Lovely cats but I can't believe people lock their cat indoors! It is cruel and there is no good reason, if you think there is then you shouldn't have one!
Makounuchi doesnt keep his cats indoors because he lives in a very rural village. I, however, live in London and my 2 pedigree cats are indoor cats. So, let me reply to your comment.
First off, if I let either of my 2 cats out I predict that they will be stolen within 3-7 days. Reflex (Egyptian Mau) might last longer as he is quite shy, but Mr. Bengal (Bengal) is quite friendly and can easily be handled by strangers.
Secondly, as I live close to lots of shops/roads, etc, its likely that they might get run over. Reflex might last longer as he is quicker and heightened senses, but even he could have a lapse in concentration and get run over.
Thirdly, and this is the one that is a little scary - Reflex is a very aggressive, physical cat. He is incredibly fast, as dictated by his breed type. I've noticed that he doesnt like other cats to be in his territory. I've made some videos of him, playfighting with Mr. Bengal (
http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17847772&page=2) and though Mr Bengal is a larger cat, Reflex absolutely dominates and harrasses him into submission. He is a very strong cat as well (much stronger than the larger Bengal, who is now his friend). Consider that the videos in that thread were taken when he was 4 months old - he is a lot stronger now. If he was a cat, I would liken him to a Pit-Bull Terrier, ie. used to fight other dogs. His father was exactly the same - a very "hot" personality, to the point where no other cats were allowed inside his cage (he was caged outdoors, as he was out to stud - once neutered, he would stop spraying and would be allowed indoors). The breeder told me that they let another cat in with him, for company and he proceeded to drag the other cat around by the scruff of its neck...with ease. Thats the background.
So, getting back to the third point, my fear is that if I let Reflex out, eventually, he will find a foriegn cat in my garden and proceed to attack it. It wont be able to outrun Reflex, so would certainly get caught and dragged back by Reflex if it attempts to run away. I donot wish another cat owner to come knocking on my door saying that my cat has just mauled their cat. I'm not one of those irresponsible owners who come out with the usual, "Oh no, my Reflex wouldnt do that".
Lastly, when I bought the cats, both breeders stated that it is advisable to keep them indoors, to prevent them from being run over, killed, stolen, etc. In general, pedigree cats tend to be kept indoors. It is EXTREMELY rare that you see a pedigree cats on the street - usually, you only see moggies.
For these reasons, I keep the cats indoors.
