Yea I will be keeping a very close eye on the size of the clowns I may have to pass them on or upgrade to a bigger tank when the time comes :)

For some unknown reason, my water came toxic within a few days. Water smelt really bad and i lost a few smaller fish.. Not had any problems for years. Took a Nitrate and Ammonia reading an they were through the roof. Replaced 50% of the water, then 10% every other day for a week. A week later Ammonia is normal, Nitrate still a little high but balancing out. I've bought some new plants and changed the lighting.. but I'm clueless as to what caused the sudden problem. I'm not touching the filter for a while.

Btw.. I just got a discount code at aquatics-online that i can't use if any one wants a discount.

AQ1510812 15% off runs out on Tuesday. Saves a few pennys :)

Any cleaning products or deodorant ect been sprayed near the tank? My girlfriend decided to polish the outside of my tank with Mr Sheen and 2 days later I had 4 dead fish :(
Or possibly a chemical got onto one of the plants before you added them.

Here are a few pics of mine(they aren't the best quality). It's still a work in progress will probably take me another year to get it exactly how I want it.

No idea. I was a away for a fornight. Thought the kids had put too much in the tank but they swear the feed was right.. May be we had a power cut or something ???

Righto, quick video here. Tank is still refusing to clear fully after redoing everything , but figured I should document the start of the rescape anyway - hopefully when I'm next home at the end of September everything will be crystal clear!

All the carpeting plants are beginning their slow spread, which is very pleasing.

Thanks for all previous advice - now have 2 tanks, plus a spare small one which I keep going as a spare for emergencies.

Got a bit of an issue with my Ruby shark at the moment - he is in a large tank with a Pleco and a Rainbow fish, has been for years (although was a smaller tank before we took them off a family mamber and gave them a tank that suited thier size).

We read the Rainbow fish should be in a group, so we got 3 more, slightly smaller/younger, to make his life a bit better - only problem is the Ruby Shark continually chases the 3 smaller fish and looks to be attacking them, which is unusual for him as he is normally quite docile.

I have moved the Ruby into the spare holding tank, what should I do next to integrate them - dont want to be running 3 tanks, or for the Ruby to be on his own??

Probably not what you want to hear but I would probably see if your LFS or a friend would take the shark. I don't find they make very good community tankmates although there are always exceptions.

Very nice indeed! What lighting are you using? Ferts/Co2/substrate?

I'm finishing off my 260L planted community tank and want to get some pics up but have the Juwel ballast issue so unfortunately no lights, which really doesn't help newly established plants and the dozens more sat in a bucket waiting to be put in :(

Boxman, many thanks for the advice - wife wont let me get rid of the Ruby so looks like I may have to run 3 tanks!!

Are Ruby Sharks ok on thier own in a tank or should I put him back in with the Pleco and origional Rainbow and put the new 3 into the spare until they grow larger?

Ruby sharks, as well as Red Tailed Black sharks don't mix well together so avoid adding any more of the same (some LFS would advise you do this!?!!!)

You should be fine with putting him back with the pl*co and other tank mates but just keep an eye on them for a bit, any sign of trouble then I'd whip him out pronto.

Alternatively, adding more active/boisterous tank mates would be fine such as barbs (tigers can be nippy devils, as well as most tetras, so be careful) or something like zebra danios which are at full size bigger than neons.

Not saying this is the case for you TBird but so many LFS out there just want to sell sell sell irrespective of what sort of fish people currently stock and things like RTBS or even bettas are often what people go for but don't get told of their poor community tank reputations. Good link here. My main LFS always want to check what other tank mates you have and for me personally would never guarantee smaller fish to survive as I have a synodontis angelicus (big mother of a cat fish) but has been fine.

Cheers, the local fish shop is ok, good for advice etc and they picked the biggest Rainbows to add and have helped lots in setting up - wouldnt sell me fish until i bought water in etc etc.

The Pleco, Ruby and origional Rainbow were inherited from a relation and came in a woefully small tank but lived together happily, in just the additions that have sparked off the Ruby.

I am thinking of replacing the Ruby back in the big tank and taking the 3 new Rainbows out until they are a little bigger and more likely to be able to look after themselves. Its strange as the origional rainbow seemed to bully the new ones but settled down after a week, then the Ruby got aggressive and the origional Rainbow seemed to try to help the newbies by getting in the way - fish, like women i'll never understand!

I do have 4 tiger barbs in another tank but they are even smaller and I think they wouldnt last long.

Thought I might "wade" into this thread. So i've just had 1 of my flame tetras keel over and go out in a spiral (literally) and it's about time I replace this god awful baby biorb (I know, they are awful, didn't know anything when I got it etc etc). So with that thing going to way of the dodo, are their any tanks people would recommend?

I've got 2 options as the biorb is on top of a Ikea Expedit 4 x 2 so there is the possibility of putting a new tank on top of that, thinking somewhere in the region of 60-75l?. However, might go a bit larger and get rid of the expedit and go with a stand and tank. The big question is what to get! Budget isn't huge here but I don't want a pile of poo again like the biorb. As i'm used to that as well I have no idea about "proper" filtration systems and whether the current heater I have in there would do for a new tank. Any help is much appreciated!

If Your looking for something easy to maintain have a look at juwel's range of tanks they come with a built in internal filter that does a pretty good job and everything else you need to start again. I personally believe its best in the long run to buy the biggest tank the space can take, but I understand sometimes its not that simple. For smaller side of thing I would take a look at their rekord line.

Just got a Juwel Rio 125 myself and I am very impressed with the quality however they are a little expensive at around £280 for tank & cabinet.

Take a look at your nearest Maidenhead Aquatics as they usually have some good deals with there own brand of tanks which include everything needed to set up.

Had my tank for over a year now (Juwel Rekord 70L), but wondered if anyone could pass on any tips about keeping plants going.

I like to use live plants, but after 1-2 months they usually die, and as they die they rot away and start to block up the top filter. This is fine if I'm around because I clean the filter with my biweekly water changes. However, if I go away for a couple of weeks it can be a problem.

So my question: why are my plants dying? I have a daylight on for ~13 hours a day. I add a small amount of plant food to the tank once a week.

Maybe your water circulation isn't too great. I had that problem with a few plants rotting around the base, something I read suggested adjusting the filter output to increase water movement and all's been well so far.

Thanks guys. Might pop St Alban's brach of Maidenhead Aquatics on Saturday to have a look. How long would you need to cycle the tank (say a 125l), from purchase, about 2 - 4 weeks before transfering the fish?

Aquatic plants need:
good light, about 1-2w per gallon (x2 T5 tubes with reflectors is usually ok) 8-10hr per day is plenty.
Plently of water movement around 10x tank volume per hour.

Co2 preferably via a pressurised system although if dosed correctly liquid carbon can work well.

Proper fertilzation daily.
