Nano setup - Day1 :)

Just setting up a nano reef with a Fluval Edge tank. An amazing birthday present from my GF and it sounds like she's done tons of research!

I've got live rock sitting in it now with a few interesting bits and pieces appearing on it, most exciting is some sort of filter feeding worm! Will add some coral and perhaps a cleaner shrimp after I get back from skiing and go from there! It's all really exciting and I can't wait to get it set up properly. Some of the advice is seriously daunting and the water balance sounds tricky. However, I figure that with regular testing and water changes (with water from the shop first) I should do ok!

I have a question to all of you who have tropical tanks, do you all use RO water or just tap water?

reef Tank yes RO water is a must.
For a regular Tropical Tank then tap water is fine as long as it has been treated with de-chlorinator.
If you have a large tank then to save money you can use pond de-chlorinator. I change 10-20% of my 55 gallon every week and only end up using a couple of mls of pond de-chlorinator to treat the water. Saved me a small fortune

x2 for the RO is a must in a reef tank.

Tropical tanks i'm not so sure.

I've decided not to go for the Orca 550 and have changed to the Aquareef 200. Pics when it arrives mid/end of next week!

impressive tanks they are :D

im getting hair algea in my cycle, forgot to test for phosphates. Got some rowaphos on order now ;) eveything else is spot on. ordering some zoas/ric's and some critters next week

what sand/kits etc you go for :) ?

Tank - nano cube 24g,

I got sand (I think second to finest) from LFS, white live sand.

Live rock from LFS.

2 x Nano koralia powerheads (one for mixing salt and water).

Salt I use is Tropic Marine Pro Reef and I have only soft corals but all of them seem to be growing very well. If you plan on keeping corals then don't get the cheapest salt, if you dont want to keep any corals cheapest salt will do just fine. I don't add any magnesium or anything else, all is growing well.

2 xThermostat (one for mixing salt and water) - cant remember the brand now but they all quite cheap (I got some branded one from ebay for like half price compared to shop prices).

Protein skimmer - dont have one, just do regular weekly water changes and keep stock to low levels.

Magnetic cleaner for cleaning aquarium glass - any brand will do just fine.

Salifert kits - nitrite, nitrate, ammonia, pH is all you need, you get all 4 for about £20.

I think that's all I got for my tank.

just for anyone what im using:

d-d h2Ocean salt - dont need to buffer it
caribsea grand bahamas sand (with shells and stuff in) reallly fine sand, plus a bit of mature sand from the guy i got my LR off.

api reef master test kit. ill get my water checked at lfs before i get fish though
nano koralia
swapping my 1200 maxi jet for a 900
mag float cleaner (essential!!)

Got my name down for a black&white misbar and orange misbar clown pair :D picked up 3 blue knuckle hermits today :) putting in an order for my few coral frags and other cuc sooon!

I have just been offered a tank that cost 500 quid full of tropical Fish including Japanese fighting fish some sort of shark. a Fire eel and Angel fish. well thats what i have been told is in it. plus much more. for 150 Quid.

Its a woman at my wifes work had it for years and all the kit. only selling because they are moving house and dont have room for it.

Going to look at it but feel extremely tempted.

Siamese fighting fish cannot be kept with other male fighters. Males can be kept with a large group of female to spread around bullying. They are fin nippers too. Will nip at anything with long coloured finnage
Probably a red tailed shark, black shark or Bala shark.
Fire eels grow biiig, and need a sand substrate to be happy.
Angel fish need a tank with at least 18 inches (from memory) depth to be happy.

This will need to be a big tank for some of those inhabitants!

Just hope the shark isn't a black (not red tailed) shark, they can grow over two feet! :) Sounds like it'll have room for a reasonable amount of growth.
