Your current Fish tank Setups!

a lot :p

prob around £1000

And the rest, our 5x2x1.5 cost us £500 in rock alone then add on an RO unit, protein skimmer, powerheads, lights, salt, a refractometre etc.

For a tank as big as an 8ft you'd probably need a sump as well or water changes will be an absolute nightmare.

Ours was a basic set up and I reckon we probably spent around £1800-£2000 not including fish.

my tank 4ftx2x1.5 was £180 a halogen light was £80, skimmer 2nd hand at £40, ro system was i think about £50, heaters £20 plus couple more bits i cant remember, so thats around £300.

live rock was gonna cost around £300, a sump tank £70 + yet to buy salt, test kits, pipe work, return pump, power heads which would take it around the £1000 mark.

so for 8ft tank another 100-200 for the tank plus £300 for live rock, about £1600 at minimum.

yeah prob closer to 2k then 1k :p

Don't forget about the fishes, you can easily splash a few hundred £ on them and corals cost a fortune too. Its a nice 90 gallon tank. Wish I could afford one.

Maintenance would be a pain for a tank this size.

I gots an orca 450, been going for a few months now still waiting to put fish in it

Got 8kg live rock, 1kg for filtration in the back, 2 cleaner shrimp, 3 blue and 3 red leg hermits as the clean up crew for the moment, I want some true percula clownfish but they are around £100 for a pair, so just percula clownfish might be the way forward at only £30 a pair!

Is having bog wood beneficial? Is so why?

Also, how can I get more CO2 into my tank?

Bog wood is generally decorative, and can sometimes colour the water, so some people dont like it, however for some fish species its good to have it for cover/fiding spaces.

CO2 can be added by kits. I run a yeast based CO2 unit. They are about 15 quid from most aquatics shops, and need filling roughly once a month to keep them running :)

I managed to pick up a nice tropical tank off the Bay of E the other weekend.

4ft tank (holds approx 220litres) and stand. Including the following: Fluval 304 External Filter, 1x internal heater, 2x undergravel heaters, gravel, light hood with 2 tubes (1 for fish, the other for the live plants), several planted live plants, 2x pieces of bogwood, 2x pieces of slate, food, net, airpump, 2x water test kits.....plus the following fish:

3x Corydorus Sterbai
3x Leopard Danios
3x Zebra Danios
2x Black Phantom Tetras
6x Pearl Platties
3x Unknown Orange type Tetras

All for the bargintastic price of £150.00!!! :D

Have since added fish from our other tanks:

2x Dwarf Gouramis
3x Neon Tetras
3x Green Neon Tetras
1x Sailfin Pleccy
2 Gold Gouramis
2x Bolivian Rams
1x Angelfish

I have also just ordered a Fluval 405 external filter to replace the Fluval 304. The 304 will then be used as a backup should I ever need one :)

Pics of tank setup and fish to follow.

With regards to the CO2 kits you can also pic up a basic aerosol CO2 start kit for about a tenner like this one.

How are you getting with the yeast set? I've reccentyl got a D-D complete pressurised set, unfortunatley the solenoid is a dud has had to be returned :(

okay, i thought the bog wood would have some kind of benefit.

Tablets seem like a good idea? Will the CO2 help with the Algae? I've cleaned the tank last night (again) scrubbing the glass.. and have turned down the thermostat to 22oc.

I think I might have seen some discussions that certain types of fish need some tannins in the water to stimulate breeding. In general though, I think they are decorative. (Tannins are a substance that can come out of soaked wood)

Tablets for what?

Hi,

Couple of questions:

We've got a 15L freshwater tank, with a few goldfish in. However, we're finding that the water's going cloudy/green after 3/4 days - how would we stop this happening? We've got a Fluval 1 filter, and have used the basic water treatment stuff. Could this be a problem with the water? I've read a few comments about London water, is there anything more we should be doing?

How often/how much should we be doing water changes?

Thanks :)

Daily, 75% changes might just about cover it... Probably twice a week filter rinse (in old tank water)
Fluval 1 in 15 litre tank with multiple goldfish is amazing they are still alive...
London water is the last thing you have to worry about. lol
Too many fish, of the wrong kind, underfiltered in a tank that is too small.
