Well 4K TV's are going to be very popular in next couple of years

No they aren't. Look how long HDTV has been around, and Sky (and others) still don't broadcast in 1080 a lot of the time.

So what is going to drive the adoption of 4K TVs - which will need a 2nd mortgage for a while yet - when the content on offer is still mostly SD?

Well 4K TV's are going to be very popular in next couple of years and I think people are hoping that the next gen consoles may offer it ,and if they have the same life cycle as currant consoles then 8 years is a long wait so I do think its a valid point people are asking, imo I don't think either console will be powerful enough but I hope I am wrong

They really aren't. We don't really have that many 1080 channels, no 4k standards for a blueray replacement etc, so why would people pay the premium for 4k?

It all depends how long the lifespan is. If its ~7 years again, it's not going to be an issue, most people won't have 4k TVs by then. A few enthuisats yes, but that's not their cash cow demographic.
But I can't see either being powerful enough to run at 4k, unless you turn all other gfx settings to ultra low.

I get what your saying but most people have at least on HDtv even if they are still receiving sd broadcasts, once a major channel starts broadcasting in 4k people will be interested. look how quick Hdtv's have come down in price. 4k will be affordable befor you know it . if X1 or ps4 are able to play media or games in 4k I will certainly be looking at getting one as soon as there affordable

Like they all jumped on to 3D?

Oh wait...

No one cares about 4k (yet).

3d is different tho aint it. trust me once they start broadcasting lets say football in 4k it will get a lot of peoples interest going. i think the cheapest 4k tv are about £5000 grand now, by next xmas they will be under £2000 greand with cheaper brands bringing there own 4k TV's out. it happened with plasma's, lcd's, Blu ray players. bound to happen with 4k to. i remember the first blu ray players on the market were over £1000 and they came down in price very quickly. isn't the bbc looking at broadcasting Wimbledon this year in 4k? sure i heard that somewhere

Most people can't even tell the difference between a bluray and a DVD. I went round my inlaws about a month ago and they were watching cricket on Sky. I asked them why they weren't watching it in HD. They didn't know wtf I was talking about :p

Exactly most people shouldn't care about 4k. You need a stupidly big tv in the lounge to make it work.
Even my lounge tv 37" is to far away to make use of 1080p according to the charts anything above 720p is wasted.

At 9ft I would need an insane sized tv what over 70" to see any benefit and 80-85" to make full benefit.
And that's not even 4k

In any case, there is no chance that either console is able to work with 4K resolutions internally, for gaming. Just not powerful enough. A trip to the GFX sub-forum will tell you that even for 1440p, the kind of GPU power needed to render that is costing you £500 on its own!

Any 4K support on either console will be being upscaled from 1080p. Which kind of defeats the purpose.

4k is very much more suited to very large tv's. If you arent looking at 60" + tv's, then it's a waste of time for all the reasons already mentioned (like the stupid-small distance you'd need to sit from the display if it's anything under 100"). This alone will make it very much a niche product for a good while yet.

I've seen this chart lorded around many times now, any idea on the testing method, sample size and who conducted it?

That's BS. I can tell the difference between content on my 42" TV at 10 and 15 foot away and I'm short sighted.

With my glasses on, it's comical to suggest that the chart is accurate.

THX ranges [edit]

While THX still contends that the optimum viewing distance is a position where the display occupies a 40 degree view angle for the viewer, they too provide a range recommendation. The minimum viewing distance is set to approximate a 40 degree view angle, and the maximum viewing distance is set to approximate 28 degrees.[25]

THX

Screen Size

Recommended Range

35" 3.5' – 5.0' (1.0 – 1.5 m)
40" 4.0' – 6.0' (1.2 – 1.8 m)
50" 5' – 7.5' (1.5 – 2.2 m)
60" 6.0' – 9.0' (1.8 – 2.7 m)
