**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

I don't see how they couldn't have continued as normal, but have the console revert to '360 style' once 24 hours without Internet connectivity has passed.

All your disc games still work without connectivity as long as the disc is in the drive. Connected? No need to insert the disc!
All your downloaded games stop working unless you are playing on the console they were downloaded to originally.

This wouldn't be a problem as it's likely there won't be an ability to sell digital copies of games anyway. Just like it is now.

It's a shame that they have back tracked. As simple as it is to just get up and stick a disc in the console, not having to would encourage spontaneous game playing.

Still getting Xbox One (and PS4 :p)

Just sounds like spite to me, there's no reason why they couldn't keep this as well as remove the DRM

To play without the disc in would require DRM though, or we could all just share 1 disk :D

Same with the sharing they would need to know you owned those games.

If this pastebin is legit (grain of salt etc), then the share with friends/family feature was going to be pretty restrictive anyway:

What the hell, so basically this family sharing would just have been a demo with a game save that could be transferred to your purchase. Lol.

I can already download demos thanks very much and the game save wouldn't bother me anyway for a demo. Surely that can't be real. So I'm already in a family share, it's called the demo section of Xbox live.

This does make sense, didn't think MS would allow people to share full game with 10 people.
Agree. We'll never know what MS would've allowed but I can't see them or Publishers wanting to give games away for free. I think the people that backed the DRM direction are naive to think they only had the consumers best interests at heart. It all boils down to £££

I have to agree. I think at the very most it would have sat somewhere between a demo and full SP game...

Terrible terrible PR from MS in a complete cluster bomb. Never clear on a single thing from day one, complete arrogance and a middle finger to those who did not like what they heard.

Giantbombcast said something today that rings so true, Sony are in a battle to win people over and are fighting against MS, MS don't even see it as a battle and aren't competing at all and have basically said screw you all until this point. Some of the ideas are/were great like using the 'cloud' to allow AI be taken away from the console but this stuff has not been relayed well at all. A 24hr check in was a terrible idea and not needed. Sony played it smart, they have a lot of the new releases on PSN close if not on the day of release and they know this is the way the things are going so why force other methods of DRM. Allow people to do what they do now and slowly people are moving over to all digital in which this won't even matter one bit.

Giant sweeping statement incoming

i tend to think east asia corporations wanting to play in the global market actually make something they think people want where as many western organisations become arrogant and put out what they want.

One thing im sure not many would argue with is that this has been a shambolic launch and Ms have done more damage to themselves than sony could have ever dreamed of!

EDT: the more i read and more news that comes in (pinch of salt inc) the more i wish i liked the PS4, still some grey areas, how can a company like Ms mess something so important so badly? Damn you Ms and your al4x hand friendly controllers!

Simple thing would be - you share your game with "family" which means you authorise it. As soon as the game is detected on a console/account that wasn't authorised then all previous copies lose the licence and it's passed on.

Like I said, take it with a grain of salt as it's just an anonymous pastebin and for whatever it's worth Arthur Gies of Polygon is saying it's not true. But I do agree that it's hard to believe Microsoft would allow sharing entire games without it being more restrictive than they had talked about so far.

Even if it was true still sharing system was wide open for abuse, wouldn't have lasted long anyway.

I said from the start (well, after E3) that MS had counted on the PS4 being £499 and not being able to play used games. I then said that MS would be holding meetings about scrapping the DRM, and they did. It was only ever going to work if both consoles did it.

The next step will be a price cut. Either a price cut of the existing sku or a version without Kinect. I think £399 with and £329 without and they are straight back in the running.

I think all the stuff to do with Kinect and TV things, they have hit a bit of a wall in terms of graphics that a big chunk of the public will see no improvement in the new consoles, especially with release titles. Obviously no-one in here will think like that but the general public is still the biggest customer.

I'm still buying a PS4 though :)

If they want to sell DL to the general public, then they need to either sell games at £40 retail and £30 DL or they should release a game a week earlier as a DL (wouldn't bother me, but I know lots of people go to lengths to have half a chance of getting a game a day early)

Smart move that would be (bet they won't do it).

As it incentivises people not to buy disc media without clubbing them into submission to force the point.

To be honest I think it will take a bit more than a price cut to win a lot of people back, MS burned a lot of bridges with the DRM issues, perhaps if they announced they were undercutting PS4 on price or they set a lower price point for games, but the majority of 360 gamers I know have lost complete faith in MS most are jumping ship to PS4 a few others are waiting for Steambox or building a PC.
