XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

Long shot - has anyone tried running this on a 'modest' spec laptop?. I've got a little Dell XPS M1530 here with a C2D T7250 CPU and an 8600GT GPU with 4Gb RAM. Just wondering if that would run it at a modest resolution ok?.

My bank balance is terrible, I have researche laser weapons but do not have enough engineers or funds to build them.

Hi Draeger, my laptop is a 2.8Ghz P9700 C2D, 4GB Ram, and a GTX260M. Although most of the options are down, it looks fine, plays at native 1680x1050 and runs smooth as silk. :)

Thanks for the info, I'll give it a whirl and see how it runs. My missus is going to hate it if the laptop actually runs it ok. :D
 
Research priorities - do I need to take these straight away, or will I suffer if I leave them for a while? I've been taking them almost straight away but have a feeling that it's progressing the storyline too quickly and my lack of other research is going to hinder me...
 
Don't need to do them right away, they are basically the precursor to the main story line.

I've been waiting for nearly 3 months (in game) before assaulting the first base, now my squad are all decked out in titan/archangel armour and have plasma weapons. sectopods drop in 2 shots :)
 
Also found is vital to reasrch corpses and intoragations as priority, get upgrades to reserch in founder and more importantly research points, which drastically cut research time.
 
First XCOM game ever for me (never had a PC growing up until well after XCOM, so never played it), but I jumped straight in on Classic Ironman.

Things aren't looking too bleak, thus far. It's not going well, I mean, China, India and France are threatening to leave the Council, I'm almost broke, and I can't find the engineers to make laser rifles, but I'm alive. I didn't think I would be by this point.

I just lost my corporal. My highest ranking soldier. So, Dutch, if you need any more names, could you honour the memory of Mark "Clean Shirt" Corrigan? :D

I'm naming my guys after characters from comedy shows. Because my campaign is going laughably bad, probably... :D

Snow nuts is just a direct copy with little added on. Xcom bring its upto date, it just needs a few teaks.

Anyway game crashed (first time, just froze on alien activity) just as I was doing really well on a mission, back to the start :(

Xcom brings things up-to-date but it also dumbs a lot of features down ie:Removes a lot of things that would made this game even better if they would have included them,i think they will both be good tbh.

The one thing that really annoys me with the new game is the Interceptor/ufo battle,talk about being on rails,you cant do anything apart from watch unlike the original.

They may bring out Terror from the deep as a brand game/dlc;)
 
Still 1 hour 25 until it unlocks :( It's times like these that I need to pick up a few pick up and play time wasters the next time there is a steam sale.
 
Well, that campaign met with defeat.

I must have got lucky with my first campaign, this one proved fruitless. On the abduction mission selection screen, you generally have to go with the country that has the highest panic state or risk losing them from the council.

First time around I got lucky and they were generally the country that would reward what I was after (ie $200, 4 scientists etc). This time around the country I needed to go to would offer me a soldier, useless!

Ah well, back to the drawing board...
 
It seems to be unlocking now.

Took me about 20 min to unpack the 12gb file. My PC is showing it's age :(
