XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

Thats a restart surely?!? Can't lose the big man in a campaign like this! :D

"GED TO DE CHOPPA" lol

RIP Dutch. XCOM got you pushin too many pencils. Maybe Dillan and Mac can get a little payback...

It's ok we got Ellen ripely, dave lister(red dwarf has done him proud, he's my highest ranking officer), jack reacher and Sean Dillion on the mission now.

I'll have to recreate my uber soldier from my amiga 1200 days of UFO:Enemy Unknown & remake the good old CPU generated "Jane Reynolds - crack-shot extreme"

I must have played through the original a few times, terror from the deep, apocalypse, after-light/after-shock/after-math/UFO Extraterrestrials more times than I can remember.

I dread to think of the amount of hours I've put into this franchise.

Never played this. Know nothing about it. But I see the name Firaxis and I'm excited.

Is it anything like Civ? Some sort of 4x game in space?

A mixture of turn based strategy, with research, development, base building (on a the main main like civ5(ish).

It's like the total war series in that the combat is in a different scene to the resource management side - it's an excellent genre & if you like the 4x games/Civ you should enjoy this.

I'm playing on normal and it seems pretty easy - I don't think the cryssalids even hit me... the starting guns seems to kill everything with one shot...

The original was miles better.... but this seems a reasonably good effort at bringing it up to date!

I'm on Normal and Chrysalids definitely take 2-3 hits (maybe 2 criticals at best case) to take down using the standard rifles. Absolute slaughter, and I'm totally failing to catch an alien alive in what I think is a decent time frame before the bigger units start to come in.

Really enjoying this so far, and definitely happy that I preordered.

Are all the player controlled units in this humans? I remember in the original games it was possible to get a tank (that took up 4 times the size of humans in the transport craft) that was somewhat useful in certain situations, and later on when you have much more powerful weapons to use on missions the tanks could still be used to defend your base if it came under attack.

First mission with chrysalis or whatever hey are and my entire team wiped out.

Think I need to restart on concentrate on weapons and amour.

I would strongly recommend classic ironman, its quite tough, only just got some laser rifles and the first bit of armor, so my troops are fairing a little better.

Can't say the same for the civilians on the last terror mission though. Poor old Japs. :(

For people umm-ing and ah-ing over vpn'ing to get US steam. I have been suspended in the past for doing this. It only took a steam ticket to sort it out and all they said was 'don't use a vpn' but my account was locked out for 4 days or so whilst it was handled.

edit: I might do it again for xcom anyway :D

I've seen the robot tanks in the new game in a number of different videos, they're called Shivs IIRC...
