Your favourite gpu, ever? Blast from the past..

The 'upgrades' that I remember :-

1. Voodoo 2 - real graphics!

2. Ge-force - no pass thru. cable needed and so smooth.

3. 5870 - just so much better than the nvidia it replaced (cannot now remember what model it actually replaced !)

4. 470 - it lasted well , was very pleased with myself having fitted a Zalman cooler which made the card work in the way that it should (quiet + speedy ; easily clocking to 480 speeds) and only just now replaced it

I do like my current card but wether it will ever make a favourite/game changing list is unclear.

I can just about remember having a 3dFX Voodoo II.

Hell, you can see my name...I can barely remember what my name is from day to day :D

My old XFX 4870 will always have a place deep in my heart but for me the best I have every had for fun was the Asus GTX460 1gb....Oc'd it from 675 stock to 850 on the core without increasing volts. Increased volts and the thing just took off. Sold it to KiiyZ0o.....wish I'd kept it as backup :(

How can there be any other winner then the 3DFX Voodoo 1?

Going from a regular 2D video card to 3DFX Voodoo 1 can only be described as when the caveman discovered fire for the time. For games that supported the hardware it was like someone had sprinkled fairy magic on the game code and suddenly it was transformed into this amazing visual feast.

No other hardware upgrade has ever come remotely close since that fateful day in 1997.

Fave = 3DFX Voodoo 3 3000 16MB.
Most expensive I have purchased = Elsa Gladiac Geforce 2 Ultra 64mb.

I still have both sitting in the attic somewhere :D

I paid £500 (inflation adjusted probably more closer to £580-600!) for the Elsa back in 2000-2001. How did I get my parents to agree to that I don't know, but I bought it for Black & White. Damn I loved that game!

This makes me feel so old though :(

Favourite would probably be the voodoo 3 2000 pci which was my first proper gpu, my pc before that just had some integrated ati rage chip which was pretty slow, when i installed the voodoo suddenly games ran a ton faster, literally a night and day difference.

Voodoo 5500 and 6000 were also favourites mainly because of the sli tech and the idea of combining gpu's for more power but on a single board.

My biggest graphics upgrade was going from a monochrome Twinhead 486DX33 laptop to a 128K Trident video card and a colour screen. The next biggest upgrade was from the 128K Trident card to a 4mb ATI 3D Charger. The next most noticable upgrade was probably from an nVidia GeForce 9800M GTS to 2x GTX 480 SLI... but honestly, I can't say that was as big a leap as the Trident to the 4mb ATI.

9500PRO Unlocked :D
This...
GF3 Ti200 - benching 3dmark 2001 constantly.. happy days.
I quite liked the The Radeon X850 XT Platinum Edition had that fitted with a nice waterblock. Was the King of the Hill for a while until it got found out by Bioshock as there wasn't any Pixel Shader 3..
Then i had love for the 8800GT that was a hell of card.

But the top card for me was Radeon 4980.

Loved the ATI Radeon 8500. A very powerful card for its time but was a huge victim to ATI's drivers. Later on, a whole year in fact, the brilliance of the 8500 was realised.

9700pro was the one that changed my gaming experience most memorably

It didn't change my experience as you but I did manage to get one for 97 from some bizarre chinese site where I had to pay directly into the guys bank (god knows what I was thinking) and shockingly it actually turned up and omg I was in awe.

I think the voodoo 2 has to be mine in my packard bell with a pentium 233mmx & 64mb ram lol.

I ended up getting the voodoo 3 3000 agp but was disheartened with the lack of anything new (including performance) lol

For a few years, I was used to playing games on the lowest settings. I had no clue on what I was missing. Then, was I was 11 I managed to get a 1gb 8600gt for £40. I literally pooed myself when I was able to play nfs most wanted at the highest settings
