XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

Anyone played/playing on impossible at the moment? I have finished on classic ironman and it wasn't so bad once you have some vetted soldiers on your side. Wondering if its still balanced enough to be winnable?

I haven't tried it yet (still having fun on C/I), but I've heard it requires a substantial change of tactics. There are also complaints that the maps are too small for the quantities of Aliens that spawn on I/I.

not sure if that was asked earlier, but I have few soldiers 'on mission' while they are not...anyone knows why is that ?? Cant use my top guys because of that :/

Sounds like a bug - can you reload the game and see if that makes a difference? (Obviously disregard if you are playing iron man mode). Maybe try putting them into PSI training, them pulling them out again straight away?

Thats all I can think of, for now.

AAAARGH! I had everything set up for capturing one of those crystal guys, positioned everyone perfectly then sent my guy in to the tile next to it, but it had full health of 8 so I only had a 30% chance.....so I had one of my other guys take a shot at him with a laser rifle which does 4 damage hoping to bring him down a bit.....of course it is a critical hit and it kills it:mad: Gonna have to wait for the next one now

Save your crappy pistols for that :p

I have a worse one...was trying to capture a floater for the early armor research
bonus, and thanks to a low dmg pistol I successfully whittled one down to 1hp for a 90% chance to stun. Stun failed of course. Oh well I thought, it happens.

Only it happened again - on the very next mission!!!

Nooooo1 I just got a whole squad killed, including 3 top ranks fitted out with the absolute best gear I could get. It was the mission after assaulting the alien base, and the first time I have seen a large mech type enemy and it just obliterated me:( ....I had my top man going round stabilizing everyone but he got killed too:(.

That thing is an absolute pain. I was very lucky indeed the first time I came across it. I generally keep all my rockets and grenades for such an encounter.

Anyone know how I can get the plasma rocket launder?

reloading doesnt help, same goes for sending in to PSI ;/

I wouldn't try I/I for several patches yet. For a start you'll get too many HP on your soldiers, then you'll have to put up with all the warp bugs which are more frequent on Impossible.

Then there's bugs like Sectopods being immune to rockets (at random), flanking not always working, LOS not always working...

C/I was hard to start but easy after 4 months. I/I was just brutal and I didn't get past the first month. Tried twice :p

I keep finding the sectopods are getting no damage at all. Ive tried pistols, launcers and grenades all have no effect on the sectopod. More than once ive had to restart the mission

Heavies with the HEAT perk tear up Cyberdiscs and Sectopods. Never tried anything else on them, tbh.

I never got to use one in my game :p

I believe you need to take down and assault a Battleship class UFO. I got fusion reactor research from doing so but finished the game shortly after and didn't get a chance to use it

Change the characters names to , Ken Levine - Otto zander - Joe Kelly - Sid Meier if you guys are really stuck. Ive not used these but i know someone that has

Should probably progress the story along at some point.

Yeah it is tricky to know how quickly to progress it really. I keep wondering if I am leaving too long between the proper 'story' missions. I don't know what it does to enemy scaling(if anything)?

I don't have much choice anyway atm, as my whole squad was wiped out about 5 missions ago, then on the next one, all but two were killed, and in the last one I lost one that was with me from the start:(.....difficulty really seems to have hiked up since assaulting the alien base!

Nearly lost all of my squad earlier when taking on a downed battleship. Most are out of action for a good few days, highlighting the need for a squad B.

I have done pretty well with mixing it up so far, so even though I have lost lots of experienced soldiers in the last 5-6 missions, I still have quite a few highish ranks available. Also just built the Psi-lab, so will see how that changes things. I have also done a few missions where you get a new recruit as a reward

Activating any of these 'hero' characters will put an end to receiving any more Achievements in that game play through - in case that's undesirable.

Quick guide here for how to get Plasma weapons ASAP in the game. This is what you need:

  • Alien Containment Facility
  • Arc Thrower
  • Research Weapon Fragments
  • Capture a Sectoid for a Plasma Pistol
  • Capture a Thin Man for a Light Plasma Rifle
  • Capture a Floater/Muton for a Plasma Rifle
  • Research Plasma Pistol/Light Plasma Rifle/Plasma Rifle etc to actually be able to use them (and build your own).

Each time you capture these units as well you get their weapon, so if you can, you should really try to stun floaters/mutons as soon as they start arriving.

Got the hang of the sectopods now. Plasma sniper rifle with double tap sorts them out pretty quickly, especially if your sniper has the perk for being able to hit enemies in allies line of sight. I just send a SHIV in and keep everyone else back so the SHIV takes the hits and my sniper takes it out
