XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

Got the hang of the sectopods now. Plasma sniper rifle with double tap sorts them out pretty quickly, especially if your sniper has the perk for being able to hit enemies in allies line of sight. I just send a SHIV in and keep everyone else back so the SHIV takes the hits and my sniper takes it out

Sound as a good idea.

How do you guys deal with mass panic in your "army" that may happen sometimes? How to increase their will?

Ouch!! RIP the A-team, 3 Colonels and 3 Captains gone in one calamitous mission lol...

3 Officers left to guide the rookies past cyberdisks and sectopods, this should be interesting!! :p

Early on you cant really - only way is the Officer Academy upgrade Iron Will, which provides will boosts every time you soldiers get promoted. Unfortunately it does not retroactively apply to your existing troops.

Late on you can get a PSI shield item that raises will by 20 or 30, but at that point in the game your soldiers dont tend to panic unless you make a massive mistake!

the only option open to me is reload! I can't move or use any other ability with any of my troops! anyone else come up with this bug?

this has happened a lot and pretty much ruined my run in this game and looks like a restart is on the cards but kind of off putting knowing this game breaking bug is there.

Nearly lost all of my squad earlier when taking on a downed battleship. Most are out of action for a good few days, highlighting the need for a squad B.

I've just got used to being tactically flexible. It's rare I'll have most of my squad down but I've gone missions with my top 5 either sick or doing the "special training". Give the new guy(s) a decent weapon and armour and don't expect them to make squad saving uber shots (so play suitably in a suitably cautious manner) and things aren't generally too bad.

I have a couple of supports in the best of the light armours (they're rather "spirited", ahem) go in as spotters on the big UFO's, use most/all the uses of the special from the armour so I can get everyone in suitable places outside to provide maximum crossfire then trigger the packs and sprint out into the spots I saved for them. Overwatch and massed fire takes down most of what jumps me. I leave a couple of bits of cover near the exits for the computer to park them in so they don't fall back into the UFO and if needed charge the assaults in to mop up, back off, reset and go bait some more :D

Playing a bait and hook tactic on larger UFO's saves a LOT of pain.

I usually play 2x assault with the full plasma's (they get a LOT of early use with the shotgun based weapons until their aim is GOOD) 2x support with light plasmas sat a little further back (so the aim bonus keeps them accurate) 1 sniper with double tap + move&fire and a heavy sat doing little other than suppression fire or blowing away packs of em (double rocket talent). I tend to keep a guy with the "special training" around to "take back" any guys the "boss dudes" "mess with" ;) (trying to not be too spoilery there)

Argghh, loving this game, but just been hit by a bug that means I need to start again. Sent an interceptor to chase down a UFO, but got a council request for a rescue mission while it was chasing. It was close by and the Skyranger got there before the interceptor reached the UFO, so did the rescue mission and now the screen reverts back to the globe and gets stuck. No Skyranger, no interceptor and no UFO, can't even Escape out. As it was an Ironman game, when I close the game down and reload it, I am back in the last step of the rescue mission and the same happens again.
It's a known bug, but not yet patched, so I guess I'm starting again. Not gonna play Ironman this time though as I want a few back-up saves in case this happens again.
SO annoying as I'm loving this game. and had a couple of squads levelled up with friends names.

There was a rock, paper, shotgun article saying that a patch is due out soon, and this is one of the issues they mentioned fixing, along with a few others. No idea on the actual release date though.

Thanks for that MisterPK. At least I'll be able to come back to that save game at some point. Now the question is, do I make my new game a Classic or another Normal game (non-Ironman until all bugs are fixed)?

Just missed a 95% to hit shot followed by an 98% to hit shot, my jaw just about hit the floor on the second one

Any ears to the ground about further content?

The game has been declared a "commercial success", so they are bound to release some more DLC other than what has been announced already.

*****SPOILER WARNING******
On my latest play through I've been trying to assemble a full squad of Psi troopers but the allocation system seems very random, the game tells you at one point that troops with high will power are more likely to have the gift but it does not seem to make much difference from what I've seen, I tried leveling up after buying the perk in the officer training school that gives a boost to will at every level, I thought it would increase the chance but after leveling a whole squad of six from sqd. to col. not one with the gift, yet I put in first rank squadies & got two gifted WTF.

Stupid question - I take it that it isn't possible to 'stun' a Sectopod and return to base with a 'live' one?. I'm assuming they are similar to other non-organic enemies like the Cyberdisc and that anything remotely robot/droid like cannot be retrieved for research?.

Slight spoiler if you haven't played the game (about a certain type of mission):

Where is the evac zone for the bomb disposal missions? I was about fifteen missions into my first game when I got one. Unfortunately I didn't manage to defuse the bomb so was ordered to move to the evac zone. I just assumed this was where I was dropped in but when I got back they didn't board the ship when stood outside it and consequently all died. That pretty much raped me and I was playing on ironman so had to start a new game. I don't mind, it's a great game, but would like to know a bit more about these disposal missions.

You can't capture live sectopods, chrysalids, drones or cyberdiscs.

Good News - The patch yesterday fixed the bug in my Ironman game and I can now carry on with it!!!
Bad news - The very next mission my best sniper (48 kills from 20 missions) was killed by a very sneaky Alien. I'm gutted.

OK Warspace is absolutely essential! ....I accidentally downloaded the patch yesterday, then next mission my best soldier was killed from right across the map by 2 Thin Men....he was wearing Titan Armour with Chitin Plating as well!

Then my sniper has 60% chance to hit someone 5 tiles away:rolleyes:

Yup, Classic Ironman is too bruising for me without Warspace, tbh.

A difficulty setting between Normal and Classic would be my sweet-spot I guess.

Thin men are so freaking dangerous, even late game. Their aim is insane, and their crits can really hurt.

I actually agree with the Sniper rifle getting penalised for ranges that are too close. It makes sense to me, its a large unwieldy weapon. That change is one of the reasons I havent tried the warpsace mod yet. (Although I like some of the other stuff in that mod).

I agree, close range sniper should suffer a penalty, they one shot most stuff at range, close range too would be a bit unbalanced.

Currently doing as above, levelling some new troops with the will bonus in prep for the psi team.

I've not looked at any mods yet
