Your current Fish tank Setups!

Otos tend to be very fragile when you first get them. They're almost all wild caught and tend to starve on the journey over here. There's also a theory that their gut microfauna which they need to digest algae dies off during the transit and may never recover. Always try and buy ones that have been in the fish shop for at least a fortnight and have nice rounded bellies. Not worth the risk on thin/newly imported fish.

I'm gonna see if the LFS will take them, put an ad up on couple of aquaria sales website and maybe contact The Deep or other aquariums. I certainly can't keep them if he's churning them out at this rate.

Ahh, its good to see that youre doing something about them :) Hope you find a good home for them!

I've heard this too. If this is the case, it would make sense as the little one was fine from the start but the larger one never spent as much time browsing around for food. From what I hear, they need to spend a large majority of their time looking for food.

My tank has a 3d background which I never clean and is covered with algae, brown and filamentous types, which I'm sure they could eat, yet only my little one did.

I think I might try to get 3 ones from the LFS (with a close inspection) to get a bit of a school going. I might try to get rid of the danios to some unsuspecting newbie, they are driving me and the other fish+shrimp mad!

i caught this guy this morning in my fish tank using the ol' prawn in a glass trick.

the body is about an inch across.

After a little heating advice...

I've just purchased a 35 litre tank to upgrade from my current Fluval Edge (Small upgrade, but an upgrade nonetheless!).

In my fluval I have a betta, and 3 harlequin rasbora. I'm using the fluval 25w heater in it, which is set at 26C internally - perfect for my betta and the small 23 litre tank.

Now that I've got a slightly bigger tank (currently cycling) - I need to keep it at the same temp to keep my fish happy - but am I going to need more wattage?

I've read that 25w is sufficient up to 5 gallons, and 50w up to 10 gallons etc...

The new tank in gallons, is roughly 7. Do I need a stronger heater?

Depends where the tank is and the average room temperature.

I've use a 100W heater in a 180l tank no problems as the room temperature is at least 20C all year round.

Just uploaded a quick vid of my new Trichopsis pumila (sparkling gourami). Very underated little fish I think, here they are hunting ostracods amongst the hairgrass in my 30cm cube -

Wow your tank is stunning and so clean and healthy. I'm guessing you inject co2 to get those results? Is that Hairgrass your using as sort of a carpet plant? I have tried growing that a few times, But I don't inject co2 so have had no luck unfortunately.

Moved in with the Mrs not so long ago now and i've always wanted some fish so went out a few weeks ago an bought a BiOrb 30l kit with everything ready to go for £85.00 so snapped that offer although not the best tank, its a nice size to start of with until we upgrade later on when I buy a house so this will do for now. .... SNIP...

I've also already upgraded the standard pump to an Eheim 3701. Just becuase this pump is super silent and was needed as the tanks in the living room.

Pic of our tank.
Looks great for a Biorb, we've got some Danios in a BiUbe (Danios seem three parts indestructible, even when "looked after" by kids) and just replaced the standard pump with the Eheim on your recommendation as ours is in the living room as well... Wow, what a difference, I can hear the TV again.! :D

Love the central Airtube ornament, can you point me in the right direction for it, I mainly seem to find somewhat cheesy volcanoes so far :D

Cheers. No CO2, or fert dosing really, other than some trace every couple of months. Trick is to buy the hairgrass from a nursery/garden center pond section, costs about a tenth the price compared to aquarium branded stuff and lets you plant nice and densely to start with.

Depends where the tank is and the average room temperature.

Looking at it, the tank is running at just over 20C with no heater - so I imagine the 25w heater at 26C should be enough to bring it up to temp...

I'll get some pics up once the new tank is all up and running :)

Quick Question, anyone here in the Surrey area able to rehome a xenomystus nigri (African Brown Knifefish) Its about 5 inches long. Currently fed on Frozen foods, but will take flake if offered.

http://www.seriouslyfish.com/profile.php?genus=Xenomystus&species=nigri&id=303

I have two in my tank, and the smaller has been getting beaten up a bit since adding some convicts, the larger is able to hold his own.

If someone has a tank large enough to house it, and is willing to take it on and collect there would be no charge :)

Can any one here point me in the right direction for a "quiet" (Aka pretty much silent and no vibration noises) Filter/pump? I have one now but the vibration noises it creates are annoying as I have it in my bedroom. It's a small 19 liter / 5 Gallon tank and it will hold two goldfish.

Please no. Make it into a small tropical tank. 2 goldfish would need nearer 100 gallons to be happy.

Filter wise, you could get a submerged canister filter, they are pretty silent, and dampened by thew water. Otherwise, look at a closed loop external, they are more expensive, but generally quite quiet, provided the return is low enough in the water.

Moved my fish tank recently, my god it was heavy even with most of the water out.

Damn guppies keep breeding!
