers help with overclocking the core?
Or will it just bring down the max temperature (and thus probably extending the life).
If it's just the latter, then I'm not too bothered. GFX cards only seem to last me about 2 years maximum, before I get swept along on another band wagon.
But, if it will actually help me get better speeds. Hmmm, I'm considering...

Looks like i have an excellent core as clocked upto 600mhz now and all stable :D but the memory is pants on mine starts to artifact at 510mhz :( no matter what i have the core set to. thinking of either taking the cooler off and reseating it or buying an arctic cooler to see if its a heat issue. still more than happy with the performance though

Yea it's really weird how different some cards perform - Mine goes up to 600Mhz memory, but not much higher than 520Mhz core. Some (like yours, you lucky lucky person!) go up to 600Mhz core etc! Luck of the draw I guess, but whatever you get it's always going to be good. :)

Highest I've ever seen, period. Well done! :D

What cooling etc. are you using?

Im using an Arctic Cooling ATI Silencer 4.

Gonna try some of the Silver Thermal Solution because the cheap nasty stuff that comes with it doesnt seem to work all that well...

I wanna try to get the card to go Higher, but i dont think it will. but its worth a shot

Hmmm, I still haven't put any Arctic Silver 5 on mine, maybe that would give me a bit more stability. I can reach 540/640MHz but it can be dodgy as all hell sometimes, so I leave it on 532/632MHz for piece of mind.

I'd also be tempted to go for an Arctic Silencer or maybe a Zalman, but I'm not sure. I think the only thing stopping me is that the stock cooler on these cards just looks so damn cool, not to mention being low-profile.

Can get 550/580 on mine rock solid stable, trouble is it gets a bit toasty under load (high 70's) Took the stock cooler off cleaned it all up and stuck as5 on instead. Didnt do a thing bar around 1-2c cooler :/ Think i will try the AC5 rev2 and see what happens.

Have the fan on at 100% as well gets a bit noisy, hopefully the arctic cooler will be a bit more silent.

Friendly bit of advice phrozen....Change your sig mate before the dons eat you, the requirements are here. click :)

Sig Changed. lol

I can get the card at 580Core 630 mem... And it doesnt atifact

Drop your Mem speed to 590. and up core speed to 590, might work alright then

locutus12 suggested I do that the day I got the card delivered and unfortunately it didn't seem to do a thing. :( 540MHz is either the max clock for my core or I am just not going to enough effort with the cooling.

I never put my fan speed over 75%, I find it to be loud at anything above, but even at 75% it's never gone over 62ºC. Then again, I did my overclocking and artifact testing with the fan at 100% and it still didn't help.

Guessing it's just the core, but I'm really happy with the clocks I got anyway, and the performance in games.

Sorry i meant 540****

Just wondering what you all thought of as an acceptable length of time to leave the artifact checker on for to consider a particular clock speed "stable"...

I'm impatient, y'see? ;)

I usually just let it run the scan five times. If you see no artifacts on the first one or two times, chances are it's stable, if you see none on the fifth, it's probably as rock solid as it'll ever be.

Ah, I didn't realise there was a set scan period. I thought you just left it running for a certain length of time (like 20 minutes or so, although I've not left it longer than 5 so far).

I class mine as stable but not really, i.e; I might get an artifact every 90 mins or so :D

Happily running mine @ 590 / 604. It never seems to go over 65. I'm sure I could get more out of the memory if I could cool them - the memory on the back of the card gets seriously hot.

Does it for more time with each "cycle", just need to keep an eye on it really. It'll work though, no worries.
