XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

Crashes seem to have stopped for me now, so I have managed to get in some real playtime. Really getting in to it now.

One thing I would have liked different is a tweak to members leaving the XCOM project. Maybe it could be easier to keep them, or you could get them back or something. 3 have left in my current game and I feel like there was pretty much nothing I could do really. Also a few build-times should probably be a little shorter too imo.

Downloaded the Warspace mod on the recommendation of several users of the official forums to give it a shot; only played a few missions with it so far but from the mod notes I read it seems like it should change the experience for the better.

Agreed, my classic ironman game is much better. Aliens have to flank you properly instead of making 'wondershots' across the map.

....just lost my entire squad. I feel gutted!

My chinese sniper who I started with and had 22 mission, 38 kills.....gone.

I will have to try that mod, as it was just silly really.

I was expecting him to tear into the game for its numerous and various bugs and glitches.
I've only experienced one bug really & that is the one with troops facing the wrong direction to shoot, other than that my only real issue with the game is the difficulty selecting a position on a higher or lower level but it's not a game breaker, by today's standards I'd say the game was pretty good on the bugs/glitches front.

I've now completed the game twice & am just about to finish a third play through on Classic Ironman, I loved the original but I prefer this version. Firaxis has improved on the old formula in almost all respects IMO, sure there are aspects I miss but I understand why most of the discussions to remove stuff were made, I definitely don't miss time units or endlessly searching for the last ET who is hiding in the corner of the map.

Really enjoying this so far I think I've pushed my squads a little too far lol.
I've not gone into the alien base assault yet but am out of research and foundry projects.
Entire "main" grouop kitted in titan armor/archangel all with max level plasms weaponry.

Also just got the what appears to be plasma rocket launcher thing! Not used it yet tho.

I'm taking my main charson the harder missions and trying to use fresh rookies for the crashes adn stuff to get them levelled. I normally send in my real sniper with them tho as the archangel armor and the plasma sniper rifle with enhanced S.C.O.P.E and elevation bonus/party sight and double tap seems to destroy most things.

Still not managed to arc a cyberdisc or droid thingy tho.

whats these mods about then?

Theres a plasma rocket launcher?

I havent found that yet. So far my favourite 'special' weapon is the Alloy Cannon. Kills anyone including those exopod mech things in one move (if you use "Shoot Twice" and get 2 critical hits.

Yeah, you only get it if you successfully intercept a "battleship" UFO (and complete the ensuing mission at the crash site), which dont appear until late in the game, like August/Sept I think.

In the upcoming DLC "Slingshot" they are going to make it available earlier. (Should be in a patch imo).

Just seems so odd you upgrade every other weapon except that one for a really long time, if you even see a battleship, which is by no means guaranteed.

Thats the one, you find a fusion reactor in the map and then I think there was 2 research programs from it. All the materials used up already just crafting teh one bloody thing lol :(

The plasma rocket launcher is game changing, can make two out of the materials, make it soo much easier as it is a homing missile

I did not expect to find this thread on 3rd page!!! I thought that there will be bigger interest.

Are there any interesting mods for the game available?

This genre isnt what it used to be in terms of popularity, which is a shame!

I havent personally tried any mods yet, but there are about 5 at the XCOM nexus website which make some adjustments to the gameplay.

Of those that have been completed, I havent seen one which makes changes that I completely agree with, so I havent installed any. I may do when Ive played the vanilla game a bit more.

Some simple to use mod tools would be nice, something along the lines of Shadowkeeper (for Baldurs Gate 2). Im hoping for something like that for XCOM in the future.
