XP-120 Hotter than stock cooler

dont use half a tube of as5, its not needed. im certain its the clips not holdint it tight enough, unless you are sure the corners of the heatsink are interfering with contact. a rough surface wont produce results that bad unless its like a mountain range on there lol

As I said I have a 146 @ 2.7Ghz 1.6v and an xp-120 and its doing ok here. I havent tried the stock heatsink so I have nothing to compare. I was getting 60'c but Ive since added another 120mm amber near my grx and dropped the cpu temp 5'c too. I knocked the vcore down .25v since Ive noticed ATItool artifact tester pinged at me which I assume is the reason I was getting a rare crash in America's Army.

Ive not heard of a "broken heatpipe", I assume its a solid lump of metal tube and not a lot can go wrong there. As I said check the heatsink is not resting ona capacitor to stop it clamping down hard to the socket.

As mentioned previously by the MOD, the picture of the contact area shows the contact is not good enough. It has excessive AS5 in the middle where it should have been pushed out to the edge of the IHS. This means either clamping force is not right (again a capacitor or as James Miller suggested a problem with the clamp), or its needs lapping (not due to roughness of the base but a concave surface.

Its now up to u to either sort it given the advice or just stick to the stock cooler.

As I said I have the same heatsink and processor with an Akasa amber and their isnt anything inherently wrong with the design of these heatsinks.

ive done some tests. i put the heatsink on with a LITTLE ammount of AS5 and mouted it BOTH ways one with the pipes point up and one down. i tried first with a 78CFM output fan and a amber which is about 48CFM i believe.

i got about 38'c in the bios. so i was like okay well. the fans arent making much difference so i took the fan off. and left it sittin in the bios running fanless. temps reached about 50'c and the heat pipes got HOT and the fins got quite warm too.

so ive put the amber fan back on and im converting a dvd again to test load temps and there still reaching and at somepoints going over 50'c.

room temp is 26'c cpu=48-52 pwmic=42-46 nf4=48-50

i also found that when overclocked the chip is about the same temp as normal maybe 2'c difference but thats about it

i might just have to do that. ive just looked at the stats within MBM5 and it hit 55'c  well this cooler should bloody work dut for some reason it just wont...

i'll go back to stock and get a freezer pro lol... what a waste of money/ do you think someone will buy this off the MM for £15?

Mine is like 6 times more squashed that that lol :P

Scythe Might be expensive , but definately worth it imo, ask James aswell :D

Great Cooler, i put a Panaflo 116cfm fan on mine and i LOVE IT :D

ask the guy who sold it to you to take it back and refund you and get him to sell it on. it worked for him, so it must be something on your board that is making it not work.

daven

he thinks that i damaged it even more... i admit there are a few more scratches on the bottom bu he says as it worked for him its not really his problem it doesnt work for me.

i'll order a scythe tomorrow. i cant find it anywhere else but here not at a cheaper price anyway!

The good thing about the ninja coupled with the Tsunami Dream case is that the fan on the side panel blows cool air directly down the middle of the cooler :D
