Your current Fish tank Setups!

Hi.
My fluval (remember its old) needs 40.7cm for the tank then the doors are 36.5cm when fully open. Also you may want an external filter which will stop it being flush against the wall which will add ~3cm.
Heres a quick video I just shot of my shoe string setup.

That is so awesome! Not sure I could manage a salt water setup, but that's brilliant what you have there :)

Thanks very much :) and for the measurements!

G

/edit why do you say it's shoe string?

All of my equipment was pre-owned inc live rock. Got it all very cheap from various places/sites. Entire setup minus fish and the salt that has had to go in it will have cost me around £250 inc a filter and protein skimmer and led lights.
Edit:Thanks for compliments.

Love it.

Couple more questions.... If I get the Roma 200 it comes with a Fluval U4 but what would people recommend as an external alternative? Also how much more does it cost to run an external one and do they come with all the pipes etc you need? Buying from Maidenhead Aquatics. Are they likely to let me pay the difference to get an external instead of the U4?

Thanks,

G

All external filters come with all the pipe work needed, i wouldn't even worry about the running costs of a filter lol, Fluval or Eheim :)

Thanks :)

Good to hear that Fluval is a respectable make. As you can probably tell I'm an utter novice.

We have a tiny 15-20 litre tank iny sons bedroom and that's it so far. I want too be it down to the living room as nobody pays much attention to them up there.

By running costs I don't mean the running costs like electricity I mean the media you have to replace, I understand its more frequent and more expensive with external, or am I wrong?

Also am I right in assuming that if I get an external filter that the only think taking away from the aesthetics inside the tank will be the heater?

Cheers,

G

You'll probably have to pay the full price of the external filter. Given the saving over buying the aquarium where you were going to you can buy the external if you're desperate for one and sell the internal one as new on the bay? Win win, surely :)

I didn't have to in the end:) they knocked £45 off the external filter for me...this is what I have picked up just now....

Fluval Roma 200 + Cabinet (black)
Aquamanta EFX1000U
24KG of off white coral sand
Some weird round things lol (Pure Aquarium Evolution Aqua)

Rounded down to £400

Thoughts?

I'm running a fluval external filter in mine, I started with a 205 but moved to a 405 for a bit extra headroom.

It keeps the water quite clean & the spray bar I added agitates the top surface quite nicely.

Got all my stuff 2nd hand so far so saved a fortune, also you often find when buying the folk selling have some great tips, I might have been lucky as both guys I bought from were into their stuff & not just selling because they were bored.

What an absolute ******* disaster!!!!

The ******* filter has leaked EVERYWHERE ******* out about an inch worth of water from the tank all over the floor and the inside of the new cabinet.

I am absolutely livid!

Its the dreaded common problem with a lot of filters whilst putting the lid back on and starting off, my teratec 1200 had a design fault with the o ring, bought a new top and it's fine now, you can get air locks inside so make sure all the air is out with bleeding the pipes if you have taps on the hoses.

To be honest I'm so angry with it that I am not going near it again today because I will smash smash it to tiny pieces.

It will be going back in the morning.

Can anyone recommend an alternative from maidenhead aquatics?

Sorry I don't mean an alternative to the shop I mean an alternative filter that maidenhead aquatics sell :) cause I will see if they can swap
It for
Something that won't destroy my living room on the spot.

When i was running my reef system I used the fluval fx5 awesome filter, would highly recommend. Although a did tend to go overboard when it came to my salty project ;)

I will get a Fluval 406 I think.

Main reason I chose those over the Fluval was the built in UV. BUt I will get a standalone JBL UV if I think one is necessary now.

The Aquamanta's are decent filters, so hopefully you'll get sorted out by the retailer and all will be well.

I'd personally advise against the Fluval series, as from experience I've found them much harder work to do maintenance on. I'm a huge JBL fan these days, and now run them exclusively.

UV won't be required, so you can save a few quid there.

Sorry you've had such a rough start, and best of luck!

Having taken this filter apart it does look very easy to maintain.... Are the Fluvals not
So much?

If these are decent and I just got a **** one I may be happy to try again, unless the Fluval is a better option. Not much choice from this retailer, but as they knocked £45 off the external filter because I did t want the internal one I feel obliged to get it from them.
