Your current Fish tank Setups!

Could someone give me an idea how much it will cost to setup a 8ftx2ftx2 tropical marine tank?

I had a 6ftx2ftxz2ft tropical tank in the past but was thinking of going to a proper marine setup in the new flat.

It will cost you a small fortune im afraid. Probably around £500 for the tank glass, £500 for a strong cabinet, £200 for a decent sized sump, £800 for the live rock, £500 for decent lights (probably more), £600-£1500 for a decent skimmer, £200-400 for powerheads etc, £200 for pipework and connectors, £200-600 for return pump, £200 for a decent RO unit. Then theres the stock, substrate, any other filtration methods you may want, heater, chiller, and other items you may want to consider such as calcium reactors, UV sterilisers, phosphate reactors etc etc etc...

Also consumables and running costs such as salt, filter media, food, additives, DI resin, replacement bulbs/tubes, test kits and the big one electricity.

That is all based on brand new equipment, obviously you can get some stuff second hand. If you join a forum such as ultimate reef, you could have a look at some of the large/supersized tank threads and ask the tank owner for a breakdown of costs. Im just estimating, but id say its pretty close to actual costs.

Edit - I hope its a ground floor flat btw! If not you need to check with a structural engineer as to whether your floor will hold the weight (may want to do this anyway even on a ground floor flat) you might end up having to re-enforce the floor.

Edit 2 - If you can afford it though, definately go for it. You wont regret it :)

Photo of my Trigon 190.

Had the black background fitted but it seemed to affect the Discus colours.

Will need to get better pics.

Nice setup and love Discus :) How comes you don't have any plants/rocks etc in there? Discus are quite timid and like things to hide behind, was the only way I could get mine to breed by making it quite secluded.

Got rid of my overstocked tropical

Where did you get rid of the fish to? Ive had mine running for almost a year now and would like to change the type of fish - maybe go for a cichlid stock. Problem is getting rid of the few tropical fish I have. I dont have any mates with tanks that could take them off my hands.

When I 1st set the tank up I had a bad experience with the water being
mucked up by decaying plants.

Once the plants were removed all the colours came back in the fish so I have
just left them like that.

Mine are not shy at all can be hand fed - I have one that is lying atm but the
eggs are just getting scoffed.

nice discus, though you should allow a minimum of 40 gallons per adult discus & you should keep odd numbers... I count 8

Water Quality is perfect and the fish are happy and given most have been in
the tank for a few years now I must be doing something right.

When they start to get larger and perhaps pair off, odd numbers help to lessen the bullying. Adult discus do require around 40 gallons each so at their current stage they won't be too bothered with a smaller tank; however it may stunt their growth in the long run.

I have a few tanks in the garage (Rio 400 + another 2 smaller ones) and the
tank they are in atm has 2 external Eheims running as well so I will be okay if I
want to seperate them going forward.

Just given mine a fresh bit of decoration. Need more blue gravel though.

Its a 3ft tank and in it I have...

2 Plec (Had these for about 3 years)
1 Golden Gourami
1 Tinfoil Barb
2 Blood Parrot Cichlids (had these for over 4 years now, awesome things)
1 seriously cool Figure 8 Puffer! :D My girlfriend has named it Pandora though :(

Wasn't sure how the puffer would get on with the other fish but I think with it being by far the smallest it is behaving itself rather well :)

Heres my tank anyway, really would like to upgrade but going to wait till I've got my own place for that.

Really got into them again recently.

OH NO!!!!! it's not a case of upgrading when you get the space, you are hugely overstocked. I'm surprised no one else picked up on this.

The person that sold you these fish should be shot.

I didnt have much, so gave them to my lfs.

Sounds like a good plan to me. Sea horses are cool but probably best to be kept by an experienced marine keeper (I think they require more attention than lets say clownfish which are a good starter fish).

Good advice, sea horses take some looking after, they like really clean water and can be a PITA to feed.

If you decide to go for it wordy i may have a few softies you can have frags off that wont sting them.

I just got together my bits for my new aquarium on my desk at work.

Its 8 litres....

Tank - 20x20x20cm cube!

Filter - Tiny Hang on Back Variety:

Light - Arcadia Arc Pod

It will initially house a couple of plants, shrimps, and a snail. If its stable, and water conditions look like they can cope, then I might add a couple of the tiniest rasbora species I can find. Although, I am not sure how the filter will cope with the bio load in such a small volume of water...

Still, should be a fun little project, and end up looking something like this...

anyone any ideas what this is its apeared about 2 days ago.

also any tips on how to clean sand without having to shovel it out etc?

Your over feeding and its a Diatoms type algae. Its harmless and normaly the first type of algae to show up in a new tank, algae eating shrips or algae eating fish will eat it. Use plants to out compete it as for cleaning the sand just give it a stare.
