XFX 780i SLI

You get it with the mobo mate :)

picture?

afaik, there are only 2 sli bridges. 8cm, and 12cm. 8cm will connect slots 1 and 2, and the 12cm will connect slots 1 and 3

HOWEVER the 12cm is not long enough to go from slots 1 to 3 AND to go over the accelero S1 cooler.

maybe there is this 3rd sli bridge i havent seen, hopefully.

im currently waiting on a 780i from evga, as part of their upgrade program. im currently 157th on the list, but from what ive read on the evga board some old 680i problems have been carried over to the 780i, eg rubbish cooling paste on the north and south bridge chipsets, once again the customer has to finish the product:confused:

Nice write up damfoose. I'm considering going for a 780i (either striker II or reference) so any updates you can give us would be greatly appreciated. I have scoured the net looking for results with this board matched with a Q6600 and drawn a blank. Most seem to be tested with the newer 45nm chips which clock very well. I would appreciate it if you could give us the max fsb you can get using the quad.

The info I can find is that the North bridge and South bridge are the same as the the 680i but have a pcie 2.0 bridging chip to support upcoming gpu's. The new board also has improved circuitry enabling it to run and overclock the latest cpu's.

The thermal paste apparently has been improved and is far better than the stuff used on the 680i board so thats a bonus but even if its the usual dollop it will be no different from any other motherboard manufacturer so I don't believe its something that anyone complain about.

Here are my main concerns :

1. The stock NB cooler appears to blow hot air directly onto the GPU that will be in the top slot.

2. You can't run tri sli AND watercool the board.

3. No blocks exist to replace the NB at this time.

4. Reports that the memory controller is still flaky with 4gb of high end ram installed.

Why 20 cm long thats pretty much half the length of the board ! and as I said the bridges are supplied with the board .

No i get what hes saying now. He needs a longer bridge as hes got large aftermarket coolers on his gfx cards and it needs to flex over the top of the coolers as they stick out quite a bit over the edge of the card.

thankyou. the longest one available by asus BARELY reach over the coolers now using slots 1 and 2.

a solution, would be for me to use the HR GT cooler on the top card, and the accelero S1 on the bottom card, so the bridge technically doesnt need to flex over the cooler of the top card. but thats jus unecessary cost tbh.

Just do what i did move the fins down place sli bridge through put fins back to were they were works fine...The fins on the S1 will move back to originall place easly enough

I'm quite interested if the 780 is any more stable than the 680... I could do with an SLI board and have some EPP RAM and an E6600 spare after I killed my last 680 board... got through 2x P5N32-E SLI and a striker with no joy... very fast, featured boards but the northbridge was hideously unstable.

Hi Folks,

Well I finally got round to build the PC on Sunday night using the new bits and pieces and so far, it seems like a pretty good baord. Have come across the 4GB install problem with Vista 64 so will need to sort that before I get the whole thing built but Vista 32 is installed and running quite happily. Not tried over clocking yet but it seems to not have a problem running my Ballsitix memory at 1T which I was quite surprised given its 4x1GB sticks.

I'll report back later whn I've install 64bit and the second GTX.

Steve

Good to hear your up and running yep it does seem to be a good board and as said earlier cant wait to see what they manage to come up with when they release a new bios for it even though this one on the board seems quite good as is.

Ok well thats everything installed hardware wise now. Just finish the OS install and then we'll be in business for some over clocking. Anybody who runs Everest the newest beta reads just about everything on this board.

The onboard sound is one of the best ive heard, listened to a CD then an mp3 using the onboard then installed an X-Fi Gamer card put the CD back on and promptly removed the Xf-I due to hiss and crackles from the card , From the onboard nothing just the tunes no hiss pops or crackles.

Have big concerns over this. Didn't we have this exact same issue with the 680 boards?

From memory yep we did. Also another thing to note Mic setup seems to be causing a few problems on this board for TS or any game related voice , May be my headphone set though not got around to testing with another set yet will update when I have chance to try another headset.
