**XBOX ONE** Official Thread

Supposing that the second hand market is what rumours suggest, wouldn't that reduce the price of the games at launch?
No, I don't think so. Especially if the consoles themselves are sold at a loss.

With console games, part of the money taken goes to the platform owner (Sony/MS), so the prices are always going to be higher, regardless.

The death (or regulation) of the 2nd hand market could see more Steam-like sales, but I wouldn't expect it to have any effect on launch-day prices.

Hiya darling, so why was rental so big if trading in was common?

Why are you being so abrasive about this ?

To answer your question; you could easily rent a game for a few quid a night and see if you enjoyed it and if you did you could rent it out for a few more nights and likely complete it. It would usually end up cheaper to rent a game for a few quid and complete it during the rental period than pay more for a used copy.

So renting games is still more popular than trade in?

Where did you trade games in pre-EB/Game?

I haven't read the thread, but there seemed to be lots of people moaning across the usual social channels when it was announced. I couldn't see the problem personally, I thought everything about it looked awesome!

Of course not, trends change. Games these days have more replayability in the fact that they have multiplayer, achievements and more secrets in general, not to mention they're usually longer giving them more reason to own them rather than rent for a few days.

Probably GAME, Gamestop and EB Games, they've all been around since the 80s and early nighties.

There were loads of small independent games shops where you could trade in your games. Before the large chain stores came about.

so from what i've read, they will be charging for secondhand games? ok so how is that different from turning up at somewhere like game and buying a pre-owned game? you still have to pay something for that secondhand game right, so what's the difference?

We have 3 xbox's here. kids and one each and I have one. We share games across all three xbox's depending on who wants to play what games. Now if MS are going to be charging to use a game across different profiles, which will mean paying out 4 times, then, depending on what Sony come up with, I may just go the PS4 route for the kids.

The difference is that if you can only buy something in one place, that place can charge whatever the hell it likes.

Whats the difference between a new digital copy and a second hand code to allow a download? Surely the price for a "second hand" game code must be the price of a new one.

Depends what you mean by 'develop more', if we take the simple assumption that each has 50% of the market and the same number of gamers buy the game new; and 'develop more' means platform exclusivity (cant see how else preference to one platform would equate to when its monetisation of used games thats the differential) then thats a hell of load of second hand games that need to be sold (basically every new game sold needs to be resold) to make up the loss of all those new games being sold on the PS4 platform...

I just dont think that is something that developers would stomach, especially as those second hand sales are more than likely to trickle through over a longer period of time too (they could also not be as valuable due to reduced used pricing over time but same thing happens to new games), though on the flip side that means a longer period of time where that game is making them money - guess that depends what KPIs they work to...

ps3ud0

I completely get what your saying but if Microsoft charge a fee for 2nd hand games and sony don't then I can see publishers wanting more xbox focused games as they will make more money in the long run. they will have the initial sale then the fee from the 2nd hand sales which totals to more money. EA have made a big point by being at the launch of the xbox one console and not having a presence at the ps4 launch.
Yes they of coarse will do games for ps4 but am sure they will pump up features on the xbox to make sure that's what people will buy as if they trade it in they will get extra revenue when its resold

this is not something I want to see, but I see the benefits to the games industry by having a fee where they make money

I do think sony will have to adopt this system to keep publishers happy

hope i'm wrong though

When a game's traded in at one of the bigger retailers...Game for example what will happen is they can run something through a system supplied by Microsoft.

This will allow them to remove the registration the game currently has (original owner can't continue to play) allowing it to then be sold on at a Pre-Owned price with essentially a 'First Time' registration so there would be no additional cost applied upon installation.

For me this is the exact reason that 'Always online' will happen however I suspect this will be something of a must log in every 24 hourse to remove the situation where someone can keep a game installed after trading in and continue to play until they go back online with the console again.

Glad I jumped back to PC gaming last year!

What a joke with the new Xbox. It's a shame really, I like the Xbox controller.

Thankfully they won't charge to use that on the PC...

A lot of people will avoid Xbone in that case and Sony's platform will get more sales, the second hand market is going to be tiny if you don't sell many games.

Plus the EU will probably have something to say about the steady erosion of consumer rights.
