Xperia Tablet Z

Did any of you guys manage to get the Sony SGP-CV5 case for it? Out of stock everywhere... wished I ordered it when I ordered the tablet.

Not ordered a case myself I'm using the greatshield verse I used for my N10...

I wish I had ordered earlier and got the dock... want the dock so bad :)

Not getting dust in the edges but the screen itself seems to be a dust magnet - also shows finger marks rather obviously when the screen is off so if your OCD about that probably not the tablet for you.

Anyone rooted?

Also anyone else think the back of this tablet is crying out for custom skins? Nice and flat.

Have been reading a few more reviews all of which pitch it against the Nexus 10, nearly all of them conclude that the N10's screen is better or even 'vastly superior' ... Can't help but disagree, the resolution is nice but completely useless if you're watching video. Nobody seems to point out that the Z screen has vastly superior colour and contrast, it also looks sharper to me.

Yeah not sure why reviews often claim the Nexus 10 has a better screen - I've got one here as well as the xperia so I can compare them side by side and while there are some areas the N10 is superior overall the xperia is easily the better screen.

While I was quite hesitant about this tablet before getting my hands on one its fast growing on me. Few little niggles like the default keyboard settings seem poorly thought out and it kept fighting me - deleting some of the stuff I was entering, etc. changed that and added in long press for symbols and much happier.

probably because of higher PPI lol. wouldn't surprise me "oh momma look it has more pixels must be better" i can't stand it when numbers come into play without proper justification.

nexus 10 screen is nice but i too prefer the Z

Had a play with one in John Lewis today, was not smooth at all!

Other than that the tablet was very thin and exceptionally light, quite like it.

But just concerned with the choppiness of Sonys launcher and their very slow updates

Loving the device, however just need Sky Go to work on it. However I figured - this may take months or never...

It's fast and smooth for me! I just wish there were more apps optimized for tablets... you can tell a lot of them are not by the detail of the graphics and UI.

Yeah way too many default to portrait due to being designed for a phone (tho I'm starting to use portrait quite a bit) and either lack the option for landscape, can't be forced to landscape or malfunction when forced to landscape.

Mines fast and responsive so far - not seen any significant sluggishness.

The only negative so far is the little bit of light bleed at the bottom of the screen, definitely not as bad as either of the N10s I had but it's a little bit of a bummer after spending so much on a tablet.

I popped a decal :)

Also rooted in a few minutes flat.

Nice, the back does have a lot of potential for customisation suprised Sony haven't taken up on that.

I saw there was a fairly simple command line way to root it but as I use some apps that moan about root and not looked into if OTA can hide it I've not bothered yet.

EDIT: Seems that method doesn't work with the latest OS build (as most of them ship).

Disagree with one of their comments somewhat:

The angular OmniBalance design is all the more impressive given Sony has managed to shave down the thickness to the mere 6.9mm. Not that it matters much in actual use - this isn't a gadget to put in a pocket, slim or not, but we have been programmed to believe that "thin = cool" and the Tablet Z is keen to take advantage.

I actually find the slimness makes it easier to balance with one hand while using it with the other than most other tablets I've tried.

Also find "Audio output quality is not on par with other tablets on the market" a bit puzzling as mine has crystal clear audio and atleast on par with any other tablet I've used and sounds more lively than most (Tho I did notice some distortion on more complex music so will look into that a bit later - I'm using some pretty decent Sennhesier headphones with mine so issues like crosstalk and distortion/frequency response they mention should be quite easy to spot, wonder if it was a problem with the review device).

I agree, from what I have heard it seems pretty much on par with every other tablet I've owned. Personally I think the Xperia Tablet seems to have more low end oomph too. Not to mention the fact that the Nexus 10 gives interference sometimes when charging. Either way it's not something that holds much weight in the review or in my choice, none of the tablets made by the big manufacturers are going to sound "bad".

Slim wise, it's one of those things, in a lot of ways it feels thicker than the Nexus 10, Tab 10.1 and ipad because it doesn't have a taper. I think the lack of taper at the edge combined with the slimness is what makes it seemingly easier to handle.

Speaking of the weight, it feels nicer than using the heavier Nexus 10 and an ipad feels almost like a brick after using the Z.

I hope they continue to make tablets and I would be happy if 6 - 12 months down the line they release a new tablet with the same form factor.

My aim isn't exactly to criticise that review as I'm not setup to test to the level of testing they have done (tho my gut instinct is there was some issues with their review unit or they exposed some bugs or had misconfiguration in the sound enhancement settings) if you read their conclusion on the audio quality you'd get the impression that the sound quality on this tablet was sub-par to most other tablets - and from my first few days of using it that certainly wasn't the impression I got so...

I did some subjective listening using a pair of Sennheiser MX580s as I've used these on a lot of tablets and phones and they have extreme clarity and a good neutral reproduction that makes it easy to spot significant issues with sound quality. While bass on them is more balanced than powerful they are still good enough to identify issues there.

The music I use for testing is listed here
(this is for reference purposes - most of the testing was done with lossless compression versions)

In brief:

In tunes like Buildings and Mountains and Jack Sparrow when everything is working as intended the sounds of individual instruments are well picked out with good seperation and definition - I did notice 1-2 instances of lower mid-range distortion which probably coincides with the 1-2khz part of the graph in the gsmarena arena review everything else sounded as expected.

Seize The Day and Hotel California - good range of percussion mixed with dynamic vocals and high end instruments/keyboard - lots of chances for distortion here but didn't hear anything that was out of line with any other tablet or phone and was handled better than many.

Limit To Your Love - More applicable really to testing speakers/headphones than the sound hardware but whole load of stuff going on here that can break fidelity. The low end effects from a minute in were reasonably well controlled, the complex sections remained clean.

From the best of my ability to tell by ear characteristics probably are fairly close to what the graph from gsmarena shows, however aside from what I'm assuming is the 1-2KHz issue I didn't see find any signs of noticeable distortion in the rest of the frequency range and the low end bump didn't manifest itself as any issues I was able to reproduce - even using 20-60Hz test tones and sweeps the best of my ability to test showed accurate and tightly controlled low end that was as for all intents and purposes as good as anything else I've listened to tablet/phone/mp3 player wise. Sitting it down and comparing side by side with the galaxy note that they generally praised for having low levels of distortion and good frequency response and aside from what I think is that 1-2KHz area the tablet sounds cleaner and more lively overall.

Crosstalk at the level they are testing can't really be done by ear but most of the tracks I use for testing by their nature will highlight really bad levels of crosstalk which wasn't present.

So subjectively I couldn't tell that the sound quality in the context of everyday tablet use was any worse than average for a tablet and definitely better than a good number of devices I've used.
