XP-120 Hotter than stock cooler

you dont need to let as5 settle in. i wish people would stop with that. at best as5 will give you 4-5c when its settled for >300 hours. AT BEST. It isnt the cause of his problems.

i can only think of 3 reasons for the high temps:

1) bad seating
2) too much compound
3) faulty heatsink, which could explain why it was on the MM in the first place.

right. im back lol. ive been took it off and cleaned it put a rice sized blob of thermalright crap on my cpu and squashed it with the heatsink and i look a pic.

You did replace the plastic mounting bracket on your motherboard didnt you (heatsink should have come with a new 1) that pic looks remarkably like your still using the original bracket as the heatsink isnt making contact with the processor.

I think it would be impossible to clip his clips onto a socket 939 retention bracket.

The mounting clips just wouldnt go on...

correct. i did everything i was supposed to do and i get higher temps that my stock which i now have back in

Was the cooler lose when the clips were on ?

Seems to me like the retention bracket wasnt tightened down enough or one side was higher than the other..

it was all as tight as i it would go without breaking my board. the black plastic bracket didnt move and the heatsink was very tight on the clips.

Must be a duff heatsink..

Is it under warranty ?

i bought it off the mm and the guy i bought it off says it was fine when he was using it to cool his A64 3500+ at 2.4

Is the heatsink being obstructed by any capacitors when u fit it? Other than that - again it could be an non-flat surface. Google a lapping guide, if u have sandpaper already it takes 20min, and I use brasso to polish it up. :D

just re seated the heatsink 1 final time. it was 2'c under at idle and its 4-8'c over on load. this is with a akasa amber at full rpm

so looks like it needs to be lapped. make some off the edges try and get the centre to actually hit the IHS...

the guy i bought it off has e-mailed Thermalright and they say that as i have overclocked the fan will not work to its full potential.

could someone please give me some temps with a opty 146 at 2.8 and an xp-120.

Not the same but, my venice @ 2.5 with 1.55v is currently 31c idle with my freezer 64 pro and gets to about 38-40 load. Ambient temps are about 23c.

I would say that Full Load temps should be anywhere between 38 and 42oc with that cooler and voltage,

im on 53 at the minute on load. converting a dvd. ambient temp is 24'c

EDIT:

0SA146DAA5BN
CABYE 0543FPMW

EDIT2: just finished converting and its down to 38'c which is what my stock cooler sits at

Duff temp sensor!!!

Have you tried touching the heat sink while it's supposedly at 50 whatever degrees it is your seeing?

Obviosuly be careful when doing so. I very much doubt those are your real temps.

Input from others? I can't be the only one thinking this.

A "duff sensor" would still show a diference in temp even if the temp itself is incorrect. Instead of 38 idle and 53 load it might show 28idle and 43 load. Either that or it wouldnt change at all so idle and load temps would be the same.

when i touch the heatsink or heat pipes they are barely warm... 30'c max i would say. duff sensor?
