**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

Haha true! Either way, when you think about it $100 is not that much money when the value/entertainment you get out of it for years and years :)
Wonder if Xbox will release a barebones (no kinnect) in the future for $100 less?
Probably not.

Depends who you're talking to, the difference between £350 and £430 or $400/500 is significant. Definitely helped make my mind and can see parents opting for the cheaper one.

Value wise both will be great, at the end of the day both will provide excellent games for years to come. I'm a big gears fan so will probably pick up later on anyway.

Can’t see them launching a SKU without kinnect as has to be connected at all times for the console to function, unless they ditch that idea all together.

I'm trying to decide which console I'm more excited for and having a hard time. Seeing a lot of mentions of the Xbox One having more/better exclusives, but I can't see where? This is the Wikipedia list:

Fantasia: Music Evolved (Not for me)
LocoCycle (Not for me)
Zoo Tycoon (Not for me)
Below (Looks great, loved Sword and Sworcery, but not a console seller)
Crimson Dragon (Not for me)
Dead Rising 3 (Not for me but it's a big win admittedly)
D4 (Not for me)
Forza Motorsport 5 (Yep, all over this)
Halo 5 (Yep, all over this, but it's not out until 6 months to a year after launch)
Killer Instinct (Not for me but a lot of people going crazy over this)
Kinect Sports Rivals (Not for me)
Minecraft: Xbox One Edition (Not for me)
Quantum Break (Yep, all over this, but another 2014 title)
Ryse: Son of Rome (Was on board until I saw QTE galore)
Sunset Overdrive (Maybe, but all they showed was CG)
Titanfall (Yes please)
Project Spark (Could be good, but not my cup of tea)

Now admittedly that's personal preference, but I consider myself a "core gamer". So that's Forza, Halo, Quantum Break and Titanfall that could get me to buy the console. And three of those aren't available at launch. Looking at the PS4 list, I have Infamous, Killzone, Driveclub and Warframe at launch, with The Order: 1886 at some point. I won't list all the other game's I'm not that interested in (Although I could be persuaded by Knack), though the list is equally as long.

Of course I love the look of Battlefield 4, CoD:Ghosts, Watch_Dogs, AC4: Black Flag, Destiny, The Directive, The Crew and can't wait to play them, but they're cross platform.

So from an exclusives standpoint, for me it's a really tough call. Can't decide!

Dude, I'm pretty sure Forza is launching alongside the XBOX ONE. Why do you think they have a pre-order incentive on the console. By pre-ordering the console, you get 4 exclusive car tunes to use on Forza 5. I highly doubt they'd offer that if the game was coming 6 months later.

My money is on both consoles allowing physical media to be bought and sold but not digital downloads (a'la Steam).

Interestingly it seems there may be some back tracking on the Sony no DRM thing. It appears what they meant to say was no DRM/Trade in restrictions on first party games.

They've since said third party publishers are able to use DRM if they want to.

It may need some clarification though I guess. Details at: http://www.theverge.com/2013/6/11/4419566/sony-jack-tretton-publishers-can-choose-to-enforce-drm

Less than 24 hours ago, Sony Computer Entertainment of America president Jack Tretton was met with uproarious applause after revealing that PlayStation 4 disc-based games can be freely given to friends and purchased on the used market. "PlayStation 4 won't impose any new restrictions on used games," were his exact words. One day later, that message is already mired in confusion. During an interview with Game Trailers, Tretton reiterated that Sony's first-party releases won't carry any unordinary DRM restrictions, only to later clarify that third-party publishers like Electronic Arts and Activision are free to chart their own course.
"Well, I mean, we create the platform, we've certainly stated that our first-party games are not going to be doing that, but we welcome publishers and their business models to our platform," he said, according to Polygon. "There's gonna be free-to-play, there's gonna be every potential business model on there, and again, that's up to their relationship with the consumer, what do they think is going to put them in the best fit. We're not going to dictate that, we're gonna give them a platform to publish on."

"The DRM decision is going to have to be answered by the third parties, it's not something we're going to control, or dictate, or mandate, or implement," Tretton said. During last night's keynote, the presentation slide addressing used games didn't differentiate between Sony and its publishing partners, though it did call out disc-based games in particular. It's unclear if Tretton was referring specifically to digital-based downloads, or if in fact EA and other publishers will be able to effectively lock down games that ship on Blu-ray. We've reached out to Sony for comment

In other words, it's the same thing as what we already have.

He said it will be able to play games offline, if that includes third party games then surely it will be just something like an online pass for the MP side of things?

Not sure how you came to that conclusion

Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends.

Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers.

Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers. Microsoft does not receive any compensation as part of this. In addition, third party publishers can enable you to give games to friends. Loaning or renting games won’t be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners

Cause MS said there is no restrictions on their first party games? as have Sony but publishers are free to put restrictions on them? which would make them both the same.

Hmm all games need to be installed and linked to your account, you can "lend" a game once, which becomes perminant. Doesn't sound anything like what Sony said.

I am sure MS said their games would not be under such restrictions, which is what Sony have said, and then it's up to publishers to decide if they want to restrict their games.

If that was the case, why is everyone crowning Sony to have won this gen?

DRM & pricing was made to be a HUGE case last night. The conference was literally 50/50 up to then, then those two big bombshells.

I think when you get past the DRM marketing and look at the facts there's unlikely to be a lot of difference in practice between the consoles. I am pretty convinced both will lock down digital downloads in the same way Steam does however.

*Edit* I think as the choice for DRM on both systems is entirely up to the publisher it's unlikely they would prohibit sales on one console and no the other. MS had said previous to E3 that although lending and rental would not be available at launch they are looking into it. Although I don't think I've ever rented a game I'd prefer no DRM but I don't think it's as big a deal as it sounded now that Sony have said it's not "no drm" it's just no drm on Sony first Party games.

Dunno, we'll see. What is clear is that MS lost the marketing battle despite for me having the better line up of games and exclusives. To be fair I actually quite like the Media/TV stuff as well.

I did chuckle when I saw the PS4 though, after all the stick Xbox One got for being a box, PS4 is a slightly slanted box :)
