Xenoblade Chronicles

This game makes me wanna get my Wii sorted out - picked up an ex display model dirt cheap, but it hasn't got the motion sensor bar or any of the cables with it, so I need to get round to sorting them out. Game looks perfect for me :)

Finished it, great game, one of the best games I’ve played in the last few years.

reports are 90 hours to complete, doing ZERO sidequests

I would say it takes about 70-75 hours with no side quests, that said I don’t think you will be able to complete the game with out doing some quest just to level you up a bit.

But that’s one of the thing I like about this game it didn’t have any stupid jumps in difficulty like most JRPGS do, just to extend the play time.

Yes for the 2nd part, some of the special creatures also drop them and for the 3rd part only special monsters drop them.

Just found my first overpowered enemy. It's after the Valak Mountains (won't say where to avoid spoilers), there's an area called 'gate 3' that it marches down. The damn thing is giant and several levels above me. I managed to get it down to 70% health on my best attempt before it wiped me. It has an AOE attack that only my Tank can survive (or Dunban as he dodges it most of the time) but my healer and DPS always get wiped. After that it's just a matter of time before he grinds me down.

Going to carry on for a bit and come back for him, but this is certainly the first time i've been completely unable to take on a named monster as soon as i encountered him. Fortunately he's completely optional so i can't criticise the game as such.

Loving this game, such a shame that titles like this weren't released earlier in the Wii's life. Mine has been sat in its box for over a year until this came out!

Spoiler:

If I remember right its 2 bosses, the monado cant hurt one of them but you need it to cast purge to remove the creatures aura so you can hit it.

Also I'm sure I had to level up to defeat it.

Thats the one,I'm doing the aura thing but my characters always seem to die :( no matter what

Im at agniratha and just saw the cutscene about what happened with the bionis and mechonis

so let me get this straight, zanza is the bionis and meyneth is the mechonis, so there was life on both titans before they fought? I thought the game stated life developed on bionis after the titans died? dont quite get it, these things were bowling around with people living on them?

Yeah, the chief of the Mechonis village on Mechonis' arm said that he was alive when they fought. I guess they just move so slowly it doesn't affect them, however when they fought the chief also said millions died, i'm assuming the rapid movements needed to fight killed the vast majority of the population. I mean, for example, there's only a handful of 'true' Mechonis inhabitants left due to their slow reproductive cycle, the Bionis inhabitants reproduced much more quickly so repopulated after the titans 'froze'. At the end of the day it just comes down to a form of chinese whispers, hundreds of generations have passed on Bionis since the battle, so the story got mixed up over time as it was passed on, on Mechonis however the inhabitants remember the real story as they were actually there.

Just got to Agniratha, guessing I am on the home straight now?! About 75 hours racked up and done about 80% of the side quests so far although I need to revisit some areas as I imagine there are some more waiting for me.

Haven't enjoyed a game this much in a long time and the concept and story are both very well handled. One thing that would be useful is some form of auto-equip (for attack, defence, ether, etc), it gets a bit dull having to keep rejigging weapons/gems especially when you collect so many of them if you do the side quests. I often feel I could have a better setup but can't be bothered going through all of the gems.

Quick question, other than Colony 6 is there anything else that costs a LOT of money? I've got about 3 million and not finding much to spend it on so far because the side quest loot is better than 90% of what you can buy.

My poor missus! :) I suspected there might be some chunky side quests as I've found a few High Entia doors that I can't open and have a couple of other quests I did that seemed like part of a set. They sure did cram in a lot of content!!

Well after a few really busy weeks at work I'm back on this!

Just defeated the telethia in makna forest :D

Streeteh what was you party set up? And i seem to be getting my ass kicked by the named monsters even though I'm 5+ levels above them.

What am I doing wrong? :p

At that point my 'go to' group was Reyn, Sharla and Shulk. Later in the game things open up as characters become stronger. Reyn was all about drawing aggro, Sharla was healer and Shulk had to stand back and just keep building team attack/monado gauge using a suitable combo of normal and well placed side/back attack specials. The monado is essential for named monsters in order to survive special abilities and to keep 'speed' cast on Reyn to lower the overall damage he takes.

After some levelling Riki actually becomes a powerhouse, capable of stupid amounts of dps if you load him up with flame/freeze/poison/bleed attacks, he also has an excellent group healing ability and a huge amount of HP. Eventually i replaced Sharla with him.

Soon after the point you're at i replaced Reyn with Dunban. The reason i only did this after some time is that you need enough agility gems; when you give Dunban the max agility bonus (+50) using gems he's near untouchable. This means that the lowered healing output of your party by losing Sharla, an excellent healer (but rubbish at attacking) and replacing with the damage dealing but 'ok' healer Riki is offset by the fact that Dunban rarely takes damage. Basically Reyn used to need healing ALL the time, so i needed Sharla to keep him going, with Dunban it means less healing is needed so Riki could step in.

Much, much later in the game i then replaced Dunban with another character who didn't have quite as good agility as Dunban but deals more damage and can heal a bit too. I'm not going to say too much detail though as you haven't met that character yet :D

My dream team at the end of the game (beat it first time easily i must add!) was Shulk, Riki and the mystery character. They are epic together. Shulks Monado abilities are essential for any powerful character, Riki deals silly amounts of debuff damage and the third character had good evasion and good DPS to act as a 'tank'.

I never really got along with Melia, poor girl, though she is useful against Telethia.
