Yesterdays Arrivals! (Kittens)

Wow, they're massive!

I'm settled on a Maine **** for a definite pet in the future. I've heard so much good about their temperament and slightly mad behaviour traits that other cats don't exhibit.

My current cat is a wannabe Maine ****, he looks a little like one, but is about half the size (and intelligence no doubt:D)! He'll have to do for now though, unless I get the urge to upgrade. My ultimate pet want is to have a Maine **** and a Pug. :D

I forget exactly, something like £200. They had already had all injections + 2 months of paid pet insurance in with that though, so not a bad price imo for a pedigree pure breed.

If they're anything like our non-pedigree-maine-****-thingy you've got a bargain!

- Are they friendly and playful?
- What sex are they?

Our's used to play fetch with balls of paper when he was younger... To this day he's super sociable and pops over to see neighbours when they arrive home. He follows my other half around the house like he was a dog! Very very friendly!

Hello there :)

Thanks for the pictures, beautiful looking cats. I love the size on there whiskers and eyebrows :p, i bet there cheeky buggers as well ;)

Lovely cats but I can't believe people lock their cat indoors! It is cruel and there is no good reason, if you think there is then you shouldn't have one!

You clearly haven't read any of this thread. I don't agree with keeping any animals inside, when i had dogs they were free to roam the village as they pleased, and my cats are no different. Theres a cat flap in my front door and they come and go as they please, hence me talking about them catching mice and birds...

When they were kittens they were very playfull, but these days they amuse themselves outside more often, which is nice for me because i dont have to spend so much time during work keeping them busy. But they are very friendly, i usually have at least one of them on my lap for most of the day when im in the office (i work from home). They came from champion show cat parents and i think that personality has come out in one of them, its very happy to sit with on you and be stroked and purr and stuff but it doesnt give a lot back, its still a very nice temperment but the other one has a much better personality. The other onecant get enough of me, if its in my lap it will try and paw its way up my jumper so it can nuzzle my face, and it purrs like crazy, if im lying in bed it will come and sit on my neck or face :D So yes they both have good personallities but as with people they are both different. They are both boys, they havent been castrated yet but they dont spray in the house and they dont fight, because i let them outside where they can wear themselves out anf mark their territory. I think if you were having them as house cats youd need to castrate earlier.

Our's Maine **** wanna-be is male as well. From your feedback I'm definately interested in getting another Maine **** (or close) in the future... Judging by ours, and yours, they seem to have a very good temperment!

Do yours molt much?

Makounuchi doesnt keep his cats indoors because he lives in a very rural village. I, however, live in London and my 2 pedigree cats are indoor cats. So, let me reply to your comment. ;)

First off, if I let either of my 2 cats out I predict that they will be stolen within 3-7 days. Reflex (Egyptian Mau) might last longer as he is quite shy, but Mr. Bengal (Bengal) is quite friendly and can easily be handled by strangers.

Secondly, as I live close to lots of shops/roads, etc, its likely that they might get run over. Reflex might last longer as he is quicker and heightened senses, but even he could have a lapse in concentration and get run over.

Thirdly, and this is the one that is a little scary - Reflex is a very aggressive, physical cat. He is incredibly fast, as dictated by his breed type. I've noticed that he doesnt like other cats to be in his territory. I've made some videos of him, playfighting with Mr. Bengal (http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?t=17847772&page=2) and though Mr Bengal is a larger cat, Reflex absolutely dominates and harrasses him into submission. He is a very strong cat as well (much stronger than the larger Bengal, who is now his friend). Consider that the videos in that thread were taken when he was 4 months old - he is a lot stronger now. If he was a cat, I would liken him to a Pit-Bull Terrier, ie. used to fight other dogs. His father was exactly the same - a very "hot" personality, to the point where no other cats were allowed inside his cage (he was caged outdoors, as he was out to stud - once neutered, he would stop spraying and would be allowed indoors). The breeder told me that they let another cat in with him, for company and he proceeded to drag the other cat around by the scruff of its neck...with ease. Thats the background.

So, getting back to the third point, my fear is that if I let Reflex out, eventually, he will find a foriegn cat in my garden and proceed to attack it. It wont be able to outrun Reflex, so would certainly get caught and dragged back by Reflex if it attempts to run away. I donot wish another cat owner to come knocking on my door saying that my cat has just mauled their cat. I'm not one of those irresponsible owners who come out with the usual, "Oh no, my Reflex wouldnt do that".

Lastly, when I bought the cats, both breeders stated that it is advisable to keep them indoors, to prevent them from being run over, killed, stolen, etc. In general, pedigree cats tend to be kept indoors. It is EXTREMELY rare that you see a pedigree cats on the street - usually, you only see moggies.

For these reasons, I keep the cats indoors.

Sorry i didn't see this question. No they don't really. The real problem is the amount of twigs and leaves they bring in tangled in t heir fur, i've got most of a tree scattered about my house right now, it really needs hoovering up. And i have to check their stomachs and under their legs daily to check for tangled fur balls, because if you let them develop they can get really bad a end up hurting the cat.

We've got a Pixiebob, awesome cat, we've brought it up a bit too playful though :P

Pixiebob's are supposed to be big, but Maine ****'s are huge compared to them if you're lucky.

Cat went into the cattery for a break, and was in a cage next to one :P

Oh, things i forgot to mention. Incase people don't know about Maine Coons as a breed, they come from America, and are one of the largest domestic cat breeds there is, all those pictures you see on the internet of people holding giant cats are Maine Coons. They take a good 3-4 years to actually grow to full size which is very unusal for cats, so in those pictures they probably look pretty small for their age, but they are already climbing up the curtains :(

Oh and the best thing about pedigree kittens? Litter trained from day 1.

Lovely kitties there :) We have a Maine **** - people are always shocked when they see him because he's so big. He's only 3 as well - he's gonna fill out a lot more. They have a wonderful temperament. As I'm typing this ours is lying among the shoes waiting to pounce on our other cat :p
