Your current Fish tank Setups!

Ordered myself the smaller cabinet in the end, called the company and they said the larger model wasn't braced in the middle.

Not had much time for the tank this week due to work, but did some water testing last night.
0 Ammonia, 0 Nitrite. Nitrates are sitting at around 10ppm.

Should I be adding some sort of ammonia product to keep the filter bacteria fed?
I don't have any kind of livestock at the moment (was hoping to add some shrimp next week), I'm still unsure how ammonia got into the tank in the 1st place.

BTW does anyone have any shrimp recommendations, I was going to get some cherry shrimp to start.

cheery shrimp are definitely the easiest to keep so best to see if you can keep them alive before moving to the more expensive variety’s. Bonus being that they are also the cheapest :)

Hi there

Me and the Mrs shall be moving home soon and were planning a small fish tank, done the usual visited pets at home but just wondered if there was an online shop that people recommend for buying tank and accessories from etc.
Going to start with just some good plain simple cold water species and probably something like a 2-3FT tank or a cool shape corner tank but at same time a tank that fish like to be in.

Most coldwater fish get pretty big so you need a big tank if you want more than a couple. I have some young common goldfish in my pond and they are already about 5" long. The smaller tropical fish are better suited to tanks tbh. Plus they wont eat all the plants :)

I started with Rasboras in my 110ltr tank, which are a small schooling fish and look great when you have a load of them.

Not sure if there is a best online shop. I use a local store so I can see what I'm getting. Most of the good ones can make custom tanks to any size or shape, often cheaper too.

That is good to know, would rather buy from local pet shop ideally, thanks. :)

Moving to Thailand next year and already planning some new tanks. Think the first year or so will be rented so wont go to crazy but I'm itching to get a 500L+ going. Have no experience with sumps but starting the learning process now. Might trial with some smaller tanks before going full hog. I'm thinking of a nice planted discus tank long term but I am wondering how expensive predrilled tanks are in general. How much would a 500L drilled tank cost over here for example?

+1 for Charterhouse Aquatics.

If you're going for a cold water set-up, bear in mind that they can get pretty big and will need plenty of room and filtration.

There are many ways of doing things. Set the tank up with plants and decorations and once it's cycled start with a few easy fish. Some middle/surface dwelling ones and some bottom feeders (can use shrimp for this).

Once it gets going it's pretty easy to look after. The plants will soak up nutrients and need trimming once in a while and the shrimp will eat the fish poop, then you just vaccum the shrimp mess off the bottom once in a while (but it will also feed plants). The first few months are the hardest and when diseases etc are more likely to appear. So don't jump right in with really expensive fish :)

As you will be in a more exotic country why not go marine?

Maybe in time. Lack of experience with it is off putting and time spent away traveling would make managing it tricky.

Have walked around that market before but I'm going to be living up in Chiang Mai so I won't be able to visit the market all the time. The shops up in the mountains should still be pretty good though.

If you have had aquariums before, lack of marine experience can be overcome with plenty of research. But if no one is home for more than a couple of days it would be difficult.

If I were you though, in time when I could, I'd be taking advantage of the fact a lot of the more popular fish live in the seas surrounding Thailand.

Yeah I would love to but might be a few years off. Might set up some ponds outside for fighting fish etc. maybe guppies or something simple. Will get more used to a sump layout and if I can be around enough to keep my Discus alive I might move onto marine.

We have a large orb in the kitchen and this in the lounge, but as were moving soon we’ve decommissioned it until were in the new house

Does anyone have the Dennerle 55L Scapers Tank? I was seeking advice on what light and filter to get? I like the look of the Oase 100 BioPlus Thermo which included a heater to save on space and the Aquael Leddy Smart 6W or maybe something like the NICREW Planted LED Aquarium Light. Not sure Dennerle starter pack light worth the expense so thinking get the tank itself.

I was going to have some slow growing plants, Tetras, Shrimps and/or Chili Rasboras but wanted to get the water sorted so can choose what fish to get later this month.

Any other fish recommendations that are easy for a child to look after?

I would be concerned the Aquale light doesn’t have the spread to light the whole tank. I can’t comment on the other light, I have seen or used one.

Filter is fine though, decent bits of kit.

Spread of the whole tank was the concern with the light. I was originally looking at the 35L tank but the 55L just gives more space without being that much bigger. Most set-up pictures I've seen doubles up on LED lights. Just seeing if anyone has light suggestions that they've had success with.

Thanks.
