my tank is also clearing of algae, i bought a fish that eats it :p

he has cleared the front of my tank in under 4 days he is only around 3cm too. next water change i just need to scrub of around the top were he wont go and the tiny specs he has missed.

not sre of the name of them though.

i got some food which is green pelet type thing for 'sucker-mouth catfish' but he doesnt seem to have touched it.

i thought they ate algae wafers which i expected to be a square of green. is the stuff i got the best stuff for them?
 
all the algae wafers i have seen have been disc shaped and my plecs dont like some brands but will happily munch other brands the picky wee noobs, my gold spot pleco loves courgette/zuchinni :)

oh btw for people having problems with algae how old are the light tubes? as when tubes get older they start to change frequency/spectrum a bit which can encourage algae growth.

Nice one mate. If youre interested in investment let me know. Im always looking to invest in things in which I have a passion for, where a sound business plan is in place :)
 
Just order one of these bad boys, a Juwel Trigon 190 to replace my salt-water nano :D

Gonna drill and sump it, then hopefully down the line build an in hood LED light array for some SPS corals.

Would have preferred something bigger but space is an issue...

Guys got a question.

My better half has an outdoor fibreglass pond. She keeps ghost koi carp, some goldfish a sturgeon and some other bits and pieces in there.

Now it's been fine for months and months, suddenly about a month ago it developed some serious algae/green moss in there, so she went and bought the water treatment, done the treatment...which has had...NO effect. Now the moss/algae/green stuff seems to be stemming from the bottom and growing upwards.

What can she do?

If say you try and scoop it out it just falls to bits in your hands so the only way to get rid of it is a very fine net, I did suggest a pair of her old tights but she slapped me for that :p

I can take pictures next time I'm there, the pond is in pretty much direct sunlight all the time? Does this affect it?

Any suggestions, or if you need to ask any questions feel free.

I cant speak for Koi ponds as I know very little but have been keeping trops and marine for over 10 years. Is algae in ponds not treated in the same way as any other aquarium?

For the aquarium... Algae as a rule needs nutrients such as phosphates from the water column to grow, Treatments tend to remove these nutrients from the water starving the algae of phosphate and therefore eventually killing it out. I would hazard a quess to say that these treatments may take a while and need a few treatments in order to remove enough of the nutrients to have an effect on the plant growth?

Sounds like blanket weed, if the pond is in full sun that will just make it grow even faster!

What treatment did she use?
 
Bit of a fish n00b here!

We got a 21L fish tank which also includes its own filter and also an air stone about 5 weeks ago and from what our local pet shop told us it was ok to have 3 gold fish, 2 schubunken (sorry bad spelling I know) fish and one of those black moor fish. Anyway fast foward to 2 weeks later the water appeared to be very dirty (even started cleaning it every day!) and this was the result of the crap filter had packed up, great. Then the next morning we find one of the schbunken fishes dead :( Anyway I decided to go down to another pet shop which is down the road from where I work, I bumped into one of the members of staff in there asking what sort of filter I should be looking for and then he asked what set up I had and then all I get from him is that apparently my tank is way over-stocked & basically the black moor fish will eat the goldfish within the next few weeks and that I need to get rid of it, also the fish that died had died most likely because of the knackered filter and that it got a disease and this guy basically wouldn't leave me alone until I finally said "ok I will get rid of a couple of fish then" and so he did not recommend me a filter either.

Later on that day I popped into another bigger pet store in town and picked up one of those Elite Stingray filters and also got extra replacement foams & stones too. Bung the new filter in and its been excellent ever since, water had never been this clear ever since we first had the fish and we have had it for 2 weeks now. The fish seem to be much more lively and happy, also their nice shiny bodies look really clean too and we have still got all 5 of the fish!

Im a bit worried and confused about what these 2 different pet shops have already told me, I just want to ask some of you fish guru's on here for some of your advice on this? Am I really over-stocking or am I ok? I always keep the fish fed properly (do not over feed them) and keep the tank as clean as it can.

Edit - each of the 5 fishes are around 1.5 - 2 inches long.

general rule of thumb says 1" of fish per 4 imperial gallons. Anything over this is apparant overstocking.

This is the reason I only have 7 fish in my 260litre aquarium :(

Mind you... judging by that you could then only have 1 fish. I would say with regular water changes to keep water levels good you should be fine. Wouldn't put any more in there though.
