Your graphic card mistakes..

Not sure if getting the Radeon VII on launch day before reviews came out was the best decision for me (first launch day card purchase). A lot noiser than my previous msi 980ti gaming, and EOL within months. The crashes with later drivers and issues with Alyx haven't helped, or the fact the 5700XT came out a lot cheaper. Compounded later by the fact it does a great job at covering the chipset fan vents on my motherboard and blowing hot air into it.

Probably better for people with watercooling and modding in mind. :)

NV FX 5xxx card , forgot the actual model number, was a shocking card!!!!!

Had to be the 5600 ultra. I bought one of those from a computer fair back in 2003 I think it was. There was me thinking 'I got a billy bargain, its an 'ULTRA' graphics card. Errr - NO.
I installed DOOM 3 & even on the lowest settings it was a slide show.

The second was the first Nvidia card I bought with Native HDMI when I was my early days of dabbling with HTPC's (2007/8) a 6600 or 6800GTS IIRC. It made more noise than a Jet fighter, which made watching films (its main function at the time) a complete waste of time. I kept that card for a few weeks tops. its replacement was a 3870, I think it was one which needed an ATi DVI to HDMI adaptor, much better card for said HTPC use. I still have said adaptor lying around in my PC odds & ends box to this day.

Was it the 5800 with the leaf blower cooler? That thing was genuinely funny, pretty much a rushed out response to the 9700/9800 series from ATI.

The 59X0 cards weren't quite as bad.

Not that one, Had a smallish cooler on it.

Hammer, meet nail :D

That's basically what happened to me, It was a horrendous card!!!!!

I couldn't even give the damn thing away.

Lots of folks with FX card regrets, shame they haven't brought back another FX line. It's like the Stigma of it is for ever tainted.

Like if they launch an FX Titan, or FX 3080Ti, I wonder if people will think of the old 5000 Series right off the bat.

ATi Rage Fury Maxx.

It did not play well with all sort of things, like NT kernel operating systems... So could only use it with Windows ME.

FX was also alleged to be signifying it was the first series of cards 3dfx engineers had worked on, or so went the talk at the time. Dunno how much truth there was to that.

Windows ME was also woeful, only saving grace it had was movie maker which was half decent for the time. :)

I was one of the few who didn't really have any issues with Windows ME. Also, MovieMaker is still good. Just a real pain to get hold of for Windows 10 since Microsoft tried to kill if off.

Bought two GeForce FX cards, a 5600 for my main rig and a 5200 for my secondary rig to play crisis over LAN with a mate, it was a slideshow on both machines at anything other than the lowest settings, bloody awful cards yet for a good while OC/UK (whilst still at Imex) proudly displayed a GeForce FX sticker on the glass panel between the counter and offices, I'm sure it was deliberate.... :D

Starting to feel like selling my RTX3090 about 6 months ago was a mistake, as since then I've upgraded the CPU (was bottlenecked before) and also the monitor on my son's PC so his 7950 is starting to show its age, could use a hand-me-down.
Or conversely had I not bought it, then I'd be eligible to buy a RTX3080FE, which is what I really want.

I think the only bad choice I made was my first card.

A Matrox G400, not a terrible card for gaming but the Geforce2 came out shortly after I bought it and was far better.

But this was before I had regular internet access, so deciding on components was much more difficult in those days.

Had an 8800GTX and had been doing something with the PC, maybe putting in another hard drive so the side was off and I went to work. Tried turning the PC on that evening, no video output. Investigated and a familiar pungent smell coming from inside. Bloody cat had peed on the 8800 and killed it.

in 2007 a pc store conned me to believe a pair of SLI GeForce 6600's would be great for gaming. It was not and I had to play call of duty modern warfare at 720p all low settings to get reasonable framerates

Swaping a geforce 2 for a Geforce FX 5200, they had stupidly similar performance, believe the 5200 had a more advanced version of direct X shaders back then but that was pretty much it, ended up upgrading later that same year for a ATI 9800 and it was night and day difference.
