Xperia Tablet Z

Same problem - audio and video not in sync and trying to play fullscreen results in having to force restart the device due to the lack of a proper built in task manager in JB... yay for progress... not.

Not much you have to do, install flash and use a browser that supports flash.

Would be nice if the BBC just sorted it out though, I don't think there is any legitimate reason for an iplayer app not to work on most android devices including HD quality.

Anyway, we do digress, I need to get this home and really have a play with it and set it up, I might even post some side by side videos with the Nexus 10. There was something I noticed when I played a few of the sample videos included on the device, there seemed to be terrible colour banding on the final fantasy video, but I need to check to see whether that is the file rather than the screen. Will be a little disappointed if it's the screen.

Hi, the BBC Iplayer app is soo poor, the quality is so low its just unwatchable, why cant they give a HD option

the reason i asked is that i got a tablet from China called U30GT2, with a rockchip 3188 quad core 1.6ghz , 2gb ram, 10.1inch IPS full 1080p screen, its got latest 4.2.2 and stock browser has got flash working, i can play youtube desktop site with 1080p selected and works perfect, i have tried bbc iplayer desktop site, the HD ones work perfect in normal size, but when i full screen, it gets slight framedrops

so was thinking hardware or software wasn't optimized for it

Battery life so far has been better than I expected - been using it a fair bit all day (only 2nd charge) general web browsing, an hour or so of music, messing about with trying to get stuff like iplayer HD working, watched 2 ~90 minute movies and its now at 51% battery - about 16 hours after starting with a full charge. Usually battery performance/calibration improves a bit to after a week or two of charge cycles.

Mine arrived 2 days ago, does your tablet Z look like Sony have already placed a protective film on the screen?? Mine does?

Mine came with the normal transit screen protector which is very obvious but I had not noticed any kind of film. If I look very closely though I can see something at the edges that could be a protector...

I think it may be a shatter guard like the phone?

Used it plenty more last night and I did not expect it to wow me all round versus the nexus 10 but it definitely delivers what I wanted from it.

The nexus 10 is much better value for money and if you want a tablet that is a good all rounder then the nexus 10 is a no brainer at the current price. However if you want something with a little more style and accessories like the "wireless" charging cradle the Xperia Z is a nice choice. Where it wins hands down is media consumption, colours are so much more vivid and contrast is much more like what you would expect from a modern television versus the n10s washed out picture.

As I said earlier I have tested more games with the Z and there is definitely a better gaming experience to be had on the Z, every game I had problems with on the N10 such as missing effects and graphical glitches were flawless on the Z. Games like NFS Most wanted and bladeslinger have more effects and better textures.

The only place where the N10 blows the Z out of the water is reading black text on a white background, due to the higher pixel density and brighter white it just looks incredible. The pixel density difference between the N10 and the Z is noticeable but not by much, they are both still much better than your average 720p screen.

The only other unknown at the moment is battery life but I can't really render judgement on that until I've run the battery in.

Down to 45% battery after 24 hours of moderate use (still on the second charge) without stamina mode on - definitely holding up better than I'd expected. Stamina mode doesn't really enhance the screen on time tho but does seem to significantly decrease battery use when idle.

By the way, check your bbc iplayer update:

As promised, here’s 10” tablet support – no more shortcut to the website!
We’ve also tweaked the phone and 7” tablet design.
Watch out for further optimisation for larger screens soon, whilst the work continues on video downloads.

Yeah just about borderline watchable on the z tablet but looks pretty bad.

i wouldnt call it watchable , no pleasure watching like that, i can play on desktop site the HD versions on 1080p 10inc tab i got and its such a pleasure to watch at that quality

Yes... I think so too... look real close, it must be! :)

Can anyone tip me off on a program to disable stamina mode when I'm connected to wifi and enable it when I disconnect?

Battery seems pretty good in this by the way, definitely not draining fast and seems pretty comparable to the nexus 10.

Tasker should be able to do it.

Its for the most part a proprietary sony feature so probably aren't apps to customise it.

If you long press on the settings option for it you get a 2nd screen allowing you to change some behavior aspects of it tho.

EDIT: How far does tasker go at automating stuff? can it tap into option screen items that aren't there on stock android?

Thanks I didn't see the other screen, I'll have a look.

Used for a good few hours last night and maybe an hour or so today and down to 35%, moderate use, some HD streaming, some games, mostly browsing, fair bit of youtube.

My concern was with the size/quality of the screen and the relatively small size of the battery it would struggle to make a day of good use but so far even off the first couple of charges and moderate to heavy use its held up fairly well, without even using stamina mode.

EDIT: Also have to give props to Sony for shipping it with a fairly trimmed OS without dozens of pointless bundled apps or massive levels of branding, etc.

Is it me or is this device a dust magnet? Are you guys getting dust in the edges of the screen... ?

I think I have noticed the same thing all around the sides... I think maybe its the screen cover that's on it... noticed it beads water too.
