**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

FWIW from the Xbox One FAQ...

Xbox One and Kinect will provide tools to put you in control of your data. These include:

  • You are in control of what Kinect can see and hear: By design, you will determine how responsive and personalized your Xbox One is to you and your family during setup. The system will navigate you through key privacy options, like automatic or manual sign in, privacy settings, and clear notifications about how data is used. When Xbox One is on and you’re simply having a conversation in your living room, your conversation is not being recorded or uploaded.
  • You are in control of when Kinect sensing is On, Off or Paused: If you don’t want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect. To turn off your Xbox One, just say “Xbox Off.” When the system is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command -- “Xbox On,” and you can even turn that feature off too. Some apps and games may require Kinect functionality to operate, so you’ll need to turn it back on for these experiences.
  • You are in control of your personal data: You can play games or enjoy applications that use data, such as videos, photos, facial expressions, heart rate and more, but this data will not leave your Xbox One without your explicit permission. Here are a few examples of potential future scenarios:
    • A fitness game could measure heart rate data to provide you with improved feedback on your workout, allow you to track your progress, or even measure calories burned.
    • A card game could allow you to bluff your virtual opponent using your facial expressions
  • You can use other inputs to control your games, TV and entertainment experiences: While it’s faster to find what you’re looking for using your voice and gesture commands with Kinect, you can use a controller, your remote controls or your smart devices instead. And you can use all of these devices when Kinect is paused.

What like all the laptops that come with webcams built in...the HORRRRROOORRRRR!!!!!
Quite surprising the amount of hysteria considering pretty much every laptop and smartphone has a camera, microphone and internet link that you can't unplug. *shrug*

Webcams can be disabled, and I don't know about you, but my smartphone generally doesn't sit with the camera lens pointed at me all day.

Past caring about the drm and used games. Really think this is the sad future for consoles and we are stuck with it. Having owned every Sony and MS console (and Nintendo and Sega) I have a preference for the Xbox as I prefer the controller and xbox live, I am leaning towards the Xbox one. BUT if E3 is as poor as the reveal I might reconsider. I don't want to buy both as I have done in previous gens as I don't want to shell out that much money after a pc build only 12 months ago

What you mean EXACTLY the way you can on the Xbox One??? and its only got a lens pointed at you if your sat in front of it. And a mobile has a mic that is with you all the time the phone is so thats even worse surely???

The misinformed hysteria that seems be being spouted about the Xbox One is just ridiculous, seriously think we need a new thread...

But they are clearly wanting to film me and sell the footage on to gay porn sites..........

Kinect doesn't bother me, it's everything else they are doing with the XO.

You can disable the internet on all of those devices.

You can also uninstall the drivers or disable the device for all laptop cameras as well.

So yeah, that's a kind of rubbish comparison.

I don't understand why people are moaning so much about Kinect always on. Just stop watching porn in front of the Xbox jeez.
On a serious note surely you could just cover up the mic if you didn't want it to hear clearly making the sound it picks up all muffled.
For me I'm excited for E3 to see what Microsoft have to offer with games. I always use my Kinect so having it with the console from release is a bonus for me also I don't buy used games and don't share my games.
Connected to the internet every 24 hours sucks as what happens when you move and can't get your internet installed for 2 weeks (like most companies do in the UK). Or you internet breaks and have to wait for an engineer to come out.

I don't know about his laptop, but if my webcam and mic are active there's a little green light on next to it. So I also know when it's on.

Is there something similar on the Kinect? Also even if you turn it "off", they stated it still listens for commands. They claim it's only listening for "Xbox on", but it means it's only going to respond to that command.

You could do but it depends if your network allows tethering and if the Xbox needs to an update of some sort. It could start eating up your data allowance. For me its not a problem but others might have an issue with their network provider.

On the current Kinect there is a red light to say it is off and a green light when its on. Probably be the same on the new version.

You can disable the internet on a Xbox One if you really want to as well as disable the Kinect completely, it's been said multiple times. *shrug*. When was the last time you uninstalled drivers on a smartphone for camera, mic and internet. Are you genuinely saying you uninstall the drivers for your webcam, mic and internet on your laptop every day? Lets not forget mobile operators can track where you, or more accurately you phone is every minute of every day. OMFGWTFTEHALIENSAREBUGGINMEH!!!

If you really think MS are spying on you then just press the special XBOX One don't spy on meh button - it's the white two way switch on the power socket ;)

So yeah, that's a kind of rubbish comment.

I really don't get the drama given we have stuff that uses the same equipment around us every day without a second thought.

That's if you turn the Xbox off with Kinect enabled. As it says in the FAQ a bit further up you can chose to disable the option for it to listen for "xbox on" or indeed disable Kinect completely.

That's a plus at least. I shall have to wait for E3 to see all the real details.

If the kinect truly can be switched off, then why can't it be unplugged?? I suspect there are many caveats in the 'oh you can disable it, or pause it etc'

Question is if you connect via mobile for a couple of mins is that enough for the once every 24hrs check?
