Just been playing with confused.com and autotrader.co.uk. (under an assumed identity living next door to me).

Looks like I'll be able to insure a 1.4 ~S Reg hatch for under a grand (20y/o male, Father down as named driver, 3 years claim free driving experience as a named driver, used a 1998 1.4 Bravo SX for the quotes), would be the 1st Policy I've ever taken out. And phoning around insurers should be cheaper.

So with a Job here at Uni it looks like a car is entirely possible. :D Yipee, I'm a happy chappy.

So assuming I do go ahead with this, what beginners mistakes am I going to make?

Edit: I already know the 1.4 Bravo is a mistake.

Ouch, a grand?

I Paid (3ish years ago when 19) £700 for a 1.4 escort, bare in mind with a SP30 a crash and being a van driver as a job description and nil NCB

Tbh that sounds expensive for 3 years NCB.

Stuff like confused.com is pap isn't? Just check with directline for example, should be cheaper.

Should be able to get a 2.0 litre car for under a grand I would have thought.

At 19 I paid £300 less than that to comprehensively insure a brand new Saxo VTR :/

That's extortionate at a GRAND.

Doesn't seem too bad to me

I paid £1500 to insure a 1.4 Astra at 19 (albeit fully comp with no NCB, in Canterbury and with an accident & fault claim on my policy)

No he has 3 years claim free driving experience (as a named driver on someone elses policy).

£1000 does seem high though.

Does that not only count as NCB if the new policy is taken out with the same people providing 'Named driver NCB' ?

Its not 'no claims bonus' it is just claim free driving experience. (assuming I read the op post right of course)

Per the op post:

That says to me he was on his dads policy (ie on his dads car) but was not earning no claims as it wasn't his policy (NCB for named drivers is only on certain policies ie the ones from direct line)

Yep a grand is about right, maybe you could be looking at slightly cheaper. I paid ~£800 for 10 months for a 2l mondeo at 19.

Admiral group were by far the cheapest btw, and the ncb on the 10month policies will get you 'quick' ncb which will work out cheaper (assuming you dont claim)

Dad has >30 years NCB

I have 3 years claim free as a named driver.

And I have 0 years NCB

The cheapest confused gave me was £825, so I'm confident if I just phone around, then 600 to 700 is achievable.

Oh, and I have Pass Plus to wave about too.

Since the 1.4 Bravo is a pile of rubbish I'm looking for an "80 SX" model, Early ones with 80k on seem to appear for less than £1k now and then.

I paid less than that for the Impreza in similar circumstances, and I have a Manchester post code.

Shop around more.
