Your bad driving encounters

Not yet, was going to try and get a reg number first but will have to give up on that idea and just report it anyway today. sadly the BMW built in cameras only record at 1280 x 960 and 15fps which makes number plate recovery nearly impossible unless you are on CSI Las Vegas.
Picture of gil saying enhance that and it coming out at 16k pixel perfect after a couple of seconds. Also lol to the other reg above :p . I think the frame rate makes a bigger difference than the resolution (as long as it's high enough to start with).

What is going on with anti social drivers lately? People just being completely horrible. I think I have come across someone driving aggressively on every single car journey I have been on in the last month.

I can understand that sometimes people make mistakes when driving (I do too) but driving aggressively is so unnecessary.

I drive a Nissan Leaf 24kWh and like to stick to the speed limit to conserve battery power. No matter if I am in a 30, 40 or 60mph zone within a matter of minutes I usually have a tailgater on my back every time I go out. The indicated speed on the Leaf's Speedo is inaccurate so I always adjust for it so I know I am driving at the correct speed.

The other day I was coming home from a longer trip on country roads driving about 10 mph below the speed limit to save battery as there was no one behind me. I saw an old Corsa approach. I started to increase my speed a little and also look for somewhere to pull over to let them past. As soon as they caught up to me they started tailgating. They were behind me for about 10 seconds before I indicated and pulled over at a layby to let them past. They went past blaring their horn at me.

Tonight I was sticking nearly exactly to the speed limit coming home in a mixture of 30's and 40's whilst being tailgated by some clown in a 4x4. They waited until we were in a 30 zone to overtake right in front of a junction on the wrong side of a traffic island.

Why are people like this?

its not just driving
Since the pandemic of Covid 19 , society has actually got worse. I work in a shop and people are a lot more rude and aggressive and nasty now than before

im one of the guys that "thanks" people, even if its in a shop asking for such an item, its just common curtesy !

I think you are right. It feels like there is a definite increase in nastiness in the UK. To anyone reading this who finds themselves driving to close to another driver, deliberately or not, slow down a bit and create a decent sized gap. All you are doing by tailgating is upsetting someone and being dangerous. There is enough upset in the world as it is without you contributing a little bit more for no real reason.

Stop driving at 35 in a 60 then!

Had someone pull out of a junction, which has a stop line due to limited/no visibility straight into my path, heading towards me, earlier :( fortunately I saw their headlights approaching and just had a feeling from the progression of them the driver wasn't going to check it was clear and pre-emptively slowed and covered the brakes - otherwise it would have been a head on :( making for the second head on collision on that bit of road within a few hours :(

I find the opposite. Since more people ended up with a hybrid working model, there are less cars on the roads during rush hours. The few times I do my normal rush hour commute, I have noticed this. It seems to have helped a bit with the reduced stress levels while driving IMHO.

Less traffic jams
Fewer morons driving (me included)
Shorter driving times.
All reduce driver stress levels slightly which means less anger.

No scientific data other than my experience pre and post covid.

Nearly had a head-on this morning.
Approaching a T junction from the adjoining road, I was turning left. Car comes from the left, turning in to the adjoining road and cuts the junction so much he was completely on my side of the road. He took evasive at the last moment and I did an emergency stop. Sounded the horn at him and was shown the finger. Nice.

that remands me

i was following a car home from work yesterday and i nearly called 999, as i think i was following a drunk driver

variable speed 35-50 (in an NSL) slamming on brakes for no reason, drives on the wrong side of the road, indicates right for no reason, end of junction indicates one way then indicates the other way, then mounts the kerb as he turned left etc

I was behind an old black GTD about 6am-ish, driving mad slowly (I was in the people carrier, else I wouldn't have sat and suffered) after a couple mins they threw some black rubber gloves out the window, then sped off. Gotta love Handsworth!

Have you tried driving behind a 24kwh nissan leaf? It's pretty grim living. :p

Seems like too many of you are upset by other people versus just focusing on your own driving.

Other people's driving doesn't happen in isolation.
Fair, but getting worked up about being tailgated is sometimes worse than the act of tailgating (not that I'm defending tailgating). People end up focusing on the rear view and anger versus what's in front of them.

Agree that people are really selfish and rude on the road lately. Not necessarily aggressive or dangerous even, but my last few drives I've had a lot of people closing ranks in a queue, refusing to leave any room at all etc. Spent a good few hours in London yesterday and any time there was merging lanes I just got a blank stare or being ignored and the driver staring straight ahead like they're blinkered. It's that kind of direct interaction that tires me out while driving, I can do traffic and speed/risk assessment all day long really.

That said, just yesterday I saw...

- Zipper merging as lane 4 of the M25 (I think? Or M11) merges so I leave a good space in front for the outside lane to merge into mine, and a good space behind for the following person to merge too. What does the following person do? Cruise past me riding the road boundary line once their lane had properly closed. Slow motion rudeness, pretending I don't exist. I lost my **** to be honest as I've got 15 other things stressing me out this weekend beyond driving. I was looking around the car for something to throw at him.

- Mercedes following traffic too fast in outside lane of M1 and didn't realise congestion was growing. Heard a screech as they hit the brakes and all 4 tyres let a cloud of smoke off. Stank. Just bad decision making on their part!

- Went over the crest of a hill on the South Circular A205 so 30mph but London traffic/busyness. Saw the car in front slowing into a queue so I slowed down sharpish without panicking. Car behind me skidded as they reacted to me/the very visible long queue in front.

I think the heat isn't helping either TBH.

Agreed. I really noticed it during the first lockdown in 2020. Before COVID I thought about 10% of British people were scum.. during the lockdown it became apparent it’s much closer to 50%.

Bob on. And often not just tailgating but perceived tailgating.
