good choice mate, I have the v2 and 700’s, both nice with usb C and so so comfy. Now all I need to do is the Dolby Atmos, I hear great things from it.. (no pun intended).

Definitely worth it, the app is a one off purchase. The bass is fantastic with the headset - now that I have Netflix, Disney etc on the Xbox I can watch them on there and listen through the headphones. Since they also connect via Bluetooth to my phone I can also take phone calls or listen to music while I game, it’s a fantastic setup.

It was only last night that it suddenly dawned on me why this controller is so comfortable. I hadn’t noticed that the curve of the main body of the controller continues onto the triggers. It makes the whole thing really comfortable. The texture is great too.

Why are you not joining us for Halo online?

silly question, but how do I go about setting up Atmos for my console / headset mate?

Watched a youtube video from a hdtv reviewer, I may post link later.

But learnt the xbox uses 8 bit colours by default (s configurable, but bear in mind bandwidth usage), and about how it handles chroma subsampling, plus the rgb colour range option as well.

bandwidth calculator here. https://www.extron.com/product/videotools.aspx

As far as I know high refresh monitors all use reduced blanking vesa timings.

Not sure though, but if they do, then 4k @ 60hz with 10 bit colours and 4:4:4 is bang on 18gbit second, hdmi 2.0 limit.

That's not true, mine defaulted to 10 bit 4:4:4 on my TV.

How are the Series S owners finding it?
I'm thinking about a bedroom console and wonder of that's a good buy based on the small size.
It's that or use XCloud (or Stadia) as I don't want anything large in there.

I have both and really like my S for my 1440p120 PC monitor in my office.

The two biggest disadvantages are 364GB of usable storage, and some games such as Jedi Fallen Order using the clearly inferior One S version of the game instead of the One X version. The Series S can easily handle the One X version of the game but the developers haven't made a patch available and are very unlikely to.

Yeh it seems those problems are linked. Use the One S version to reduce file size so the paltry hard drive space isn't an issue.

TBH I'm not too worried about the small size as it will be secondary to my main setup on another room - PS5, PC and One X (Series X in a year or so).
I imagine it has to be a better experience than streaming though.

Really liking it tbh, game pass is a massive reason for that as well though.

Small storage isn't too much of a problem if you use an external drive for the Xbox one/older games.

I do use it as a secondary consol as PS5 is my main machine.

Streaming just doesn’t work for FPS games, even with my 10Gb connection you can feel the input lag.

Regarding the Series S it’s a shame more games didn’t use dynamic scaling, particularly on performance modes, as the textures are fine it’s just the 30 FPS and 900p frame caps that cause poor performance.

That is interesting to know, I think it is bandwidth related?

Turns out the blanking timers are not used, so e.g. on my screen 4k60 output can only do 8bit colours at 4:4:4 the bandwidth isnt there.

The hdtv reviewer used a LG CX I think and his defaulted to 8bit.

I believe if you use 10bit on a hdmi 2.0 signal when using 4k60, you will drop to 4:2:0. Sadly it seems only tv's can display the subsampling in use? So I cannot confirm if mine was doing that but based on the bandwidth calculator and the hdtv guy findings, I dropped it back to 8 bit as 4:4:4 8bit will be preferable to 4:2:0 10bit. On hdmi 2.0 though anything below 4k, should be good to go on 10bit. He also tried to get 10bit 4:2:2 to work using the 4:2:2 option, but the option forced 8bit.

Video is here.

If I ever put my console directly connected to the monitor then I will change to 1440p on the console, and 10bit, but now I have got used to using my capture device it is probably there to stay. The device doesnt support 1440p, elgato seem to be like sony where only tv resolutions matter.

It really is a non issue, I have 20+ games downloaded, 20 gig lost to dev mode, and still have 200 gig free on my internal storage.

The issue is people been stuck in a mindset where they want their entire game collection ready to go on inclusive storage.

The X isnt exactly a gulf in storage capacity its only double, not like its 4x-10x the capacity.

For me its absolutely fine and am very happy with my purchase, my complaint is really the controller been of poor quality. Vesperia runs better than on my ps4 pro for reference. The zen2 really showing its class vs the mobile jaguar cpu. Vesperia load times also match my pc, again much better than ps4 pro. The value is extremely good in my opinion. What you getting for £250 in todays market is a minor miracle.

It is slightly less width than my xbox360 slim, but the depth is noticeably less (doesnt go back as far).

Also my cabling is much tidier now, previously I had a bulky power cable at back of the 360, a bulky vga cable, which also had sound cable split offs to feed sound to PC, all this is out of my spider web of cables now.

This 100%, I mean seriously how many games are people really playing that often, and with external available as cold storage just switch in and out as required if you're that bothered.

Personally I'm fine with the size for this price, better this than a higher base price as £449 is already a lot of money for the SX but the SS for £249 is a bargain.

You know that people play different games, right?

Halo 5 and CoD together take up over 220 GB so if you have friends and like to play more than one game for multiplayer then that eats up a lot of your storage.

That leaves you with enough space for 1-2 single player AAA games at 60-80 GB each. I don’t think wanting more than 3 of your favourite games installed is asking for too much.

And this is only factoring previous generation games with low resolution assets, it’s going to be worse as current generation games become the norm.
