**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

Oh what a load of hate in this thread.

I'm still fairly open to which I will buy although it will probably be the PS4. All this moaning about unwanted features, well then just don't use them. If you dig deep enough on the internet, you can still find threads (maybe not on here) slating achievements with people saying what do you actually win? nothing? well whats the point? We are gamers, we are gamers! Not many people saying that now is there? And how many people today moan that they don't want a PS move? none.

Technology wise, they've probably hit a bit a bit of a cross roads where, half of their consumers want a faster CPU/GPU/more RAM, and half (millions) where they aren't really that bothered (which is where phones are heading) and they want to entice both sides. TV and sports WILL entice the other crowd.

I've read 2/3 of this thread and many people commenting on 2nd hand games. I'll bet how it will work is, in the same way you get on on-line code with many recent games, XB1 games will have an OFFline code (pretty much like PC) they will sell additional online codes for a price that just about makes 2d hand pointless. Maybe about £11.99

My idea for the when the xbox one gets redesign to be less ugly.. you seen it here first, so I want royalties.. :D - Well the lady did say they wanted it to be the new watercooler.

Ah, interesting point by Gamespot - Xbox One is obviously going to be using DirectX, whereas the PS4 is stuck with OpenGL.

So PC games will be easier to port to/from. Likely resulting in better support from devs.

Now that the dust has settled, some of my thoughts on the unveilings.

Xbox One

Pros

  • The controller looks absolutely phenomenal, possibly the best ever. I just know by looking at it, it’s going to hug my hands. DS4 pales in comparison although I think the touch pad will be useful.
  • Kinect looks much improved, fast and can see it being useful as an addition to normal gaming. (reserve judgement till I see it working live, not the staged stuff we were shown)
  • TV stuff, looks well thought out and functional, again looks useful alongside gaming.
  • Doesn’t look half bad, a bit on the big side but hardly a neg.
Negs

  • No user expandable storage, just external USB storage. My Av stand is already cluttered and not keen on adding other electronics to it.
  • Under powered in comparison to the PS4 with the PS4 having 50% graphical brunt along with a more efficient design and much greater memory bandwidth/capacity.
  • Used games/always online (once every 24hours) and constant Kinect camera watching you. Do not like.
  • Still charging for online play
  • A lot of resources and expense used on the TV/Social side and Kinect which are not primary targets for me as a gamer. Can’t help but feels that has come at the expense of gaming / gaming hardware.

Will I buy at launch? Probably not with exception to what we see at e3. Will I buy ever? Probably yes once it comes down in price (£200ish) and for exclusives like Gears of War, Alan wake 2 ETC

PS4

Pro's

  • Best specs possible within budget (50% more powerful than X), with very little resources wasted elsewhere. I’m paying for what I want.
  • Really like Sony’s ethos, focussed on games and developers
  • Controller a big improvement *
  • Gakai has the potential to be awesome, demos, backwards compatibility
  • Still free online and a improve looking service
  • Headset included and port on pad.
  • Share button looks like it could be pretty cool, knife kill across the map!!
Negs

  • Not really seen any “killer” games yet, but will reserve judgment till E3
  • Whilst controller is improved it feels like its playing catch up with the 360 controller whilst MS have moved on from that.

Will I buy at launch? Probably yes as it speaks to me more as a gamer.

Microsoft are in trouble if most games for the next couple of years are going to be multi platform xbox 360 and PC what reason is there to buy the xbox one if it's exactly the same as the xbox 360 version only with anti aliasing or something on.

Exclusive must play games sell a console.

Technology wise the Kinect looks fairly interesting, but that is literally the only thing I care about.

I think they shall all be on 360 why wouldn't they ? they would still sell loads of latest gears halo forza on 360 also.

OpenGL runs on windows, considering dev's had no problem with the PS4 with a Cell + Nvidia gpu and porting that to Xbox and pc's, OpenGl won't be an issue, there won't be any porting problems I would be almost certain. Infact because OpenGL is more open there is potential they can make it easier to support. The Xbox uses dx11.x(probably), but it will have extensions and will be written to use the edram, optimised for ultra low bandwidth system memory, etc, etc. There is potential for the Xbox games to take more work to run on a PC and normal gpu than the PS4 games would.

In terms of games looking the same on both, they won't because the games will be more in sync with windows release already and have massively more memory so they can go as big as the hardware allows and it would seem that the PS4 gpu is massively more powerful with massively more bandwidth, outside of free 4xmsaa(potentially) that will be on vastly lower quality graphics.

Though its worth noting that if you go from the crappest to the best graphics... every 100% more power has diminishing returns. When you get to a 7870 you're not really talking about adding game physics of features, you're talking about the same textures for the most part and the same feel, its things like higher quality lighting and shadows. Don't get me wrong those things can make a huge difference, but they are power wise extremely expensive for a relatively small difference on screen.

Either way PS4 exclusives WILL use all that extra power, and when some company makes a cross platform game, which way do they want to go, make it look better and higher performance needing on the PC< but not use those features on the PS4 alongside other dev's making the exclusive titles that look much better?

IE long term the Cod guys may have been paid for exclusive content, but in their games 2 years down the line when their rivals are making a shooter that maxes out the PS4 power, are they going to artificially limit the usage of the power so the Xbox version looks the same, while alternative shooters all advertise how much better their game looks than Cod? Nope.

In terms of control pads, I have no problem gaming on a ps3 of 360, better gamepads aren't going to change if I like a console or not, I had no problem with the snes controller, infact I haven't ever hated a controller and no problem with the Nes, though you realise rounded corners and more buttons are great as soon as you got the next console.

TV features, meh, good, bad, who cares, I can buy a £50 arm based stick to do whatever I want with media and tv, or more likely a semi powerful PC for very cheap to stick next to the tv and customise everything I do with no limitations.

Price wise, I think people should realise that HUGE die on the Xbox and huge chunk of edram is making each chip more costly than the PS4's chip, and considering that is the largest single cost in it(most likely) with(at a guess) Kinect being the second biggest cost, I have no reason to think the PS4 should be sold at a large loss nor should cost more than the Xbox One. In hardware terms I would think it will be cheaper than the Xbox.

I've seen loads of sites comment on the cost of the hardware and how high development costs are, but meh, it would seem to me both that the cost was significantly lower than previous gen, due to using an AMD design that from the ground up was made to be HSA compatible and done in blocks so it could be customised. Compared to developing Cell from the ground up...... it should be significantly, massively cheaper to develop.

Considering the technical mega-rants you make on a regular basis, you should know better than most that this "porting" thing doesn't actually happen.

A game is designed on PC and compiled and then optimised and tweaked for each platform specifically.
