**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

It'll be interesting to see if my Youview box will work, with how it's integrated with players and such. To be honest I'll be shocked if it ever does.

Well, the Sky mobile app lets you change channels on your box right? Which means it already works over a network.

If that is the case then it could also be an option like with Tivo.

I would think it extremely unlikely though as I don't believe there is an open network remote control standard. They'd have to write separate network remote control software for each box they want to support that have the option.

I suspect it'll be HDMI CEC in which case I don't think any existing set top box will work anywhere.

The question is whether or not they'll also include an IR blaster option too.

I cant see using the Kinects IR blaster having any real delay. It's no different to using your actual remote really.

No I meant that IR technology in general can have a slight delay, it is after all incredibly old technology.

It shouldn't take any longer than changing channel with your remote, I just meant that it's possible it wont be as fast as the launch demo illustrated if they were using HDMI CEC control.

Having done a little more reading it does look like it will all be done via IR as it's the only universal language because no set top boxes support the optional HDMI CEC component. I do wonder whether this means that if a set top box that that does support CEC comes out, whether the One would be able to control it or not.

Edit: Huge disappointment, I didn't know, but apparently in the UK we wont get guide data at launch, it's coming "further down the line". we can still run our set top box through the One but there's no word on whether this means we'll still be able to change channel or not with it or whether we just have to use our normal remote.

That is a problem with the HDMI spec imho. All HDMI devices have to be wired for CEC, but there is no obligation to accept commands, and no standard for the commands if they do accept them. My LG TV can change the volume on my Sony A/V but that is pure coincidence.

Yeah, CEC needs to become mandatory. It'll still take the box manufacturers 10 years to implement it, because it's not in their interests, but it is in our interests, the general consumer.

It's not coincidence most modern TV's, Blu-Ray players and AV receivers all implement the CEC standard and the Xbox One of course. It's just set top boxs that are so far behind because the TV companies don't want to relinquish control obviously.

This is one of the reasons I decided against getting an Xbox One. All the TV stuff they demonstrated was pretty much useless in the UK. Its just a glorified HDMI pass-thru. Yes the Kinect can act as an IR blaster, but how will that work when its not pointing at my TiVo/Sky box/TV.

It just feels like your buying a feature crippled console, waiting for about 5 years for those features to arrive.

By bouncing off the walls, like most modern remotes.

Ok so i got to play a bit of forza and killer instinct. ryse was supposed to be playable but for some reason they couldn't get it going.

The pad looks very similar to the 360, it felt lighter to me but it was plugged in, so that could change when you add the battery pack. The trigger rumble feature added to the feel of the game and the d pad is much improved.

The xbox one is quite large, easily comparable to the very first xbox.

The games looked impressive, forza was fun to play but only one lap and killer instinct was ok as far as fighting games go.

Interesting to see DICE planning to support Smartglass for BF4 allowing map and commander mode on the second screen (iOS, Android or Windows, phones, tablets and PC/Laptops without forcing you to buy a Vita ;) ) with potentially head tracking and voice commands via Kinect. :)

In an interview with Xbox Wire, Battlefield executive producer Patrick Bach said the Swedish developer was investigating Kinect features that "enhance controls", such as head tracking.

"Through SmartGlass, Xbox players will be able to view the overhead map during multiplayer matches and take advantage of the second screen," he said.

"Also, with Kinect, we're looking into features that enhance the controls including peeking and leaning and tracking head movement as well as incorporating voice commands."

While DICE is yet to confirm that Battlefield 4 will support Kinect features at launch, Bach's comments are the strongest indication yet that the game will utilise the camera, which comes bundled with Xbox One, at some point.

Smartglass has much potential that so far hasn't really been used. Second screen could also be good for selecting loadouts / squad info which is a pain to navigate with the controller.

Ps4 also has android and Iso app in the works to rival smart glass thus Not forcing you to buy a vita.
