XCOM : Enemy Unknown - by Firaxis Games - Thread

Great game for passing time this. Especially if you're bothered enough to rename your squad members to mates. You grow quite attached to them. I'm about 3/4 of the way through it but looking forward to the expansion. Mechs FTW!

Shame their transition to 3rd person wasn't very well received...

I looked at the clock last night and it was 1:30AM... I had to be up at 6:45am!

I've come across some bugs with overwatch, sometimes it'll freeze on alien activity. :( For this reason I tend to save regularly and rotate between them in case I get stuck.

It's nice to see game mechanics working how I'd imagined them. The whole "leapfrog" tactic with one squadmember keeping watch/covering really works well. :D

Only thing I've messed up is I was a bit slow off the mark getting more satellites up. Oops. Still managed 2 A grades so far.

It's a great game :) Gets much more difficult in the late-game though.

Most people find it gets easier as you get towards the end-game.

Beginning is super rough. Men dying left, right and centre. But as you tech up your men get a lot hardier, and in the end you only lost men through carelessness, or (frustrating common at release) game-breaking bugs.

Certain units it introduces cause massive spikes in difficulty I found. The first time you find the (4 legged insects, completely forgot the name) in that Terror mission... holy crap. Not that they get much easier as the game progresses. The other notable one is when Mind control suddenly gets introduced and it can REALLY mess up your day.

But yeah, in general I found it got easier as I progressed.

This game sucks you in. Unlike WOT where I can pop in for half an hour and out I found myself playing this till the early hours.

The only thing that really narked me was that wherever you went on a mission the locations were all the same.

eg yellow taxi's in London !!

Sacrilege.

I've read previews of the expansion and the feedback is very good. Cant wait.

One of the biggest problems with the game was lack of map variety.

And the bizarre decision to make the maps *less* varied as you progress.

By the end game, all missions take place in the "forest" map. You literally end up repeating the same mission over, and over, and over, until you decide enough is enough and do the final mission.

I never really suffered from a lack of variety tbh. Even if the map is the same, it never plays out the same way, so I never really noticed.... The only annoying one I did find, was the one where you have to save a diplomat or whatever, and it is two sidewalks with the road sunk down in the middle with lots of cars. A good map, but not enough tactical variety to want to play it more than a few times.

Really enjoying this game but I don't think I've played one as buggy as this. Feels like a new release in need of several patches. I have to save the game mid game just keeping in mind there's a good chance of me losing a soldier due to some glitch.

I completed the original on the amiga and this was on steam weekend free play recently, its as good as ever and the graphics help add to what is a basic but very good gameplay. Also online multiplay works well :)

Also turn based game is useful for slipping in a game when you are supposed to be doing something else, easy to switch out of for 5 mins and back in

yea earlier had the game freeze after I took my turn and another time returning to the world globe it just froze.

not as in the game stopped responding it just wouldn't move on no matter how much I pounded on my keyboard

Just installed this, it seems to bug out a lot.

It appears you can press the wrong combination of buttons while taking a turn that prevents any sort of advancement onto the next move. If you are lucky and the menu can still be accessed then a reload can be done.

The expansion has international voices.

So your Russians will go "Da" when you select them.

This makes it a deal for me.
