Xperia Tablet Z

I think it depends a bit on light conditions, etc. while trying to set it up to take a pic to show it I opened up the blinds to get some better light in and its barely if even noticeable under those conditions.

tbh not much really to take pictures of, you really need it in your hands to appreciate the understated design. The texture of the back panel, etc. doesn't really show through in a photo.

Once I'm done with dinner will see about uploading a couple of pics tho.

What are viewing angles like, particularly in landscape mode?

Sony mobile screens of late seem to be lacking here by quite a bit. Don't think they even use IPS.

better viewing angles but the colours seem jaded (yellowy hue)

Just one fingerprint ridden photo, at work atm ...

So far its seeming pretty good, screen definitely seems better than the nexus and it seems more compact.

Struggling to get any decent images of it with the lighting and mobile phone camera I have here, gave up last night as this phone cam couldn't cope with trying to get a useful image of it under indoor lighting.

The yellow hue only seems to show in photos - I noticed it myself from some angles when trying to take pictures but wasn't there when actually looking at the screen.

Landscape mode is pretty much on par with any other IPS panel, portrait mode has some small issues with viewing angles but mostly ok.

EDIT: Looks like the white version makes it a bit easier to get pics of, without some proper gear it just looks like a black frame around a web page in most of my pics :S

There's a thread on the xda forum with the tablet next to the z phone and the viewing angles on the tablet looked great vs the phone.

Found it: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=41222946&postcount=93

Don't have an XDA account but noticed in that thread people asking about NTFS - just tried an external USB2 NTFS formatted disc via OTG and this tablet was unable to read the drive (not suprising as no NTFS support is listed under filesystems). Also a mouse works but the buttons were reversed with no way to remap - doesn't look like Sony has put any effort into USB support.

EDIT: Looks like NTFS support isn't common in Jelly Bean or any recent flavors of Android, my Note supports it as its present in the old version of Gingerbread thats still running on it.

Hi, i aint got this tablet, but can someone goto desktop version of BBC iplayer site and play the HD version of a programme ? doesnt the stock browser support flash ?

Thanks

Doesn't work with Chrome - which is the default browser out the box.

EDIT: Stock browser isn't included in the out the box ROM, Flash Player doesn't "work" with this version of Android - will take some hacking to get it all working - bit pathetic really as my Galaxy Note (Phone) handles it all fine (one of the reasons why I left it on Gingerbread).

Chrome is totally gimped on here and won't let you go to advanced settings, forced install of flash but the latest version of Dolphin helpfully has an option for Flash stuck on Off with a message about it being unstable and won't let you turn it on (basically dummy setting).

Installed the last ICS 4.0 version from here http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-player/kb/archived-flash-player-versions.html and forced it to work in Firefox but the video and audio were mostly out of sync and it wouldn't work in fullscreen.

Not much you have to do, install flash and use a browser that supports flash.

Would be nice if the BBC just sorted it out though, I don't think there is any legitimate reason for an iplayer app not to work on most android devices including HD quality.

Anyway, we do digress, I need to get this home and really have a play with it and set it up, I might even post some side by side videos with the Nexus 10. There was something I noticed when I played a few of the sample videos included on the device, there seemed to be terrible colour banding on the final fantasy video, but I need to check to see whether that is the file rather than the screen. Will be a little disappointed if it's the screen.

Flash works with JB - just need to install the right browser like AOSP.

Not had too much fun trying to get it to work as per my edit above - using the last 4.0 version of flash and a browser that still lets you enable it didn't produce great results - not tried AOSP don't want to go whole hog and redo whole OS and not sure about pulling the individual apks from that.

I've had a good play on the Z now and here's a few conclusions, these are mostly vs the nexus 10 as it's what I moved from and some of the main competition.

The colour and contrast of the screen blow the Nexus 10 out of the water, much better black and the colours are extremely vivid. White level does not seem to be as good as the Nexus 10 though.

Speakers on the nexus 10 are probably better but the speakers on the Z are still pretty good.

As I suspected I have played a few of the games I had issues with on the Nexus 10, games like bladeslinger have much better graphics and a few other games have less issues.

Headphone sound also seems better, more bass.

Pretty happy with it at the moment, 50% of the reason I wanted to change from the nexus was that the screen was just so washed out, the other 50% was the design and weight and it's delivered on both fronts.
