Your bad driving encounters

Did I miss a memo which stated you don't have to look left before turning left out of a junction?

I'm guessing I did because the number of times it's happened to me today is ridiculous.

Another "no light-er" this morning. Someone else flashed them and they did get the hint, surprisingly.

I drove from Glasgow to Aberdeenshire several weeks ago in some pretty horrendous weather, the number of people without lights on was ridiculous. Plenty of them were modern and fairly new cars too, which means either they've turned the auto-lights off or have changed the settings such that they won't activate unless all light in the universe is extinguished. My car has light and rain-sensing lights but I still check they've activated.

Quite thick layer of snow here the other day and therefore reminded again of the 4*4 that mounted the pavement to overtake at 35+ in the same kind of weather nearly binning it in the process :D

On my way to work Monday on the dual-carriageway into town, torrential rain, spray, loads of standing water, massive HGV tailgating a farm tractor and trailer... then at the last moment as I got close the HGV indicated and pulled out in one motion to overtake causing me to get on the brakes pretty hard which was less than ideal in those conditions, road empty behind me... then less than 300m up the road the HGV pulled into a lay-by causing the tractor to have to come almost to a stop... hope there was a good reason for that behaviour as I'd be giving them a good talking to if that was one of our drivers :s and I'm generally non-confrontational.

No point having a 4x4 if you aren't going to use it :o

I think some people assume it will be clear as traffic if flowing that way, not thinking someone could be overtaking a stationary object.

I had one the other night, pull out of layby on a dual carriageway as I was rapidly approaching at 70. No lights, no indication. Luckily I saw a small flash of brake lights just before so was aware they were there

having driven in Italy a few times now, there isnt a lot that can phase me in this country anymore :) but if youre parked up and in your car, turn your bloomin lights off or down a notch.
There's someone on the road next to mine who seems to leave their full beams on any time their car is even unlocked. Half the time I drive home, I have to head down a side road their driveway faces head on and get dazzled. I've seen them pottering around loading stuff into the boot, no one in the car. FFS!

Long story short had a very annoying driver on the dual-carriageway to work today who just sat in lane 2 whether they needed to be there or not without a care for anyone else... I dunno why people can't just drive normally.

Coming home around a long bend saw a single roadworks sign on the other side almost looked abandoned, slowed down a little expecting to find more warning signs at the exit of the bend only to find in the middle of the bend was a van stopped with a few cones out blocking my side of the road, had to go around them without being able to see if there was traffic coming the other way... I'm guessing it was an emergency repair of some sort but utterly brain dead - bad enough for people driving normally but there are loads of people who drive way too fast around that corner... looked like a contractor for either Jurassic Fibre or Gigaclear - both of which have been criticised and fined, not enough, for the poor organisation and conduct of their repair work.

On the way to work Saturday there was a crash closing the main road, for some reason an old lady in a flowery dress directing traffic instead of the emergency services though there was emergency services appliances in attendance - not great as due to the incident being just after a rise in the road goes into a corner she wasn't visible from very far back - would have offered her one of my hi-vis vests but wasn't a good place for me to stop.

You shouldn't judge! How do you know they didn't need to turn right at a roundabout in 187 miles!?

Well I'm sure they needed to turn right at some point in the next few days, and were just getting in position early (this is the only logic I can think of - maybe my mistake is to try and apply any logic to it at all)

Travelling back from Epsom last night. M25 clockwise, the four lane bit near West Byfleet. About 630pm so dark but thankfully dry. I'm cruising in lane 2 at about 65mph slowly passing a truck on the inside lane when all of a sudden I become aware of something big over my right shoulder. Truck in lane three is edging me but I've literally got nowhere to go. Surely he'll see me and back off? Nope kept coming, Crunch, pushes me - not 100% sure what happened next but got pushed left, had to over correct to avoid truck in lane 1, managed to hold onto the car as it swerved into lane three and somehow managed to straighten it up again. Pretty hairy moment.

Pull over in hard shoulder, Truck driver pulls in behind me gets out his cab. I had a passenger to witness to all of it. Anyway, I asked him what he was doing, he accused me of undertaking him but then fesses up that I was in his blindspot and he didn't see me but still seems to insist that it was my fault!. get all his details and manage to calm down enough to drive off and get the 55 miles home. Rear quarter panel has nasty damage, rear door is pretty crushed.

Bloody lucky really.

That is why I never cruise when passing HGVs - I spend as little time in their potential blind spot as possible. What on earth a truck was doing in lane 3 passing you when you were doing that speed though is another matter again, someone needs to be investigating that.

EDIT: Also seeing more and more utter ******* stupid driving by HGV drivers...

Not sure the passenger counts as a whintess in the eyes of insurance?

The truck that crashed into your was overtaking you but didn't see you? Surely he knew you where there as presumably he pulled out to overtake you??

This is where a dash cam would.be invaluable. The truck might have one?

It's in the hands of the insurers. They can sort it out. I'm just relieved it wasn't worse.
